Draftees From Outside The "Development League"

I didn’t miss anything. I don’t acknowledge defensive terrorists from SS.

Hoops doesn't like players that lead their teams to championships, instead, he favors 6th place finished.

I don’t like dirty players. I don’t like teams that win the conference and then embarrass the conference with playoff losses. SS had 1 playoff win in past 3 years. I believe. UM had 3 playoff wins. I laugh at people like you who harp on winning the conference and then give the conf champ slack when they lose in the first round, even sometimes when seeded. I guess that’s how some never-played-the-gamers think.

UM was a better team than SS this year.

What are u trying to say? Do you think conf rank is more important than playoff wins? Do you think SS was the better team the day we played them? How would they have done if they had lost their good back in the first quarter?

Still playing catchup on our recording, and hit the segment where they played "Stump the Truck." Some Griz fan was quick on the trigger and got Patrick O'Connell in as the first try. The truck got it right away and the studio guys had some nice things to say about him as a Griz. Doesn't seem like he'll get drafted, but at least the national audience got to see his brief highlights and hear about the Griz. How cool is that!

Of course, the guy from Arkansas with the catchy name – Bumper Pool (really!) – got the most time.

Keep whining Hoops...and keep making excuses...I absolutely LOVE it!

Keep avoiding how bad your team has performed in the playoffs. Truly embarrassing. The worst in FCS.

I can't imagine how embarrassing it must be to get your ass beat three times in a row by a team that bad.
Pretty embarrassing. Retribution time.

Have to say, the bias toward drafting from the P-5 programs wasn't quite as skewed as the early rounds suggested. Still, it was pretty strong: NFL teams selected 32 players from G-5 programs* (half of those in the final two rounds), 11 from FCS schools, and 2 from D-II programs. Overall, about 83% of the players drafted came from P-5 programs. I have no idea how many of those P-5 draftees had been cherry-picked from G-5, etc. programs through the portal, but I'm sure there were several.

* Counting BYU as an "outsider" (Independent) since they don't join the Big 12 until this fall.

Not a player or coach associated with Griz football who wouldn't trade seasons with Sac State. The only people that wouldn't are ones like you who convent 6th place finishes.

Poor, poor Deion  ;)

Sanders got his nose out of joint because NFL teams drafted only one HBCU player this year.

ESPN said:
Former Jackson State coach Deion Sanders tweeted Saturday that he is "ashamed" of 31 NFL teams after Isaiah Bolden was the lone HBCU player drafted this year.
Bolden, a cornerback and returner for Jackson State, was selected by the New England Patriots in the seventh round (245th overall) on Saturday.

With [James] Houston [last year] and Bolden, Jackson State had a player drafted in consecutive years for the first time since 1997 and '98.
The NFL started a combine for HBCU players in 2020, although the first year it was held was 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, 47 players took part in the event, which was attended by all 32 teams. This year, the combine was hosted by the HBCU Legacy Bowl, a postseason all-star game to showcase HBCU players.
NFL teams work really hard – and spend a lot of money – on their draft selections. If they only selected one guy, it’s because they didn’t see value there … despite the preferential exposure of the HBCU combine. Of course, the HBCU does present a popular product … they often get great attendance. (For us, when they’re televised, we can’t resist their great “battle of the bands” halftime shows.) And the teams are competitive among themselves.

But what Sanders doesn’t “get” is the fact that the HBCU conferences (MEAC and SWAC), while they sometimes have NFL-worthy players, do not play even a mediocre brand of FCS football. I looked into this some time back for the SWAC. Here’s what I found.
The SWAC is a bottom dweller among all FCS conferences (only the NEC, MEAC, and Pioneer are rated lower). Since 2018, SWAC teams have gone 20-47 in out-of-conference games against FCS opponents. Even then, they’re careful to pick (or can only get) cupcakes … the likes of pitiful South Carolina State (3-8), Howard (5-6 in the equally weak MEAC), and McNeese (4-7 in the Southland). That’s probably why the SWAC has gone (1-6) in the Celebration Bowl against MEAC teams. (Grambling won it in 2016.)

The rest of their OOC games are mostly FBS money games (0-54). Then they fill out their schedules with D-II (they pick on Tuskegee a lot) and NAIA teams. Since 2018, the SWAC has scheduled 41 … and managed to lose three of those.
I haven’t gone as deep for the MEAC, but a quick check shows they also get killed out of conference, even when they play bottom-feeders from a conference like the CAA. Actually, considering the weak “brand” of team football they play, it’s a bit surprising how many HBCU players do get drafted. I suspect that will not continue. if they’re that good, they’ll surely move up through the portal.
