Font Size:Default font sizeLarger font sizeShare Former Missoula Sentinel standout Dylan Steigers suffered a life-threatening injury during Eastern Oregon's spring football game Saturday in LaGrande, Ore., his high school coach Pete Joseph said Sunday.

Joseph said Steigers was in a Boise hospital Sunday after suffering a massive brain injury.

"They were going to try to do surgery and try to relieve the bleeding, but it was too extensive," said Joseph, who has been in contact with the Steigers family since the injury occurred. "Basically, he's been brain dead since 4 o'clock (Saturday)."

"I don't know the exact circumstances of what happened," Joseph added. "I don't know if he was on offense or defense. I don't know if his helmet came off and he got hit in the head or if it was a knee to the head or head-to-head contact, but he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage. They Life-flighted him from LaGrande, Ore., to Boise. I'm not sure exactly what hospital he's at."

Joseph said he and Steigers have remained close since Steigers was the captain of Joseph's first team at Sentinel. Steigers is listed as a freshman wide receiver on the Eastern Oregon roster.

"He's a great football player," Joseph said.

Steigers finished his career at Sentinel in 2006 and caught a touchdown pass in the Shrine Game that summer. He has a young daughter.

R.I.P., Dylan. A huge bummer for all.

Wow, I went to Sentinel with him, and though I didn't know him many of my friends did. Very sad news

Dylan was a great kid who had a positive influence on many. He was the type that volunteered to coach Little League just to help out and stay involved.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom and Cindy and their entire family, as well as Dylan's girlfriend and their 2 year old daughter.

ESPN just picked up on this story too:

Horrible story.. football is relatively safe, sounds like a bad freak accident that happened. :(

Very tragic. Condolences to the family and friends, particularly his parents, partner, and daughter.

A couple hundred spectators were at Community Stadium on Saturday for the Mountaineers' annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage. Steigers' family members -- parents Tom and Cindy, of Missoula, partner Liz Apostol and their 2-year-old daughter, London -- were there to cheer him on.

Very proud and humbled that this is, in part, Dylan's legacy.

It's so sad that he was lost to a tragedy like this a few years ago. It's equally inspiring to see that his legacy and the advocacy to prevent these types of things from occurring will continue to carry on.

God bless his family and friends, I saw some photos on FB of them all waiting to be part of the signing.

Man, that's sad. I think tragedies like this have been occurring without a lot of national attention for years. I knew a young man a couple years ahead of me in high school who died exactly like this. Walked off the filed, threw up and then lost consciousness. Our stadium was named after a young man who died the same way about 10 years before that.
It's heartbreaking.

Horrible, So sad when someone so young is taken, makes it hard
to rationalize a tragedy like this. One wonders if "they" can develop
some kind of test to give full contact athletes that will prevent this ??

I attended a mandatory first aid training course for little league coaches that included recognizing and dealing with concussions. the concussion segment is the direct result of those folks who were the driving force behind the Steigers Act. good for them!
