I believe this whole situation could have been undertaken in a manner to let all the folks involved walk with their dignity and self respect, and yet get the message across( not sure what the message is, as there has been no clear explanation and probably won't be) Assuming Engstrom had good reason for replacing both O'day and Pflugrad, he could have called them together, gave them the bottom line, and than asked them to work with him to make the best for all interests..I'm quite sure both men would have agreed to resign, with the explanation that episodes had occurred that weren't preventable by them, but since it happened on their watch, they felt honor bound to take action to let everyone know it wasn't something they condoned. Engstrom could have said he had serious discussions with the two of them, and they all agreed U of M didn't need more consternation, and this solution would give all a fresh start... That would have been my solution, and it might not have worked, but something of this nature should have been attempted..
