Early Signing Class - O Line Emphasis

Which haven't?
Seriously? The offense has been the brightest part of what disappointingly ended up an average year. I am looking forward to seeing these new hogs dominate. Seems like Bob & Co finally figured out that behind every NC team is an elite OL & DL. Average players can be made to look elite behind those types of lines. See ohhhh almost every skilled position player we have except for RB's and TE's.

do you think they have solved the dline problem? After Hayden is done (likely Saturday afternoon) the entire roster will include a grand total of one dline guy over 255 pounds (they just lost the one HS kid that is 290 plus they were heavily after to the cats, as well as 2 OL both programs were after).

High school recruits weren't going to solve that in the short-term. They are going to hit the transfer portal hard.

Brandon Casey is another OL that decided he wanted to be @ the top of the food chain as a GRIZ as opposed to becoming a fat, furry, water borne rodent with big buck teeth @ and big, flat tail @ Oregon State so beating the Beavers 🦫 for Kaikoa Kanakaole is not a first for us. And even more impressive, when we went head-to-head with them for Mr. Casey, they still belonged to a real conference, The PAC-12 before implosion, and they had a good head coach, former OSU great QB and Pflu's GRIZ OC , now MSU Sparty HC Jonathan Smith. We will go head-to-head again with the Beavs in the future and will win some, lose some.

In Sept. of 1996, being young and dumb, we decided to drive from Billings to Oregon to watch our GRIZ play in Corvallis--we drove my Aunt's Plymouth Acclaim, which was a warmed up K car 🚗 !!!

We were led by Ah Yat # 1, Brian, Brian had two WR's named Paceco and Douglas and we had a 300 lb. beast on our 4-3 D line named Brian Toone from Butte, now a fine jeweler in Missoula.

And it was a complete beat down--our Mic Dennehy-led GRIZ pounded The Beavs 36-14, and we almost felt sorry for them. OSU's equivalent to the GSA was The Beaver 🦫 Believers, and after that Big Sky beat down at what was then Reser Stadium, they were pretty despondent !!! ( To be fair, OSU would soon hire Mike Riley, and the Beavs would become a contender in the Pac-10, pre Colorado and Utah.) And the Acclaim has long since gone to the big junkyard in the sky, and we now fly on Alaska Airlines from Billings to Portland, but it was a fun trip almost 30 years ago !!!

I agree with Helena--we will have to go to the portal for a big, mean 280-300 lb. NT to play with our own Jareb Ramos, 6-4, 285, who will hopefully become somewhat similar to Gubner and Hayden next year.

If I had my way--Please humor me, I am getting old and infirm and it's almost Christmas !!!--we would sign 2-3 big DT's from the portal, junk the 3-3-5, and go back to a base 4-3-4 Jerome Souers, Mike Breske, Kraig Paulson defense! !!! ( All kidding aside, has any college team playing the 3-3-5 ever won a major bowl game or an NC ? I remember 2-3 years ago, TCU used the 3-3-5 in the NC against Georgia in the FBS nationsl championship game, and they just got destroyed 65-7, the worst loss ever in an FBS bowl game !!! I don't believe any NFL teams use the 3-3-5. )

There is so much misunderstanding about the 3-3-5. Alot of teams run very similar defense. The bobcats run a 4-2-5 but the rush edge is really a hybrid LB. We just call it a LB but they are similar positions. That rush defender will often stay with a TE or RB if they are in the flat. Lots of college football teams run a 4-2-5 very effectively. The personnel will change with the down and distance. Our problem was not the 3-3-5 scheme but just a lack of speed at LB and a gap eating 0 or 1a tech like you mentioned.

Not happening. We'd need to sign more like 6-7 big DT's because we'd need 2 starters, 2 BU's and 2 more in case of injury/development...don't see that happening. Bobby would rather have 15 safeties on the roster.

TWO guys on the defensive roster over 270. DE's in the 235-253 range. That ain't gonna cut it...

edited: we have two guys...Hayden and Ramos...That's it.

Yes, but you're right, AZ, because Hayden is a grad transfer and won't be here next year. Hayden came from Monmouth through the portal and most likely has to be replaced by another hopefully 280-300 lb. DT from the portal to platoon hopefully with GRIZ DT Jareb Ramos, 6-4, 285. After playing behind Gubner and then Hayden, I hope that Ramos is ready to start next year !!!

If you live in Missoula, GTID, please take Jake out to breakfast, lunch and dinner several times a month. He needs to get up to @ 280 so that he can battle these 280-300 pound + O linemen he is going to face. I am about 6-1, 145, so Jake seems huge to me but for a NT, he's pretty puny @ 6-2, 256.

No the Dline isn't resolved and won't be for a while. I think that is going to be a thorn in our side unless there are some portal transfers in.

Riley Wilson essentially plays like a flex DE in this scheme. Obviously they switch up who’s rushing, but the majority of the time it’s Wilson.

I agree short term portal is a only way, but doesn't another year lacking HS kids means more years of portal to come? Eventually you need HS kids signed at positions to not need to use the portal to fill them

I don't see the issue with getting interior DL from the portal. What is the issue with using the portal, it is another tool in the process. They didn't sign a high school QB, so where is the outrage?

At this point they have to use both processes, but it would be nice to see better HS recruiting at those positions so they don’t have to rely on bringing in a transfer every year. I think the transfer portal is an easier evaluation though on talent.

I think you can grab interior DL from the portal every year and just grab a HS kid when you see a guy that you can't pass up. The DL wasn't even in the top 3 issues on the defense this year.
