Duke-postgame toughts

The bashers will find something to bitch about, but after watching the game, I am very much encouraged with the GRIZ. They came out aggressive on defense and executed early on offense. They also played a very good 2nd half. Offensively we did well, kudos to Duke for taking Staudacher out of the game. We moved the ball around well. I think we should have learned we need to improve on how quickly we move the ball and it needs to be crisper passing. The turnovers and a few bad shots were not so much bad passes, but more of Duke being quicker than we are used to playing. Against BSC teams these are uncontested open shots, against Duke the shots are contested. Many of the turnovers were more of not securing the ball or bobbling it. I thought we handled Duke's pressure and traps well.

Defensively, I was impressed with our discipline, and the matchup zone actually looked better than average, dare I say good. That zone is much improved from CSU. Man defense was better too, but I think the breakdowns more from Duke being Duke than the GRIZ not playing good defense. A few of their alley oops were us overplaying ballside and perfect passes by Duke. Granted we got beat badly inside, but it was more due to youth than bad play. Selvig and Qvale were where they had to be, just too tenative against the likes of Duke.

Turnovers and rebounding absolutely killed us. This is THE GAME this team will have to learn the most from. Execution wise I liked what I saw on both ends of the court. I thought we would be more overmatched in personnel than we were. It looked like Hasquet, Johnson, Qvale, Selvig, CET, Michael Taylor, Staudacher, and McGillis (even though he is still pressing) belonged there. Sharp played well too, and used smarts to produce. However size wise at that level he needs to be a 3, Unfortunately his game is that of a 4. Stats wise Staudacher did nothing, but that was due to Dukes game plan. They refused to let Staudacher have any open looks. To the GRIZ credit, they did not try forcing the ball to him either.

I also have to credit to the announcing team. They did more homework and knew more about GRIZ basketball history and our team than I expected. It would be nice if ESPN would learn from them for our beloved FCS football playoffs. For anyone associated with ACC basketball, this GRIZ fan is very appreciative of the announcers' professionalism and knowledge.

Overall this GRIZ fan is very pleased with the Duke game. The biggest thing I hope they learned was the adverse environment and no matter who or where they play, it has to be played with 100% energy and execution. I hope some of DUKE's atmosphere can be brought back to Dahlberg. I also hope when Wayne breaks down the game film he notices that Selvig and Michael Taylor are deserving of more PT. The GRIZ are better with both or either on the court. Also next time we have a team taking away Staudacher, get Johson in there. Athletically and skills wise he is much better suited against the better teams. I do wonder how well the GRIZ could do with Johson driving and Stauds spotting up?

Granted we loss, but the GRIZ are a much improved team since the CSU game. They will make a run for the BSC title if they play like they did against Duke.

I watched the game on TV

Coach K was prepared for Ryan, they were all over him to begin with.
I would love to see AJ and Stauds in at the SAME time ! One good about AJ he pushes it up the floor
with great quickness, the bad I think he is averaging 1 turnover every 3 minutes he has played so far.
Cet ..too many turnovers so far this year also..quite dribbling for .. Gods SAKE !!
Selving..nice three ball. Jack is coming around..nice drives. Jordo nice job also.

All in all a good learning exprience and great for the kids to remember.

Heck..we may see Duke again this year as 16 seed when we beat PSU in the tourney !!

Thanks guys, appreciate your thoughts. I look for this team to continually improve. Wayne's world ain't dead yet. :thumb:

I agree that the Griz were credible or better today. The horrible run starting about halfway through the first half (when UM was up a few) took UM out of the game. There was a period when UM had 6 or 7 turnovers in 7 or 8 (or 9) possessions. This was the start of a 20-4 Duke run, which ultimately was a 30-9 run. UM came back for awhile in the 2nd half, but just couldn't sustain the little runs.

Duke killed UM on the boards, including 19 offensive rebounds. UM had 20 turnovers, to Duke's 10. Duke had 14 steals to UM's 4 (3 by Selvig and 1 by Stockton).

I thought Sharp played quite well. Hasquett had a solid game for him (which is a very good game for most).

I Read the ESPN article at http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=283280150. I don't FSN SOutheast but, Duke was without a key starter and just got off a game heavy road trip. Wonder how things would gone if the Duke was at full-strength and the game was played at a neutral court? Well the only thing you can really do after playing a team like Duke is take the positives from the game and build on them and be happy with and put to good use the gaurentee $ you got from playing them at their home.

Kudos to Jim O'Day for scheduling Duke, an ACC school which is the best in basketball. This game will benefit our team as it will give our players the confidence of having played the best.

I don't know who scheduled Duke, but as of a couple of years ago, the basketball coaches did most of their own scheduling, and the AD did the football scheduling.

Spanky, I wasn't correcting anyone. I don't know who scheduled the Duke game. I was merely informing the board of what my understanding is generally.

Congrats to Montana...watched the game wearing my Montana gear as I absolutely loathe dook (raised in a Carolina family but rebelled and went to AppSt)....you have many things to build upon and this game will help you.....especially considering Cameron is about the only venue you can be raped on one end of the court and foul out on ticky-tack touch fouls on the other end....also, most officials do not consider kicking the ball away from the point guard a valid defensive stop and will usually award the ball back to you instead of allowing a transition basket.....but welcome to dook basketball in Cameron where the officials cower and wilt in the presence of King Rat....

Two thoughts:

1.I figure CSU would lose to Dook by at least 20 so that means we must have improved about 30 points a game since we played them.

2. Duke is damn lucky to have played our BB team. The football team would have waxed them good.

All in all, a positive experience.

Normally I would agree with the football sentiment.....aw, hell, I still agree with the football sentiment.....how did JMU let dook beat them like a rented mule 1st fball game of the season?
