Early summer Griz Basketball update, 1 pleasant surprise!!!!

Well Egrizzers, I have some early summer basketball information for you all. I watched the GRIZ scrimmage, and plan to a few more times soon. Here are a few observations.
Hasquet- took the ball to the hole quite frequently. He appears confident and quicker taking the ball to the hole. BTW: he was also hittting 3's with ease and consistency, perimeter and paint defense looked very good. He will be league MVP this year providing this teammates step up!!!!

Martin- chomping at the bit and looking forward to his SR year, appears to be ready to provide SR leadership. Also was stroking the 3 consistently. 1 word for Martin "INTENSE"!

Strait- also looking forward to his SR year. Looked trimmer and quicker. Still same ole Strait with many post moves. Expect him at Center, more info to follow as to why.

AS for the Freshman: Selvig, Qvale, and Hurley.
Selvig did a little of everything but needs to find his stroke, very inconsistent. Either Tinkle is shorter or Selvig is a legit 6'11", he is taller than Tinkle. He is solid defensively, great passer, and ball handler. He needs to beef up, but I see him contributing big minutes if he does not redshirt.
Qvale- solid rebounder, good shot blocker, very confident, yet raw offensively. Has some range. I think a redshirt year would do him wonders.
Hurley- He is very motivated to prove naysayers wrong and earn his scholarship. Very personable and easy to talk to kid. He is in good shape and already hitting weights hard. Offensively he is ready. Defensively, he was working hard, with his build and athleticism, I will not be suprised if he becomes a solid defender too. Redshirt is best for him too.
Speaking of Freshman, I heard that MSU recruit Edwards got in some kind of trouble, but not legal related. No idea on specifics. Anyone know?

I mentioned earlier looks like Strait will be at Center this year. Why? Qvale should redshirt. Bad news, I hear Vanderjagt broke his leg and is out most of the summer. Yet to be determined how it will effect him come basketball season.

Now the Suprise. Lloyd Phillips, (SO) 5-foot-10 from Allen County CC, Phillips will have three years left to play for the Grizzlies. Lloyd averaged 17.2 ppg and 3.5 assists this season for ACC. He shot 48.3% (70-145) from three-point range. Phillips, from Washington, D.C., attended Mercyhurst NE (PA), but did not play at the Erie, PA school. This kid impressed me ALOT!!!!!!!!! He is as quick as Ellis, not sure if he can pick a pocket like Ellis though. I do know though he is every bit the ballhandler and can do what he wants offensively. He took the ball to the hole consistently, with more hops than Ellis. However, he can bury the 3 consistently. He was 5 of 8 in the hour I watched. In short, Bryan Ellis with a 3!!! What a get by the GRIZ, just hope he transistions well.

I encourage anyone to drop by the U any given weeknight to find out when the boys are scrimmaging. I hope to see more players later, and hope to provide a few more updates if time permits.

Also of note, McGillis is a legit D1 player and has improved his ballhandling ALOT. After seeing him play I do wish he was a GRIZ!
A few HS players of note that impressed me at camp, FR Guard Ben Roberts of Sentinel and a 6'5" Canadian, originally from Sudan. Cannot say let alone spell his name, but he is a jumping jack, will be a JR this coming school year. From the little I saw, he is a legit div 1 recruit, and GRIZ are one of the 1st onto him. Sounds like he wants to be a GRIZ too. I hope they get an early commit from him. I would take a chance on him.

That is it for now.

Has Phillips been cleared by the NCAA clearing house yet?
I am not sure, but doubt offseason scrimmaging is any kind of violation. Either he has been cleared or chances are looking good. He made a very good impression on me. I hope he is cleared, he can be a huge help to the GRIZ, and quite a get.

I was just curious, and you are right anyone can play with the team in a pick up game!

interesting information, inasmuch as phillips has not been officially announced, and is not on the official roster. if he's cleared to play this could be quite a coup for us. i'd read that with another year of jaycee ball he might have been a high-major prospect.

If Phillips is here, it seems likely he will be a Griz. Vanderjagt still could redshirt a year. Thanks for the info mtgrizrule! :thumb:

Phillips has grade issues but is taking classes at his JC and Tinks thinks he will pull it off.

When I read this post originally the thing that surprised me was that the griz and Cats are holding their respective camps are on the same week. maybe i am wrong but it seemed to that the camps in the past were on staggered weeks in June - by design or not. Anyway from what I am told Sentinels Andy Garland, and Mark Henkle are in Bozeman this week for the Bobcat camp and so far Garland is playing very well after only two days. Garland is a little bit of a tweener for college ball at 6-4ish, but he is one hell of a high school basketball player. I will interested to hear come the end of the summer what coaches/scouts have to say of his ability to play D-1 ball. my self I have not seen him play on the perimeter (where he will need to play in college) Sentinel played him mainly in the blocks in the 3 games i saw him in last winter, but i told he does have perimeter skills

griz rule: i'm curious about any number of other players: elgin-taylor, graves, sharp, rundles, watson, staudacher. were they in the scrimmage?

I wish I had updates on these guys, all are back at their respected homes right now. I expect Watson and Elgin-Taylor to be here the next few weeks. This is usually the time of year newbies come in to scrimmage, get to know the community, set up classes, and evaluated by staff and weight trainer. They are given their workout programs, go back home for about a month, then back to missoula in August.

For those interested in watching scrimmage. Thursday they will be scrimmaging in the Aux Gym, not sure beyond that. Usually most any weeknight somewhere between 7 and 9.

Also, the canadian kid originally from Sudan, dominated camp today. This kid will not be unnoticed for long. Missoula Sentinel Freshman Ben Roberts is turning the heads that count, and has arrived on the collegiate radar. This kid is the real deal. I said this a few months ago and will continue to say it "He will be a Div 1 player if he choses basketball over football and baseball!!!!"
The coaching staff likes what they have seen and his mental make up is that of jr or sr already.

BTW, caught another scrimmage today. Selvig started off slow, but found his groove. After that, he was hitting jump hooks, leaners, and 3's, seven of 9 shots after starting 0 for 4. Qvale timed some rebound tips well and always near the ball. Also hit some 13 to 18 foot jumpers. He has a good nose for the ball and should be a good shot blocker. I do think he is a year away though.
Martin was average tonight. Hasquet cooled down from the perimeter, but was still taking the ball to hole on everyone, and rebounding with passion!!!!
Phillips was more of a creator tonight setting up teammates. He has impressed me both scrimmages thus far.
