Engstrom Reputation

At first quick glance I thought the topic read "Engstrom Resignation"...I was immediately brought back to earth upon reading it again.

This is not about football. This is an institutional crisis at an esteemed university.

The issues that will catch the Regents' attention are declining enrollment AND DECLINING CONTRIBUTIONS. I for one will not continue my planned contributions to the University until there is a change in leadership at the top.

The University of Montana deserves better!

The appointment of Pat Williams to the Board of Regents (by Mr. Bobcat Brian Schweitzer) must be approved by the Republican controlled State Senate in the upcoming Session. Things are going to get very interested, methinks.

Bingo!... Royce Engstrom, as bad as he is, is just a symptom of continuing failed leadership at the state level where the status quo has always been good enough. Nothing positive will happen as long as those who profess caring about Montana and its higher educational system remain in denial and start publically demanding better. As a UM alum who contributes financially let me say it: the University of Montana, except for pockets of exceptionalism, compared nationally to peer institutions is indeed a third tier university.

I'm no Engstrom apologist, but ironically, I think all the negativity about Engstrom reflects poorly on UM, and that in turn reflects badly on UM athletics. Engstrom is not going anywhere. I think it's time to move on and try to find some positive things to say about the university, in spite of Engstrom.

I respectfully disagree...don't move on...increase the noise! This is a profound issue that needs MORE voice and attention so those with the power to make change recognize the depth of this problem.

To give up means the status quo is acceptable. This is not about UM athletics. The athletics decisons occured because of a much bigger lack of leadership issue that will plague the institution if no change is made.

The University of Montana deserves better!

I respect your trying to stay positive AWF, but Engstrom is still going to be in place at the top of the heap. Cancer does not cure itself - it spreads. I believe this is just the start of many future missteps. How long does the BOR let this go. How far does the U of M have to fall before they recognize there is a problem. You can stick your head in the sand, the problem is still there. Sports programs are one thing - enrollment and decreasing contributions are even bigger problems.

Copper....you are right, but so is AllWeather....I don't think the BOR will do anything about this jerk, Engstrom. I'm afraid he is going to be around a few more years.

A few letters to the editor such as the Msln would assit in Engstrom's departure. The pro golf course group is not enough but the noise they are making is helping put some blame on ol Roycee. We need and I think we will get more "hate" mail concerning the pres.
The decline of students attending UM will have more clout than pure football fever as most of us are into big time. It may take some work but old Roycee should begin to feel the heat soon. He does want to move East to be with his kids.
In the end he has shown to be a miserable leader and is quite full of himself!

Douchebag Engstrom,

You have singlehandedly reduced the most intimidating team in the FCS to a losing team.
And you have decreased the intimidation of WAGRIZ. You are NOT a GRIZ and you need to get yourself the hell outta here! I am alumni and I do have a voice and a checkbook.

Athletics matter. Consider our neighbor to the west, Gonzaga. In 1992 when they made their first NCAA appearance, they had 4200 students, today after 14 more NCAA trips they have 7800 students, a new athletic center several new dorms and buildings, all with private funding. The BB team has one of the highest graduation rates in the top 25. Sports do matter.
I agree with letters to the board and gov. It would be helpful if some one would post some addresses.

I saw that UM made US News & World Report's Top 15 list of Most Underperforming Universities for 2012.
only the tip of the iceberg, currently significant cuts to ALL departments (just ask anyone who works there about their dept.) drop in enrollment reduces income and it spirals down even further....things not good over there, weak leadership and low state support means low morale.

Exactly F11, exactly. Unfortunately this is something corporations and institutions simply neglect to take note of these days - morale. Poor morale equates to poor performance. Sports exemplifies this.

It usually isn't the corporation (C level execs) that doesn't care, it is poor management and their inability to actually engage the employees properly.

Voice concerns to the regents via this link:

http://mus.edu/board/BORmembers.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Please email them! Many points and concerns are laid out very nicely in this thread, and worded very well, but i don't think the regents spend much time on Egriz.
