Ducks vs Griz

thanks for the answers everyone... i still would love to see more of Raason on the floor.... UW is ultra quick and we will need his Defense and athletic ability next game..... again great win, still room for improvement...... i love the momentum this gives us!! GO GRIZ!!

Great win for the GRIZ. Cherry did well for his 1st start. His defense created many turnovers, which is exactly we were told about him. He was huge on their scoring guard, Porter (Pac 10's leading returning scorer).

Tinkle sounds like is very proud of our defense, we threw a lot of looks at them, majority of which were zones by the sounds of things. That is why Young did not see a lot minutes. He is a very good man defender, but from what I seen against Denver, he struggles in covering his area in zone.

Another great game by our bigs, Qvale and Selvig (despite only playing at around 80%). I hope the GRIZ can carry some of this confidence into the UW game, we will need it. I wonder what Tinkle has in mind against the Huskies? I think it would be wise to go with good ballhandlers. Can Cherry keep Isaiah Thomas under control some? If he does, that will be amazing. What a test for a freshman, Will you are expected to defend 2 of the top little guards in the nation, are you up to it? Porter is more of a gunner, but Thomas is more of a total guard, it will be interesting test for the GRIZ. Anything under 20 points from Thomas will be considered a solid job.

Keep it going GRIZ, Great win GRIZ!

It's hard to tell by just listening to the games, but Young seems to be a little foul prone and he doesn't seem to be much of a scoring threat besides the 3-ball which has cooled down since the first couple games. It's really tough to say from only seeing him play a couple games, but he hasn't exactly been tearing it up lately. The D played very well without him tonight.

Sorry if someone mentioned this, but who did Cherry take the place of in the starting lineup? Young or Staudacher? I cant imagine it was Stauds because Tinkle has a man crush on him........

Huge win! This one caught me off gaurd after the Uof Denver performance

Go Grizzlies!

Way to go GRIZ!!! That's a good win against a Pac 10 team. Oregon may be struggling, but Mac Court is always a tough place to play...The ducks have one of the better fan bases the Griz will see this year on the road. Oregon may still pull a season together as they are a young team that will likely mature going into conference play. I'm anxious to see what Sunday brings. But until then, I'm going to rub it in the face of all my Oregon friends that think the Ducks are god.

Go Griz!

These stat keepers are great in Oregon... Oregon misses a 3 pointer, and they put down a missed 3 pointer by Stockton...

Great win by the Griz! I'm pretty surprised honestly, after how the Griz struggled against Denver last week.

sometimes the stats-inputter will initially enter stats for the wrong team. They often have to make changes at a time-out as they have no time to correct things on the fly. Hopefully they corrected that. I watch the live stats quite often and notice the same kind of errors happen a lot.

Great road win Griz! You took it to Pac 10 Oregon, in front of over 7,000 green and yellow duckies.

I saw highlights on the 10 o'clock news, you guys looked like you belonged and THEN SOME! Keep up the great work.

Great win for the Griz. Oregon was picked 6th in the pac 10. Taylor had a great game. He could be the wild card. Stauds 1-6 from 3. Cherry had his best game but he and Johnson each had 5 TO of the total of 19. Pressure on the ball is what it is. McGillis fouls out with 2pts but did have 4 boards which the Griz won. Qvale very good 15pts and 10 boards. This had to be a great confidence booster going up to Washington. As the previous poster said just under 7100 fans wow. 3-16 from 3pt line and 24-31 from the stripe I believe.

An area of concern is obviously the 3-balls. UM is going to need to find someone who can fill those on a semi-regular basis. A couple of huge ones today by Taylor that frankly were the difference makers. But Stauds is about as streaky as streaky gets, and -- too often -- not in a good way. The 3 pointer is such a huge part of college BB these days that you're going to have to find a way to get some down "the pickle barrell".

I was at this game, sitting up in the third deck rafters at Mac Court. And if you were to tell me before the game that the Griz would turn the ball over 19 times and go 3-16 shooting from 3 point range, I woud have thought Oregon would win in a huge blowout.

Early on, it looked like the Griz were nervous and tight, and intimidated by their opponent and the crowd when they fell behind 12-4 early. They looked overmatched. But the defense buckled down and smothered Oregon. The Ducks couldn't buy a basket after the first 8 minutes or so.

Still, I didn't think the Griz played all that well. They got called TWICE for 10 second half-court violations, and twice for 5 second violations, which is totally inexcusable. They were able to scrap their way to a 10 pt halftime lead with Oregon only scoring five points in the final 13 minutes of the first half.

