Didn't see this posted... Jeff Edwards committed to the Cats.

From today's Montana Standard in Butte:

Edwards commits to ’Cats

By Bill Foley of The Montana Standard - 10/20/2006

Jeff Edwards will have one less thing on his mind this coming basketball season when he looks to guide Butte High to the state title.
Winning games for the Bulldogs will be all that matters.

Wednesday the 6-foot-10, 225-pound Edwards announced his decision to commit to playing hoops at Montana State University for coach Brad Huse.

The Butte High senior will sign on the dotted line Nov. 8, the first day he’s allowed.

Since he became a starter for the Bulldogs as a sophomore, Edwards has had college coaches and scouts at nearly every game.

“I don’t have to worry about who’s there, or how many points I got to score,” Edwards said. “I know where I’ve got to go and the pressure is off.” Edwards averaged 11.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game for the Bulldogs as a junior. His 88 regular-season blocks were more than double the No. 2 blocker in the state — Missoula Sentinel All-Stater Andy Garland, who blocked 41.

Counting the state tournament, Edwards ended the season with 99 blocks. He’s racked up 204 swats in two seasons as a starter.

Edwards said coach Huse, who recruited the Butte post since he was a freshman and Huse was an assistant coach at the University of Montana, made it clear that Edwards must work to improve on offense.

I thought he would be a Griz.

Good luck to him. I am not sure if the Griz offerred him or not. Mslacat probably knows. Regardless, hope he does well except a couple times a year.

The Griz stopped recruiting Edward (along with a whole list of other big guy's) when they signed Selvig and Qvale. Now they are looking at guards/wings

i like big kids who can block shots. it indicates they have timing and coordination, and can be taught/coached other aspects of the game. (i feel the same way about linemen who wrestled in high school.)

edwards is a good get for the cats. huse caught a break that we quit recruiting him.

the x factor for us is qvale, the kid from north dakota. is he better than edwards? or was he part of the selvig package. time will tell. time always shows us what we couldn't see at the time.

you are right about that City. The Griz have had a lot of kids, especially from MT, who a lot of fans thought should not have been recruited, who turned into all conference players.

Bozeman can have Edwards, because the Griz are gonna get the two best players on the Bulldogs roster, Gilder and Conway!

WOW! I did not know the Griz got a commitment from these guy's. Pretty impressive! I was looking forward to watching the Cat / Griz recruiting battle. The Griz have gotten the best out of Butte lately in football, but Huse has the connections. Butte high coach John Thatcher and Huse have been good friends for around 15 years, as a matter of fact, the Bobcat coaches Huse and Binford had a big coaches conference in Bozeman this week-end and Thatcher was a key speaker at the conference. Hell, though, the Griz got Gilder and Conway to commit already!!! We Bobcats have not a chance.

BTW Did you know that Edwards is the cousin of ex-Griz basketball center Bob Olsen?

What did Thatcher talk about?

I do not know, I am not a coach so could not go.

“A Day With The Bobcats,” will begin at 8:30 a.m., with registration, followed by the Bobcat women’s practice and men’s practice. Ross Cook, former head coach at Oregon State, will speak on personal effectiveness training, followed by John Thatcher, head coach at Butte High School.

A coach’s social concludes the clinic at 3:45 p.m.

Congrats to Edwards and the Cats. Edwards should be a very good defender and rebounder. I hope he works on his offense the way Huse wants. As for other Montana recruits over the next few years, I want to say something before anyone goes blaming Tinks or Griz program if we lose a few more recruits to the Cats or other regional schools.
Right now the GRIZ roster is loaded for the next 3 to 4 years in part to possibly to the best recruiting ever the last few years by the GRIZ. Fact is right now and the next few years Huse and other regional programs can sell playing time more immediately over the GRIZ. Sorry to say, but that is important to many recruits. As someone that knows Huse and a basketball fan, Huse is a great hire. He will be using every angle he can on the recruits both schools are figthing for.
Knowing this, everyone please keep this in mind over the next few years when the Griz do lose out on a few recruits regionally. So please no posts about how Tinks cannot recruit. He is the reason a few of our key players are staying and instrumental through next years recruits. There are alot less basketball scholarships to give out, and to be honest the GRIZ cupboard is full the next few years. Any future recruits will have to be willing to wait for PT or be the caliber of Selvig. If not, chances are we lose them to the CATS and other regional schools.

So mslacat if we use your logic since Thatcher is at Huse's clinic that means they are tight how can you explain Bob Howard (MSU recruit Bobby Howard's dad) was at the Grizzly clinic I saw him with the other coaches at the Grizzley team practice does that necessarily mean Bobby has changed his mind and is going to the Griz now???? (just kidding   )

Back to the topic I am just glad to see another Montana kid choosing to stay in state. I think that says a lot about our two D-1 programs. As for Gilder and Conway, Gilder might be a better baseball player than basketball player let's see how he comes back from last year's injury. As for Conway he is junior but not anywhere near the caliber player both Selvig and Howard were as juniors. I have watched both the Butte and the Great Falls teams play a lot since my kids played against them in travel teams since the 6th grade. Butte is good but like Mslacat has pointed out it is not always the team with the best record that wins state it is the team that can put together 3 consecutive wins Howard, Tatarka and McKittrick have been playing for Bob Howard since 6th grade and if what I saw those boys and there supposed (weak)supporting cast do to teams this summer in Helena is any indication they have a legitimate chance to repeat. You cannot coach 6'8" and the big kid from GFH looks much stronger and improved. I'm sure when the Bulldogs travel to GFH the second week of December it will be a great game. JMO

Got to admit it is one of the few coaching changes over the years at division one that didn't lose players due to a coaching change.

Gilder and Conway are both huge Griz fans, no they haven't committed but I would be very surprised to see them go anywhere else. Tinkle is very impressed with Conway and at the state tourney last year in Butte he stated that Conway was the best sophmore in the state bar none.

mslacat of course I know Edwards is Bobby Olsons cousin.
