Embarrassing, Maybe, but Lady Griz still had a good season

Kind of feel sorry for Holly. She hasn't been the most consistent shooter, never know what kind of game she will have. Today, she shot poorly. She did play well on defense, except this one time when she was still thinking too much about her last shot.

Holly's bad shooting pretty much allowed Vanderbilt to spread their defense out, and with quicker players, that spelled trouble with the Lady Griz.

Vanderbilt filled any passing lanes that the Lady Griz had, was able to pressure them at the point of attack and not let Lady Griz do anything.

But, Holly, you will be missed, and still one of the best players to play for the Lady Griz. Don't let one bad game get you down. I certainly enjoyed watching her that past 4 years.

Lady Griz are a better team then they played today, but played lousy. Vanderbilt is an excellent team that played very well today. They did start with jitters. Unfortunately, Lady Griz couldn't take advantage of it, having their own jitters.

In addition, Vanderbilt, a 5th seed, is far better than the 4th seed, Kansas State. I see Vanderbilt continuing on to the quarters, beating Kansas State on monday.

Any, Congrats Lady Griz for an exciting year.

Thanks Lady Griz for the season, it was another fun ride.

I hate endings like this for players like Holly, Crystal, and Lynsy, but True you are rught, it was a great season. Also I'm glad Holly had a great final home game.

Vandy is a fast and talented team, I wouldn't be surprised to see them get to the sweet 16. They did exploit our weaknesses early, and often. Congrats to a better team.

Kansas State is missing their senior point guard, who is also their 3rd leading scorer. She went down in the Big-12 Championship game. I agree KSU looks very vulnerable considering this. They would have been a much better opponant, but ce la vie.

There's one more senior too, Juliann Keller. The terrible part is that they were all sitting on the bench for the last 10 minutes almost, and were forced to soak it all in. I can't imagine how excrutiatingly long that seemed like.

It really is unfortunate for all four of those girls to end their careers like that, but this game shouldn't keep them from hanging their heads high. They won 27 out of 28 BSC games their last two years, compiled a 49-13 record, won two regular and tournament conference championships, and will most likely finish in the RPI top 50 for a second season in a row.

They earned the privilege of playing the NCAA tournament twice. I'll bet Kati Burrows would turn in all her individual awards to say she played in just one.

Montana needed to play a good game, and also at the same time needed Vanderbilt to play a little off. Neither happened for the Lady Griz this time. VU played a strong game, getting contributions from where they needed them. They're stars stepped up and they played the way that they were capable of. If only Montana could say the same thing. UM had the opportunity early to pounce on the Commodores, but let it slip away. Even at the start of the 2nd half, down 9, the Lady Griz could have made a run, but didn't manage a basket for at least 6 minutes. Vanderbilt extended their lead to 42-22 off of an 11-0 run to seal the deal. Hats off to VU, they stepped up and played well.

But man, how I'd love to see the Lady Griz get another shot at this team. Shoot.

Great job girls. There were a lot of people who didn't give this team respect because of the departure of Lorenzen and Deming. I think they proved that it takes more than 2 players to make a good team. It's safe to say that Robin was even suprised at their success. How can you not be proud of a team that played such great team ball?

They need not be worried about coming back to Missoula embarrassed. They established a fan base that ranks in the top 20 of the nation. Those 4,000-5,000 people enjoyed the season. They'll be talking about a lot more good things that happened during the season before this tournament game comes up. Congrats on an outstanding season!

I was at a viewing party and I've hadn't heard that much moaning since I saw Debbie does Dallas.

It reminded me of watching a junior high girls game where they just throw up prayers and all I heard all night was clunk.

Good season but a very tough way to end and very tough to watch.

The announcers were good and tried to ease the pain with the good profiles and Montana stories.

At the end I was just hoping they'd get over 40 points.

How come Holly doesn't act like shack and use her size to back in for the easier shots?

MontanaGymRat, isn't it a shame the men's program couldn't equal the attendance at games, compared to the women? There seemed to be pleadings all season long for paying attendees at men's games. Until Montana improves their caliber of play and the caliber of opponents for both the men's & womens teams, nothing will improve!

We will continue to see 16th seedings and 1st game losses until we see a change in Athletic Department outloooks!

