Dorell Thomas

I think he is a walk-on:

1. He last two reported offers on his Twitter page are Des Moines CC and Columbus State (D-2).

2. Never is there a mention of an official visit to UM only a visit and there is a big difference.

3. Counting Braggs, if Thomas is on scholarship that means we are going into next year with 5 freshman that have never played a D-1 game. Seems highly unlikely to me.

I guess we will know if it is announced by the university. I don’t think they can officially announce walk-ons until the first day of school.

I hope he can be a solid defensive player. If not, he'll be a shooter lost on the bench.

Is anybody aware that this kid has an older brother who played at Colorado State the last 3 seasons who just so happens to be in the portal and is 6’9 235lbs? 👀 Could this possibly be a ploy to try and get his older brother to follow him to UM?

Nice investigative work. That makes sense.

I believe we offered him out of high school as well.

I see he's also following Zach Payne on Twitter which is encouraging.

I don't think he is a walk on.

Given his credentials and the official visit, I think it pretty likely he will be on scholarship. A BIG guard!

Still think there is a good chance he is a walk-on:

1. His last two reported offers on his own Twitter page are Des Moines CC and Columbus State (D-2). Why tweet those but not tweet any D-1 offers if you had them? Doesn't make sense to me.

2. The only other two offers reported (and repeated in the Arizona Preps article) are offers from Wyoming and UC-Santa Barbara that he received as a freshman. Almost all of these articles always give "he chose Montana over . . ." but this one didn't. Very similar to Solomon who had big offers early but nothing late (I also suggested he was a walk-on but got blasted by people that pointed to his Florida State offer he received after his freshman year). Using offers received early in a career as some sort of validation is fool's gold. Especially where there is nothing currently reported.

Glad he is on board and hope he has a tremendous career. The brother angle may also be a factor, but I have not seen anything that would suggest he had any current D-1 offers to chose from.

April 13 to May 18 is the Spring signing period. Let's see if he signs a scholarship offer in that time period. If he is a walk on, that won't happen.

One of the interesting side notes to his recruiting is that in a traditional recruiting environment I don't think his recruiting tails off. Covid paired with the saturation of recruiting through the portal is hurting HS recruiting a bit for a lot of kids. Had a kid at a in my area that ton of offers between his FR/SO year of HS. They all went away or dried up by the beginning of this year. Tons of kids are heading the JUCO route and there is a LOT more HS talent available in the late signing period than in recent memory.

I think this is an under-rated get, similar to Braggs last year, that has all the physical appearances of fitting the D1 skill set. Maybe slipped through the recruiting nets a bit. If his signing alsonets his brother, who was highly sought after as a HS SR, then all the better.

I feel that you are absolutely right on this. COVID and the portal have combined to create a logjam of players available. The portal has become a hot bed of activity in the spring recruiting because coaches have the added insight of seeing players perform against tougher competition and therefore a clearer picture of their true ability. In the past, the transfer market was a second thought. Now it is a major part of everyone's market place.

COVID backed everything up for at least 4 years, with the COVID year added to all players playing that year. Many of the high major HS players are still signing early, but most programs are not filling up in November. Instead, they are waiting to see what shakes out in the transfer market. A lot of HS kids, who would have gone to a mid major program, are ending up at JCs, D11, and lower programs. That just adds to the transfer market the next year.

None of this is going away any time soon. It makes the 'player evaluation' portion of a programs recruiting that much harder. Now, to be on top of player evaluation, you had better keep track of all D1, D11, JC, and HS prospects and be ready to make contacts when and as things change.

One thing is for sure, there is a butt load of talent out there right now. Buckle up, it's going to get interesting. :thumb:
