Gfeller had 25 points in his 2nd game and had 9 rebounds at half in a 36 point Colfax win. Didn't catch his final rebound stats. Colfax plays the league favorite on Friday night so the competition will get tougher soon.

Thank you again. Love the update. Is Gfeller a recruit who sort of flew under the radar out there, and maybe getting more looks late? Sure in the hell puts up some good numbers, and has a great stroke. I hope he stays with the GRIZ. Wayne is pretty good at holding onto the commitments though.

grizrule: both gfeller and dunn are past the verbal stage. they've signed letters of committment.

Brandon had 4 points on Friday night against some of the best defense I have seen High School kids play. He was double teamed and had a tough shooting night as well as the rest of the team. On Saturday he had 32 points with 8 rebounds and 7 threes.

a few days ago, mario dunn's school, salesian, met archbishop mitty in a clash of the two top high school teams in the bay area. salesian's star is jabari bird, a 6'5" big guard who has committed to cal. mitty's star is 6'8" aaron gordon, a two-time metro player of the year, who has not committed yet. here are links to the result:

finally, here's a link to signing day at salesian:

some editorial comment.

i've seen salesian play. i have two reasons to think that montana got the best player at salesian.

first, dunn is a true point guard, while bird seems to me to be a tweener, not the ball skills to play the three, nor the height to play the four in college. he's a spectacular high school player, but i question whether he'll be that stellar at the college level. dunn? no question,.

second, bird seems like a very mature young man to me, more physically advanced than his high school contemporaries. he looks like a man among boys, while dunn looks like a baby-faced high school kid, with a lot of physical development ahead of him. not that bird will not be good; he'll be playing for monty, and he'll get great coaching. just that in dunn i think we have a player with a lot more physical development ahead of him, a ton more upside.

Thanks for the heads-up on Mario & Salesian, Citay! And the links. The contest between Salesian and Archbishop Mitty played on Dec. 23rd, was the featured game of the Cal State Catholic School Winter Classic played at Cal State East Bay in Hayward. And, the whole event was televised.

Here's the full-game link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpOcXFcRMFQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Make certain to watch the entire first quarter. Mario Dunn singlehandedly keeps Salesian in the game (with 6 or 8 points), and leads them on a 14-2 run to put his team comfortably in the lead. Interesting that early on in the game, the commentators did not include Dunn in the "nationally ranked" discussion... until later.

Thanks for the updates, gentlemen.

I really like these players. I also love the way Tinks recruits. I think there have been coaches at UM in the past who wouldn't have spent the effort to recruit guys like Will, Kareem, Dunn and Gfeller, maybe feeling they were "better than" UM and the BSC and would commit elsewhere.

quite a game for dunn, and quite a few mentions for montana. dunn scored 13 of his 15 when the game was still in question, got to share the post-game interview with jabari bird, and was written up next day as the "high-flying" dunn. i think he can improve his ball-handling skills, but he possesses the qualities you can't teach, quickness and great court vision. salesian is a much more cohesive team when he's out there.

I dont understand why the gap in recruiting a big man since Qvale left. He must of known he needed someone who could play with his back to the basket. I realize that solid big men are at a premium but if Tinks recruits like everybody thinks he can surely he can convince a big man to grace our presence.

Big men wanting to play with their backs to the basket are a dying breed. Every big guy wants to play the European game like Dirk and stand outside the arc and cast 3's. Besides, banging inside on both ends is hard work and offers little return in todays run and gun offensive sets.

yo, bobaloo, whereyaat? where ya comin' from? not so long ago tinks recruited two good big men, same class, qvale and selvig. he then went out and got the ninth-rated high school big man on the west coast, kid named eric hutchison, followed by 6'9" bill reader out of oregon, then 7' jaycee big man marco kovacevic. if all had stuck, all three would be playing right now, on the same team, and we would not be bemoaning our lack of an inside presence.

unhappily, recruiting is not an exact science. hutch has not lived up to early billing, and both reader and kovacevic stumbled over a little hurdle called the classroom. i regret greatly that we have no good bigs to go with cherry in his final year, because tinks had put together on paper a versatile dynamite--and yes, big--team. but qvale, selvig, reader, kovacevic and martin? tinks can recruit bigs. and the next ones will have the luxury of playing with mario dunn.

Mario Dunn's team (Salesian) played against Taft - a school that has a 6-4 senior named Kris Yanku who is going to NAU. Yanku (#4 in the white uniform) had 38 of Taft's 46 points.

No mention of our guy, Mario Dunn because Salesian didn't post a box score. However, Salesian's big gun is a kid by the name of Jabari Bird (#23 in the black uniform) who is headed to Cal Berkely with Mike Montgomery. Bird had 23 of Salesian's 58 points.

Mario Dunn is #3 in the black uniform. It appears that Yanku was able to shoot over him with the 3 ball.

Maybe they should be playing with Yanku instead of Dunn. From the video, looks like Yanku owned Dunn. Why would any kid want to play at NAU in front of 300 fans, half of which are rooting for the opponent? Tinks should get on this kid. No LOI signed yet, right?

Bearly Visible - Can't speak for Yanku, but Mario Dunn is legit. The kid plays for the Oakland Soldiers, which is one of the top AAU programs in the country. They recruit heavily and you don't play them unless you are an incredible basketball players. Lebron even played for them. Dunn is the kind of athlete we rarely see in the Big Sky, a 6'0" PG that can take it to the rack with authority. He will no doubt be a good one!

Boys Basketball Roundup: Friday, December 28 Results

At the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic, Salesian (9-2) was outscored 44-26 in the second half in a 56-42 loss to St. Augustine (8-1).

Jabari Bird (Cal Berkely recruit) was held to seven points, and Mario Dunn (Montana) led the team with 16.

The Pride will play Windward (6-5) in the third place game at 6:40 on Saturday.

Brandon Gfeller update. In a basketball tournament in Lewiston Idaho, Colfax 165 students played Lewiston 1250 students. Colfax won by 25 points yesterday with Brandon scoring 22 points. Lewistons' record is 2-8. Then today we played Walla Walla 1350 students and beat them by 8. Walla Walla is now 9-1. Brandon had 28 points and was named tournament MVP. I have lived in Colfax my whole life and don't recall playing 3A and 4A schools let alone beating them. It was pretty exciting to see our kids rise to the occasion!