In the second half, Oregon came out with a full court press, which allowed the Griz to spread the floor and get points in the paint that were so elusive in the first half. And Oregon remained ice cold. They must have missed 20 easy layins underneath the basket. And if the Griz hadn't hindered themselves with some really stupid turnovers, missed free throws, and made just a few more of their three point shots, they would have waltzed out of Eugene in a total blowout.

Oregon stinks, and I can't imagine them finishing any higher than the PAC 10 basement. The Ducks looked uninspired, out of sync, and there seemed to be no sense of urgency or any leadership on the floor. Ernie Kent made plenty of excuses in his postgame interview, blaming injuries and such. But didn't give the Griz the respect they deserved for totally shutting them down.

Lastly, the Pit Crew (Oregon's student section) is a classless mob of douchebags. They have a rep, and they didn't disappoint. During player introductions when they were introducing the Montana players, the entire student section turned its back and yelled "SUCKS!" after each of the Griz starting five was introduced. Way to stay classy, losers! I always remembered when opponents were introduced at Dahlberg arena back in the day, and there would be some boos, but for the most part, fans politely applauded them.

Oh, and McArthur Court is a ramshackle. Even old Dahlberg Arena (before the renovation) was a far superior facility. Oregon fans like to think of it as the Boston Garden of the west. It's anything but. It's a good thing the Ducks are building a $200 million state of the art arena because Mac Court is a shack with chairback seats. It does get loud as hell in their because of the way it's constructed, but it's a dump.

Wow, the Big Sky owns the Pac-10 this year. Sac beats OSU, now this stomping. COOL!

Yeah, BSC starting off relatively well against FBS-sized schools...

Northern Colorado (5-0) with wins over Hawaii and Air Force
Montana (4-1) with wins over Boise State and Oregon
Sac State (3-2) with a win over Oregon State
Eastern Washington (2-2) with a 6 point loss to Washington State
...well, I guess then there's the rest of the BSC...
MSU (1-2)
NAU (1-2)
ISU (1-3)
PSU (1-3)
WSU (0-3)

Great win!!

Looks like a beatdown too!

Sac & UM 2-0 vs the Pac 10!! Cool!!!

Meanwhile my team can't by a win...

Im so glad bball is on!!

K, It was Young that got benched in favor of Cherry....Good move IMO.

What is starting to grind my gears (it has for the last 3 years) is the little man crush that Tinks has on Stauds. Stauds last two games go like this: 60 min, 2-9 shooting for 5 pts, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and of course he never made it to the FT line. Oh I think he had 1 steal in the 2 games. I personally think that Staudacher would be more effective coming off the bench. Teams are playing blanket D on him and he is not getting shots. Every once in a while a team wont and he will light it up. If he is coming off the bench, teams will have to change thier game plan a little. His D is better than average and I have heard that he is a,"great Inbounds passer". He could get 15-20 off the bench and still give his team the same #'s.

i too was up in the rafters, section 109--where were you, seatown?--and agree with his assessment: mac court is a dump. it should have been imploded years ago. my nephew and i strolled over to the new arena, which they were working on after dark in an effort to get it ready by next year, and we watched them lower in a huge cement block of seating. question is, will ernie kent ever see the new arena? he's under a lot of fire in oregon right now.

the oregonian account of the game was one big excuse, inasmuch as oregon was missing their starting center and one starting forward, plus porter, their cat-quick guard, re-injured an ankle he'd hurt against portland and only scored two points. "not to make excuses," said kent, but then did.

other than that, the story was not that montana won, but how we won--convincingly. against that oregon lineup, we would win again and again, as we did despite an exasperating number of turnovers, missed threes, missed foul shouts, et. al. we must have left ten points at the foul line, another dozen or so on missed three-pointers, and more on turnovers. after a slow start, we were in control the entire game, against a pac 10 team, on the road.

why? oh, i'm more than happy to count the ways.

athleticism: finally, finally, it can be said--we have athletes! no more brooding about permiter defense. with cherry, a.j., mcgillis and young roaming around out there, we really shut down the oregon offense with a super-quick matchup zone. and let's not forget our bigs--for their size, both qvale and selvig are incredible athletes.

qvale: maybe apart from our overall athleticism, qvale is the most pleasant surprise. the kid just plays now like he owns the paint. frankly, his moves down low remind me of the incredible post moves that joslyn tinkle has, so maybe he's benefitted from the same coaching. unlike last year, he finishes. what nags at me yet is the decision to play him as a true freshman, a year spoiled by injury and inexperience. what a difference it'd be to our program if, like selvig, he were only a sophomore now.

