Embarrassment to the Rivalry

You're precious.

Hey remind me, who's the Griz coach who famously flipped off MSU fans? Must be a classy guy, and definitely not a jerk. ;)
True. He was reprimanded and in a public way had to address this and other accountability concerns when he was rehired.

Coaches can't directly control fans, they can only encourage them to show good sportsmanship.

Coaches do control their players and can have a talk with them before a game letting them know vulgar, disgusting behavior will result in running steps, stairs, loss of playing time and $ fines of their NIL money 💰 for violating their NIL code of conduct. !!!

Either Coach Vigen didn't have that talk with his team or they didn't listen. If I were him, I would use all of the above approach: loss of playing time, stairs, laps, $ NIL fines, and the guilty players would be making an " apology video" apologizing to The University of Montana, it's students and fans, and I would also let the guilty parties know that any repeats will lead to expulsion off my team !!!

And if I were MSU's new president, I would have a heart-to-heart with my AD Leon Costello and tell him if I see any such behavior in the future, he is to monetarily fine the coaches of the football team and a letter of reprimand will also be placed in their files.

I was blessed to know Dr. Mike Malone, MSU's late president and eminent Montana historian. Mike would have been absolutely livid if he had seen any of MSU's players displaying such rude, boorish and vulgar behavior, there would have been hell to pay, and s___t would have started flowing downhill rapidly from the president's office starting with his AD to abolish such behavior ASAP. !!!
You know what bugs the shit out of me, is entitled fans of teams that think just because the buy a ticket to a game think they can say anything or flip the middle finger to a player and start crying when a player comes back at them in a similar fashion..

Where I come from if that's all the player did in retaliation you should consider your self lucky.. some fans act all brave and tough from a distance with the protection of a crowd or security of some kind but in reality would probably shit themselves if it came down to one on one confrontation with said individual...

But fans in the stands are not necessarily direct representatives of the school and may not have even attended the school themselves. As a coach and official for almost 50 years, dealing with NIL now puts more responsibility on players as the are now more like employees of the school. Coaches are responsible for class behavior before, during and after the game. Statement you made "where I come from" is exact words of many justice involved people I counsel now. Not a statement for success.

Nothing like a little rivalry loss to turn some Griz fans into certified Karens… give me a break. College dudes beating their chest at rival fans after a huge win- color me shocked.

We want to act like our fans and players are somehow above juvenile rivalry antics, but fact is both sides are the same and have a small minority that do stupid shit.
Justifying the behavior encourages it. I’d expect
You’d know that. Either side.

There is an old saying.."you have to give respect to get respect"..don't you agree?

I know you know what flipping the middle finger represents.. to me if the players in question didn't get physical or do anymore that what was thrown their way its all fair..

I can 1000% guarantee you as much as the bobcats were celebrating their victory yesterday they were laughing their butts off at the behavior of SOME of the griz fans.

The justification is strong in this one.

NIL money making players more employee like has changed my view on this no matter the school. It is coaching responsibility. Young men in general in society get into trouble more often than any other segment. I counsel reentry of many who state they always got away with things. We should be less accepting not more

What I saw, all day, would have embarrassed me to be a scat fan, but the actual boz-manite does not agree.

I thought there was a point of emphasis to stop taunting in football but it seemed at the end of every play, a scat was in the ear hole of a Griz player.

When it was on their sideline, they surrounded the Griz player and tried to start a mess.

I saw Lamson in particular on the Montana sideline running his mouth to the bench and on another play, he tried to flop like he got hit out of bounds and when a Montana player kept him from falling, he hit that player and tried to claim a foul.

The officiating crew only saw fit to do anything about this after Monte Gillman had his helmet ripped off.

I understand it is a rivalry game and they want to let some of this this go, but it was excessive and I am proud to be a Griz because OUR TEAM isn't coached to be punks.

Fans are not necessarily direct representatives of the school. Players are. Flipping middle finger is not acceptable for an "emplyee" representing an organization. NiL does make them employees. Again it is not on the players but on the coaching staff. I was with an MSU official who witnessed this with me and is going to address it. We all need to accept less of this behavior from our great young men not ignor or expect it.

I am not addressing this just for this game. I have addressed this directly with U of M, EWU, Weber State, Sac State any school I see the behavior.

So explaining it, is justifying it?

Where do you draw the line?

Are you o.k. with anybody at any sporting event berating anybody they feel like they want.like coaches, refs, for example.

Just because you buy a ticket to attend an event doesn't give you an automatic pass to be a comple ass.

It really shouldn't be that hard to be a respectful person.

True. But tit for tat is not good regardless. I did intervene in the stands during the game and after in a positive way to keep fights from erupting. Now have new friends that have texted me this morning from both sides. Be part of solution not an ignoring part of the problem.

Are you excusing the fans for their behavior just because their not directly associated with the school?.
Seems like you are.. what do you think the chances that the MSU players in question would have done what they did if the fans wouldn't have did what they did?

Cowboy read above. I do not accept bad behavior. I addressed it directly in the stands. Players are, whether you like it or not, held to higher standards. What did you do to calm things yesterday? I did address it not accept or defend it

I've been part of countless Brawl losses and was at every single loss during the streak. This is exactly how we talked in the losses. It's loser talk. Anyone who thinks this shit doesn't go both ways is either blind, naive, or being willfully obtuse.

I respect that you tried to step in and tried to deescalate the situation.. thank you for at least trying.... I agree 1000% wih your last sentence..again thank you!!!

I don’t know why the players made a concentrated effort to engage the NE post game in the first place. These players should be pulled aside and reprimanded. That is unacceptable by any player from any team. To think otherwise shows a mentality problem and an unacceptable culture by what might be considered thugs. When we come to bozeman in a few weeks if we win I would expect the players to not engage the crowd in a vulgar manner. And not have a few separate and engage..terrible sportsmanship by the players.

I agree but I do address it directly and have new friends and behavior should not be ignored or blindly accepted.
