Dylan Cook

It’s surprising with all the experts here that very few have any idea that the Griz have made a switch at the important starting right tackle position. Cook has clearly beat out last years starter at that position and is one of the reasons the offense is doing so well. If you’re not sure just watch. It’s easier to see on tv but he is doing a great job. He looks to be the tallest O lineman and is in the best shape. Perhaps they can let him throw the ball too since he knows how to do that.

To me Colten is better at RT not as quick as Dylan. At the end of game at UCD they had Dylan at LT and Colton at RT. Turner broke his big run behind Dylan. Beavers is a good OT also. Tough battle and all three are playing. :thumb:

For absolutely no reason, I continue to think when the dust settles Cook will be at Left Tackle and Keintz will be at Right Tackle. I just think Keintz has a higher ceiling than Beaver.

Surprised there hasn’t been more information about Dylan on Egriz or maybe I missed it.
Interesting story about a Butte kid who played QB at Butte High and QB at MT Northern as a redshirt freshman. Then made transition to OT for the Griz and playing well this year at his new position.
Usually the Butte kids get praise on Egriz. Dylan has the size and athleticism to be a NFL caliber OT if he continues to improve. At this point he may be a candidate for most improved or best new comer for the Griz.
It was mentioned on another thread how difficult it is for college players to transition to new positions. Dylan is doing great so far.
There was a lot earlier when he was awarded the schollie by Hauck.

According to the Participation lists, he's only been in two games, so pretty hard to gauge how well he's doing. Do you have more information?

He has actually played in 4 games and started 2 if you read the participation list correctly. He is getting the experience that he needs, has great feet and with increased strength and with increased experience has a high ceiling.

64 COOK, Dylan 4/2 ... XXX XXX START START
I stand corrected; missed the starts. Also has the advantage of lining up next to Mallory, who is a beast.

I know Dylan very well, and covered him in his time at Northern. He came to Northern to play QB, and they were pretty high on him as a RS. His RS-frosh season he was a in a three-way battle for the starting job and wound up third, though IMHO he was easily the second-best of the three guys. Dylan got some garbage time throughout that season and played pretty well. Then, in the spring of that year, new head coach Andrew Rolin opened up the starting job with the same three guys, but said he was going to name a starter before they all left for the summer. The depth chart came out the same as the year before.

Rolin saw an un-tapped beast in Cook at other positions, and btw, he was already Northern's long-snapper at that point and damn good at it. So, in the offseason, Rolin told Cook he'd easily be an NAIA All-American TE, and even suggested he could be a great two-way player having him play DE too. Dylan reported to fall camp for his sophomore year, but, one day in, changed his mind, and left the Lights. He didn't do it in a negative way, or trash Rolin or anybody else on the way out, he just decided that, he came to play QB at Northern and it didn't work out.

I didn't get a chance to talk to Dylan before he left Havre, but was told that he had enrolled at UM and had asked if he could walk-on. I believe originally, he thought TE, but, the Griz said yes, only as an OL. I ran into him at several Griz games last season, and talked to him about why he left Northern. He said, if he couldn't play QB at the Frontier Conference level, then why not see what he could do at a different position at a much higher level of football. He told me it was a dream of his to play bigtime college football all along. He also told me, at that time, he was worried about the OL transition because, at that time, he was actually losing weight.

Fast forward to this spring, talking to Bobby at the Spring GSA Tour in Havre, I asked him about Cook, and he said even then, that what he's doing is incredible, and that he was, at least, going to be in the mix come fall. And from that point on, it appears that Dylan has just kept getting better and better.

As an aside, I don't think there's any hard feelings on either side. Dylan is still really good friends with a bunch of guys here at Northern, and I know he's keeping an eye on what the Lights are doing. I also asked Rolin about it right after the video of Dylan getting awarded a scholarship came out, and he said he was super-proud of him and happy for him, and Rolin, who played QB at San Diego, and who also has been an assistant coach at San Diego and San Jose State, said that what Dylan is doing is literally unheard of. Certain transitions from one position to another, yes, but from third-string NAIA quarterback to starting right tackle for a Division I program, it's unheard of.

Thanks George, thought you would have some good information, thanks for sharing. Any analysis on his performance this year? :thumb:

This kid will be all-conference before it’s over. If this was his RSsoph season, I’d say he’s an all-American in his senior season. His footwork & hand placement gets better every week - watch his technique when you get the chance. Sneed’s running sneaks to the right because of Cook & Mallory. Once he becomes confident, he’ll be dominant.

I don't have any expertise in line play, but I've been intrigued by how quickly Cook and Mallory have become key parts of the O-line, so I've focused on them a bit in the past few games. And been really impressed. They look strong in both run blocking and pass protection.

I'm sure it is one the key reasons the Griz run game has risen from the dead.

Wouldn't be surprised if Cook and Mallory are rated one of the best guard/tackle tandems in the league by year's end -- if not the best.

They took the OL starters out at end of Davis game when Turner had his big run. Beaver at LT and Cook at RT, bank on it! If any doubt, re-watch last Saturday’s game!

Cook LT, Pillans LG, Martin C, Ganoung RG, and Keintz RT on Turner’s run

Starters for Davis: Beaver LT, Villanueva LG, Sirmon C, Mallory RG, Cook RT

Dylan is a great kid. He’s also a Dean’s list student. Older brother Dallas had academic issues but was a hell of a QB. Dallas owns most all the MT AA records for a QB, except TD passes in a game (7) which Dylan has. You’d all know his name well except Dylan broke his collarbone on the first half of his first game as senior (former Griz recruit Nate Ferguson, then a sophomore) came on and won that game on a Double OT FG btw, and Cook’s injury kind of led to Ferg punting the rest of the way, and led to the freshman start of current senior Butte QB and Cat Commit, Tommy Mellott. Dylan’s little Brother is a Sophomore at Butte. His dad had some brief NFL experience I believe.

BG--what position does the youngest play?

This is the kind of post that makes all the other BS on this site worth wading through.

Thanks, GF.

I agree, and that really does put his situation in perspective. Really interesting stuff, George, thanks.

Thanks BG for the information on Dylan and his family, nice to get incite

Another good game for Dylan. When defenders get double teamed by Cook and Mallory they are up against the great China wall.
Sulser got his throw to Sneed, maybe Cook will get his chance to throw this year.
