Well Egrizzers, I have some early summer basketball information for you all. I watched the GRIZ scrimmage, and plan to a few more times soon. Here are a few observations.
Hasquet- took the ball to the hole quite frequently. He appears confident and quicker taking the ball to the hole. BTW: he was also hittting 3's with ease and consistency, perimeter and paint defense looked very good. He will be league MVP this year providing this teammates step up!!!!
Martin- chomping at the bit and looking forward to his SR year, appears to be ready to provide SR leadership. Also was stroking the 3 consistently. 1 word for Martin "INTENSE"!
Strait- also looking forward to his SR year. Looked trimmer and quicker. Still same ole Strait with many post moves. Expect him at Center, more info to follow as to why.
AS for the Freshman: Selvig, Qvale, and Hurley.
Selvig did a little of everything but needs to find his stroke, very inconsistent. Either Tinkle is shorter or Selvig is a legit 6'11", he is taller than Tinkle. He is solid defensively, great passer, and ball handler. He needs to beef up, but I see him contributing big minutes if he does not redshirt.
Qvale- solid rebounder, good shot blocker, very confident, yet raw offensively. Has some range. I think a redshirt year would do him wonders.
Hurley- He is very motivated to prove naysayers wrong and earn his scholarship. Very personable and easy to talk to kid. He is in good shape and already hitting weights hard. Offensively he is ready. Defensively, he was working hard, with his build and athleticism, I will not be suprised if he becomes a solid defender too. Redshirt is best for him too.
Speaking of Freshman, I heard that MSU recruit Edwards got in some kind of trouble, but not legal related. No idea on specifics. Anyone know?
I mentioned earlier looks like Strait will be at Center this year. Why? Qvale should redshirt. Bad news, I hear Vanderjagt broke his leg and is out most of the summer. Yet to be determined how it will effect him come basketball season.
Now the Suprise. Lloyd Phillips, (SO) 5-foot-10 from Allen County CC, Phillips will have three years left to play for the Grizzlies. Lloyd averaged 17.2 ppg and 3.5 assists this season for ACC. He shot 48.3% (70-145) from three-point range. Phillips, from Washington, D.C., attended Mercyhurst NE (PA), but did not play at the Erie, PA school. This kid impressed me ALOT!!!!!!!!! He is as quick as Ellis, not sure if he can pick a pocket like Ellis though. I do know though he is every bit the ballhandler and can do what he wants offensively. He took the ball to the hole consistently, with more hops than Ellis. However, he can bury the 3 consistently. He was 5 of 8 in the hour I watched. In short, Bryan Ellis with a 3!!! What a get by the GRIZ, just hope he transistions well.
I encourage anyone to drop by the U any given weeknight to find out when the boys are scrimmaging. I hope to see more players later, and hope to provide a few more updates if time permits.
Also of note, McGillis is a legit D1 player and has improved his ballhandling ALOT. After seeing him play I do wish he was a GRIZ!
A few HS players of note that impressed me at camp, FR Guard Ben Roberts of Sentinel and a 6'5" Canadian, originally from Sudan. Cannot say let alone spell his name, but he is a jumping jack, will be a JR this coming school year. From the little I saw, he is a legit div 1 recruit, and GRIZ are one of the 1st onto him. Sounds like he wants to be a GRIZ too. I hope they get an early commit from him. I would take a chance on him.
That is it for now.
