Engstrom stepping down

Goodbye and good riddance to Engstrom. That incompetent jerk left UM in a hole that it will take years to dig out of! He should never have been made President.

Jim O'Day should apply for the job! He got hosed as AD. Already has a very good handle on UM and is very well liked. He understands the importance of athletics to a university and visa versa.

For those basking on the piling on moment, the glee will soon be replaced by the reality of replacing a president mid stream.
When do you do this? After the stream is dried up?
Indeed the challenges faced by Royce soon engulfed him re the resources available to him, (scant financials, downward trend in non stem institutions, student retention, etc...)
Engstrom inherited a campus with long-term, healthy enrollment trends, new construction in place to enhance recruiting efforts in the future, an excellent reputation, the unqualified position as the Flagship institution in Montana, record research budgets, and the most successful capital campaign in history.

Then, Engstrom began making a series of bizarre decisions designed, apparently, to show who was "in charge" and a'la Richard Brodhead at Duke, to show his true "PC" credentials to the world.

Since then, nearly all the advantages he inherited are gone. There is no blame to go elsewhere.

As the Missoulian correctly notes today:
The main campus has roughly 2,200 fewer students than it did five years ago, a 17 percent drop that ranks among the worst enrollment declines among public universities in the country.

 Engstrom has been a disaster for UM!

I am willing to give three wide receivers and a player to be named later to the Bobs for Waded.

It seems like when someone (not so very well liked) gets sacked, dies or moves on its common for critics to lighten their stance and say nice things about the individual.

Not me. Don't let the door hit ya where my dog shoulda bit ya and good riddance!!!!

I was taught as a child to be polite when someone dies, looses a job, etc. I cheered when I heard Scalia was dead and I gotta admit I cheered when I heard this news.

I cheered when I heard about the "Biden Rule"; Know what that is?

Sheila is a great hire as an interim. I've known her for 30 years and she loves and cares about UM. She is also a big Griz fan. I went to grad school with her in the early eighties. Great person and educator.

I had occasion to visit with her Dad, Hal Stearns, many times. Fascinating guy and great family.

Pssssssst. That's her husband.

Thank you, wbtfg.

Honestly, if you think this decision is for something other than Engstrom telling th board he won't be a part of laying off faculty, you're a dumb Trump supporter. This has nothing to do with Griz Football/sports.

More degrees that lead to decent jobs is what is needed. UM has always ignored this but the new economy of this country demands it. The president understands this or he will fail. Medical field, business maybe some engineering. The liberal arts days ended when the cost of the education passed the ability to earn.

Disagree to some extent - there will always be a need for liberal arts related fields and the UM should stick to being the primary source for those.

The UM should not try to go head to head (engineering for example) with MSU because that's a wasted effort, IMO. Butte and Bozeman do it better, find different avenues don't just try to duplicate.

Build up an expand successful programs on campus that are also growing and in big national need. Biology, Sciences, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Business, Law, Forestry, and so on.

However yes, medical, computer technology, & other widely untapped fields they could go after - they should take a run at.
UM does have a Computer Science program, and some business school programs focusing on big data.

Sheila Stearns is a good interim choice - and she's Griz friendly. Back in 1986 when she headed up the alumni association and we were setting up the initial UM-MSU satellite TV party she helped make it possible on short notice with a mailing to area alums and serious door prize merchandise. Don't be surprised if the oft promised "national search" once again winds up going by default to a homeboy - or in this case, a homegirl. She has a pretty solid resume in higher ed.

No question Sheila could do the job well, but at around 70 and having retired twice already, doubt she is interested in the permanent position.

MSU's Wadded appreciated a guy who helped her look good...
Don't misunderestimate Royce Engstrom. He did more for Montana State University than any president there since Roland Rennie.

MSU has a bit of an advantage in recruiting in part due to their proximity to Big Sky and other big name recreation opportunities. Face it Bozeman is more of a "galm" town than Missoula.
A friends oldest son just graduated in engineering. It to him seven years, 4 on campus and 3athe Yellowstone Club.
I think the University could develop a Collage of Medical Sciences to include the existing programs and expand into new area such Nursing, PA, Dental Tech, etc. Possibly even offering Doctor of Optometry.
That said, recruiting needs to be ampd up. I now of one Skyview Junior that has a 4.0 gpa and has been prospected and accepted to three area colleges but has not received anything from the University of Montana.

I don't know about expanding nursing. MSU has a nursing program and there are limited opportunities for nursing students to do their 3rd and 4th year. They have to go to hospitals to do these and there are not infinite spots for them to do this. So if you have MSU and UM both having large nursing programs, you risk making a huge logjam.

As far as dental tech, this is usually a 2 year degree.

What about aviation? Rocky has offered a degree for a while. MSU now has one too. But the opportunity to get some internships with the USFS fighting fires might be a great opportunity for UM to use as an advantage. Tons of private jets flying in and out of Bozeman. I'm sure Missoula does too.
