Tolbert leaves Lady Griz
By BILL SPELTZ of the Missoulian

Dvera Tolbert, who provided valuable depth for the Montana women's basketball team in its run to the NCAA tournament last March, has left the Lady Griz.

“She just went home this summer and didn't complete summer school,” Montana veteran coach Robin Selvig said Tuesday.

From the moment Tolbert arrived on campus for informal workouts last fall, she made an impact with her shooting, passing and dribbling skills. The 6-foot freshman forward from Hardin showed flashes of her potential on Valentine's Day at Sacramento State, collecting 10 points and seven rebounds in a 75-63 win.

Tolbert also made her presence felt in her final game. Pitted against a stronger, quicker NCAA tournament team from Vanderbilt, the Lady Griz dropped a 75-47 decision. But Tolbert and fellow freshman Sarah Ena showed unusual poise, with the former collecting six points and two rebounds.

“Dvera has a lot of potential,” Selvig said. “She's a great kid and we really enjoyed having her.

“But we've got good players inside returning, and Jessa (Linford) was really coming on. Shadra (Robison) will also be in the battle. It opens up for someone else.”

Tolbert finished 10th in scoring for the 2007-08 Lady Griz at 3.0 points per game. Of the players in the top 10, Tolbert had the best shooting percentage from the field, hitting 52.6 percent (40 for 76).

Selvig said the Lady Griz won't do anything with Tolbert's scholarship this coming year. In addition to Ena, Linford and Robison, Montana returns rock-solid senior post players in Tam Guardipee and Britney Lohman.

Sadly, Dvera is going to look back someday and wonder what could have been. Academics will take her further in life than that round ball will. Sad, sad, sad.

I hope she take advantage of either Rocky or Easter... err Montana State - Billings. I would have to imagine there may be some opportunities there, closer to Hardin.

I think you have to attend classes there too. :twocents:

This is tough for Lady Griz BB. But I agree with GB1. It may be toughest on Dvera. There is no substitute for an education. Let's hope that she realizes that and gets herself back into school, works hard and graduates.

Good luck to you Dvera.

tough adjustment for anybody to go from small-town high school to college campus while adjusting to tougher academics and the rigors of scholarship basketball. dvera had evident talent but might a redshirt year have been the proper ticket?

I like to see all freshman redshirt.

But, in regards to Tolbert, Redshirting would not have worked.

Cut the excuses city. Montana is a small town, and MANY before Dvera have done just fine. Selvig went out of his way to try and help her succeed, but the player has to want it.

GB1

Listen none of us know the complete story as to why she left. From the article it sounds like Robin do not know the whole story, as to why she did not finish summer school. There is more to this than meets the eye. There is no reason to take pot shots at a young athlete. Like I said before I wish he luck and if there are other opportunities that come her way I wish her the best.

If you want to call it a potshot, go for it. I made a factual statement and stand by it. Others agreed but you single me out. Ever heard the one about the Pot and the Kettle?

Dvera was actually a hard worker, based on what the coach has said about her in the past. Saw on the news last night that her Uncle had died and she had some other family stuff going on it sounded like... compound that with someone that misses home, and it's easy to understand why she left.

GB, I think it's unfair of you to characterize her the way you are.

She had a lot of potential, actually... and in a couple years, the Lady Griz will miss what she could have been imo.

My comments were soley based on the comments of Robin Selvig. If there are extenuating circumstances then of course it would change my view. You must be related to mslcat.

One possibility is for her to attend classes at Little Big Horn College and play basketball for them (they are in the JUCO ranks now), and if she can get things back in order, the possibility of going back to Division 1 can still be a possibility. I believe Selvig gave Kayla Lambert the same possibility years ago but it's all up to the athlete and what they choose to do at this point.

I wish her only the best. It is tough to pass judgement on someone unless you know all the facts. There are a lot of forces that come to bear on a young person who is also trying to play D-1 sports. In my opinion you need to give the benefit of the doubt.

Just my opinion...

Kayla Lambert/Dvera Tolbert, I think we share the same opinion and it's just "politically correct" to keep our mouths shut.

For those of you who want to preach, I've seen it all too often, save your breath.
