Eric Hutchison commits to the Griz

I have heard from a couple sources that 6-9 Eric Hutchison committed to the Griz last night. Good pick up

Heard the same thing. If true, another solid recruit for Tinks! :thumb:
 
Based on who is posting this, I am guessing the likelihood is pretty high of him signing. If so, this will be a great get for the GRIZ. As soon as someone heres something official please post it. If what you know is not for a public post, feel free to post me any pertinent information.

Both Scout and Rivals are reporting the commitment. I have talked with (if email exchanging counts as talking) with 3-4 so called recruiting experts and all feel that Eric is a great pick up for a Big Sky school. His stats were rather modest for his junior year at about 9 points and 6 rebounds (I am too lazy to look them up), but he comes from a school who stock piles talent, ie they have been accused of recruiting players. He had a great summer and that is when his recruiting took off, not to mention growing 2 inches. He was definitely a top target, if not the top target for the Griz. Maybe GB1 knows more than I. If he would have waited until spring I am sure he would have been a a very hot commodity. I think the main advantage the Griz had were that they had Washington players who he knew on the team, and Tinkles rep as a big man coach.
 
lotta good news here. if hutchison is indeed the tenth best post man on the west coast, that's really saying something, since that includes one of college basketball's most fertile recruiting areas, california.
it also reaffirms tinks's mojo as a recruiter, especially of big men.

but what pleases me most is that finally, after a period going back to the holst era, we're getting back to high school recruits as the foundation of the program. i'm all for plugging in a good jaycee every now and then, but i never thought the montana program would get back to continued long-term excellence until we got back to putting high school kids first. with successive classes now that include ward, stockton, digs and hutch--and two more scholarships to offer--we're building a rock-solid base for the future.

May, 2008: Hutchinson -- think Cal big man Taylor Harrison -- was one of the pleasant surprises at the event (2008 Rumble in the Bay). He has all the intangibles to be a solid 4 or 5 at the mid-major level and may go higher depending on his development. He has a nice looking lanky frame that possesses the room to put on weight without losing any of his versatility. He has great hands, quick feet and can finish in transition. Although he has a slight frame, he battles hard at both ends and is one of the better passing big men in the West Coast's Class of 2009. He rebounds well, does an exceptional job of filling the lane and can finish with an acrobatic layup. His strength in the half-court set is coming off of screens and attacking the basket or catching in from the post, facing-up and utilizing his quickness to get by his opponent. Hutchinson can add to his game by utilizing the jump-stop and developing a midrange jump shot, but overall he is one of the top 10 post prospects on the West Coast.

Eric Hutchison had a goal of signing early in November and that will definitely happen. A third and final visit to Utah State was supposed to take place this past weekend for the svelte 6-foot-9, 220-pound post from Mark Morris High School in Longview, but some late developments led to its cancellation. That helped Hutchison reflect on his recruitment, and in essence led to him making the call on his future.

"I committed to Montana last night," Hutchison said on Monday morning. "I know a lot of people there like Michael Taylor and Mathias Ward, and I feel comfortable with the staff. I had an awesome visit there and I definitely like the environment. They have big crowds there like they did for their football games and they're excited about their sports there."

Hutchison visited Montana from September 12-14 and ever since had time to think back on that weekend. In the end, he felt most at home with the Grizzlies and what they had to offer and you can also credit the relationship he was able to build with head coach Wayne Tinkle.

"I've talked to him the past three years which is a really long time," Hutchison said. "So it's nice to be able to commit to someone I know. He's played in Europe so he'll be able to help me get there too."

With his decision in the books, Hutchison is set on having a big senior campaign while preparing himself for D-I basketball at the same time. "We want to win state and individually I'll need to carry our team," Hutchison said. "I also need to get a little heavier. I put on some weight during the summer but I need to try and keep it on."

I would say 2/3 of all college big men would like to play some form of pro ball after college. Former Griz Strait and former Bobcat Morris are playing pro ball over seas. I would bet Hasquet, Qvale, Mbunga are will definately get the chance if they want too, and Selvig, Sharp, and Howard have a really good shot at it.
 
I am glad this commit is official. I think our program and him are great fits for eachother. With an 85 ranking, he has possible NBA potential, and most definitely overseas proball. It sounds to me like his comment was that of being realistic, which is refreshing to me. Honestly to God, if I had to choose working 40 plus hours a week and be lucky to make 30k/year and never see the world, OR get paid more to see the world, I too would choose professional ball if the NBA did not come into play!

For any college baskeball player, the NBA is icing on the cake. Tinkle can obviously coach 3's to 5's and get them to the point of banking some money when their college days are over. What more can a college player of any caliber ask for?

As for the GRIZ, it sounds like this guy is very athletic for a big, that will be a nice change for us fans too!

Technically it is not official because it is only a verbal commitment. Early signing period I believe is Nov 4.
