Engstrom and Beers - Some Details

"Bob Beers looks like a prophet now when he told Engstrom, to his face in March 2012, "It's going to take 10 yrs to get Montana back to where it was, because of the decision you made today (firing JO & RP). Engstrom had called Beers to his office a few hrs after JO and RP were fired, to ask him to be interim head coach. Beers told him that, AND he said, "You just fired (RP), the main reason I came back to coach at Montana (my Alma Mater). Your going to be next, Engstrom.
There's going to be a posse coming after you, after what you just did."

As told to me by a good friend, who was in the room part of that day. I heard previously, and it was on egriz, that the dad of a Missoula linebacker found Engstrom while he was addressing someone, maybe the team, and confronted him too.

Engstrom not only took down the team, he took down the university, in my view. The team is recovering. Will the school ever recover?

I see no reason why the school shouldn’t recover. If it hasnt already.

I’m also not sure how the team is still in recovery. I consider this to be extremely unfortunate, but still old business.

You are not aware of the enrollment decline that started under Engstrom? While the decline was stopped under Bodnar, it hasn't gone up to be even close to what it is. UM is still sucking wind.

I heard a rumor (no idea if it's true or not) that UM is expecting an overall enrollment increase of 1,000-1,500 students this year. That seems like a pretty sizeable jump so take that with a grain of salt, but if that's true then that's great news for UM!

"Stopped under Bodnar" is probably too generous. I'd say reached its angle of repose, though I think the decisions have been better lately.
Beers would have been the perfect coach for the moment. No one turns a group of athletes into a highly functioning football team a few short months like Beers does. He really carved out a niche in NFL Europe.

Enrollment stopped declining under Bodnar and then started to rise, at least at the frosh level. See other post above too.

Yes. That had to be difficult, given his connections to the program…knowing it was going to shit the bed from Engstrom’s actions.