I don't know. I thought the men put out a pretty good product this year. They really came on at the end of the year, but the attendance didn't change. I think it partially has to do with the booster system. They shouldn't be including tickets with certain booster levels if the people donating aren't going to watch the games. They also need to move the student section to the sideline. As soon as that happens, students start to come back because they can actually have a decent view and get excited about the games. This has been pretty obvious to quite a few members of the board and I'm really curious as to why it hasn't donned on the athletic department yet.

I think there's a good number of boosters out there that go for the football games and the Lady Griz games. It's too much money/time/etc to do the men's bball games as well. They also feel like they support one women's sport and one men's sport, so its fair.

It's not that Montana doesn't want to improve, I think its more of figuring out how to improve. It's not an easy thing to bring competitive college sports to a sparsely populate area. You need money, people, etc. before a strong program can happen. But then it takes a lot of success in competition before you get the people and money, so its a circular circumstance.

As for Hollie....I don't know what happened. Intimidation I guess? Bronco, you're right. She should play like Shaq. Using her balance and force to get point blank shots. Hopefully she continues playing somewhere and she learns that aggressiveness. She already is one of the best players to come through Missoula, and she's got some big time potential.

Its probably going to take a little time to get that bad taste out of the mouth, but these girls will bounce back and end up being as proud of themselves as the community already is.

I went to the game Saturday night, and was excited watching K-State and BG, because I thought if Montana could beat Vandy they would be very competitive with those 2 teams. Unfortunately it wasn't close with Vandy.

Vandy was so much quicker and athletic than Montana that the lady's only chance was to have Tyler dominate inside, but instead she had one of her worst games. Maybe it was nerves, maybe she wasn't feeling well, maybe one of those nights. It doesn't really matter at this point. Still a great season, though.

The band didn't help Montana though by Chanting "Over-rated" at the beginning of the game before either team had even scored. I think that might have had something to do with Vandy still shooting 3's and employing a full court press when leading by 20+ points with 2 minutes left. Personally I think Vandy's coach could have had a little more class and ran the clock out, but whatever, what comes around goes around.

The crowd was pretty fun. Too bad Montana couldn't have had both the dance team and the cheerleaders there, but at least the band was there and having fun, and Monte showed up.

Great season for the ladies but I wish it did not end like that. The ESPN announcers kept referring to the level of play last year against LA Tech. One of them then said that it was a home court advantage and that Montana just doesn't have the guns to hang with the top level teams, OUCH! Although pretty appropriate for the way they played, they looked bad.

GrizBeer,
I forgot about that overrated chant. I did hear that but didn't know who was saying it.
I hate that chant.
Isn't that usually done after you've beaten a higher ranked team?
Dumb.

The Lady Griz didn't have the guns Saturday. Julie Deming was the biggist loss for the Lady Griz. Her quickness offset much of the La Tech speed and quickness last year. Her quickness to the basket sure would have helped against Vanderbilt. But nobody, outside of Laura Cote, had the quickness to get to the basket.

Next year, the Lady Griz will be have a smaller quicker lineup.

As mentioned, Laura Cote will be getting much more time on the court, and maybe the quickest player that played this year. She has improved quite a bit. Against Wyoming, she had so little confidence in herself that she seemed to be crying after a couple of turnovers. She is a very intense player and early on, she let some of the mistakes bother her to much. I remember one time she missed a freethrow, and I though she was going to punch out a player near her. But, now, she has more confidence and doesn't really show the frustration she had before after things don't go right. She will be a good player.

I know Montana Gym Rat put Mandy Morales at the 1 position, but don't be surprised to Cote at the 1 position. Mandy could be at the 2 or 3 position in a very small but quick lineup. Mandy will be getting a lot of minutes next year, so will Cote, Conway, and Clossen. Naturally, Jody Mcleod and Katie Edwards will be the leaders of the team.

Without Baird and Tyler, Lady Griz will likely go with a very small lineup next year. Selvig said some of the players will likely be playing different positions. Katie Edwards could be one that plays a different position. In a small lineup, she may move over to small forward. Selvig did mention that the Lady Griz may be more of a fast break type of team, not the slow and methodical play they had this year.

Will find out next year.

I agree with everyone who said that it was a grand year for Lady Griz basketball... let's get that settled right now. And there's no way to deny that the last game was not a great effort by the Ladies. My focus is on the Coach's behavior. Now, I know the restrictions on what a coach can do are enhanced during NCAA playoffs, but did anyone else notice that Rob didn't seem to give a rat's a-- at any point during that game?
