EWU leader ruled ineligible

NCAA declares DeLeon ineligible
Eastern Washington's men's basketball team took a major hit on Wednesday when it was learned that senior point guard Adris DeLeon -- through not fault of his own -- is eligibile to compete this quarter.

Here's the link to the story that ran in Thursday morning's S-R.

You can read more comments and quotes from Eagles coach Kirk Earlywine on the matter. And please feel free to leave your own opinions on the complicated manner in which this all played out.

This would seem to be a major setback to Earlywine and his rebuilding efforts, but the Eagles second-year coach, while upset with both the NCAA and his own university, is approaching it as positively as he can.

"Obviously, Adris was our leading returning scorer and a guy who kind of struck fear into the hearts of Big Sky opponents -- I mean, he 42 in a league game last winter," Earlywine said. "We just have to have Gary Gibson, Milan (Stanojevic) and Trey (Gross), those guys step up. There are more minutes for them now.

"They say in every black cloud there's a silver lining, and in this case its the opportunity those other guys have to play more minutes and be more productive."

In analyzing how DeLeon's eligibility issue played out, Earlywine added, "There's two over-riding things here. I think it's just an absolutely horrendous decision by the NCAA, because him withdrawing from that class did not add to any classes he had to take subsequently, and it didn't change his expected graduation date. It changes nothing. It's just a gawdawful decision by the NCAA.

"And then on top of that, I'm not at all happy that he was advised to withdraw from that class. I'm unhappy with the NCAA, and I'm unhappy with the ball being dropped on our campus."

Earlwine would not say who advised DeLeon to drop the class that red-flagged him with the NCAA. But he said he expects DeLeon to say in school at least long enough "to see what happens with the NCAA Cabinet," or "get himself eligible at the end of the fall quarter.

"He's overcome so many obstacles, and finally has his degree in sight," Earlywine added. "It's just a shame for the NCAA, in essence, just to says it's over.

"They speak so much about the welfare and well being of the student athletes, but in this case, they completely sent the wrong message."