cherry: i cheered when i heard he was starting, and my confidence in this team goes way up when he's in the game. he scored our first four points, two on a steal, and was all over the court, playing houndingly quick defense. i liken playing against him to fighting manny pacqio. he's so quick, and you never know where he'll turn up. his problem is shooting, which is probably why he got him. late in the game, he missed the front end of a one-and-one, and then missed the second of a one-and-one., so one point out of a potnetial four. tinkle pulled him, and i couldn't disagree. his shooting is a liability. but for the first 38 minutes of any game, i want him on the court. we are just a different more athletic and more confident team when he's out there.

a.j.: what to say? this kid is good, and it looks like he's good against any level of competition. and free throws? automatic! his first of the night rimmed out, then he hit 14 in a row. and neither he nor will cherry need a g.p.s. to find the basket.

overall talent: hey, montana is good! this team really has talent, in depth. i believe cherry, selvig and qvale could make any team in the country, and that a.j. could start for any team in the country. these are our premier guys, the ones you want on the floor in a close game. but beyond that, you've got more talented guys in staudacher, young, mcgillis and taylor. taylor, especially, was clutch, nailing two dagger threes down the stretch. if he continues to blossom, this will be huge for us this season.

the weaknesses: three-point shooting! i think we were three for 18, and you just cringed at what a blowout this game could have been had we hit more treys. time and again, on drives to the bucket, a.j. set up our guys for wide-open threes. staudacher hit one, but until taylor hit two down the stretch, we just couldn't buy anthing. i'd heard young was an outside threat, but his two attempts just looked wild.

free-throw shooting: cherry missed down the stretch, selvig missed two at one point, somebody else missed two. take away a.j.'s 14-15, and we're abysmal at the line.

turnovers: apparently, after that embarrassing loss at portland, oregon worked all week on their defense, and they pressed us the entire game. i thought we handled it pretty well, but in the future, i wish we'd try to go over the top of a press a bit more. we didn't till late in the game, when taylor got a breakaway layup. from my view up in the pigeon seats, i could see that play was there for us the entire game, and it might have taken some of the pressure off. in sum, i doubt we'll see a more concerted press all year, and given the way we handled it, i don't think turnovers are going to plague this team this year.

conclusion: this was a pivotal game for me, in terms of my allegiance to this program. the last two times i saw montana play in person, once at sac state, and last year at portland state, we were dismal both times. slow to start, lack of effort, noticeable deficit in talent, no sense the team knew what it was or had any sense of purpose on the court.

i'm happy to say, every one of those concerns has been addressed. and for a kid who grew up on montana basketball in its heyday, and was worried about the overall direction of the program, this game was a huge relief.

The story was buried on the last page of the sports section in the Oregonian today. It was all about how hurt Oregon players were and very little on the Griz.

A lot of students are gone for Thanksgiving break so Mac Court wasn't it's usual self, but it's still a decent win for the griz.

I was sitting WAY up in the rafters on the top balcony. Section 302, first row. The UO had a special they were doing to celebrate the 83rd anniversary of Mac Court by selling balcony seats for $8.30. I couldn't imagine paying full price for those. Wooden seats that were so hard and cramped that even a small child would feel confined.

Yeah, great win indeed! I went with a friend of mine that's a big UO fan, and he had absolutely no respect for Montana going into the game and bet me $5 that Oregon would win by at least 20. So it was thoroughly satisfying to see the Griz do what they did.

I think Ernie Kent is as good as gone. Unless the Ducks rebound and have a strong showing in the PAC 10 and get into the NCAA tournament, he's out. I would imagine Gonzaga's Mark Few will be getting a phone call from Oregon sometime this winter.

If the Griz can cut down on the silly mistakes and improve their three point shooting, they are a team to be reckoned with. I felt that Oregon overall had more talent and better athletes, but Montana's zone defense smothered them, contested every shot, and took away just about everything. The real test will be how they fare against Washington next week, who is going to be a superior opponent to Oregon.

UO students only get Thursday and Friday off of school, so I doubt a high percentage of the student body was out of town on Monday.

They are not in grammer school they are in college and since a majority of the Students at U Of Ore are not from Eugene and the college administration knows this they gave a 1/2 day of classes on Tuesday Wednesday thru Friday off. Which in realty means a portion took the whole week off and the ones who had to stay were probably gone by noon on Monday and whatever was left jetted on Tuesday. Maybe you didn't go to college, but I did and anytime you could stretch a break out a longer than it was, you did no matter what game was being played on campus.
