Don't know what to make of this...

I've always liked Phen. Still will regardless of what he did this past week. It's over. The Griz won. But, in terms of leadership, I don't think, and have never seen, a Griz player behave like one of Phen's players did, RIGHT IN FRONT HIM. I don't think a UM player under Stitt, Delaney or Hauck would be flipping off, first the other team before kickoff, or the opposing crowd, while he's supposed to be lining up for the route he's about to run. No, I'm not saying flipping off the crowd is the worst offense in the world, actually I think flipping off the Griz as they ran onto the field before the game, with both hands, standing right next to Phen, was way worse then flipping the bird to a few heckling fans. But either way, I just can't see Griz players doing that right in Stitt's face, or Delaney's or Bobby's or Joe Glenns. To me, that is a reflection on leadership. I know Phen didn't condone what Dean did, but, to quote a line from Remember the Titans "Attitude Reflect Leadership, Captain."

Did Phen see these things?

Just because it has been happening for years doesnt mean its ok. I agree that if it was just once in the heat of the moment that would be one thing but he did it before the game started. In the clip on one of the posts it appearedd Phenecie was walking right at the spot but in his defense the angle is difficult to discern and it could have been in his blind spot. At the same time if the player was concerned about discipline from the coach I dont think he does it at all and certainly not that close to him. In any case I think the "bird" issue has been addressed to the degree it will be and we will have to see how ISU does going forward

Do you really think flipping the bird is a big flipping deal?

I find it interesting that some people think that football players and athletes of other visible sports are supposed to be choir boys.

Not from a classless player in a classless program.

This ain't hockey, you know.

Has nothing to do with choir boys but there should be some level of respect, class, dignity and honor when you are representing your University. Dont think that is too much to expect. Maybe you would be proud to have your kids act like that and think it is great. Hopefully you would be embarrassed. Dont know. Dont care.

Dime store psychology opinion here...the kid standing right next to the coach flipping the bird (before the game even started) tells me that was the message he had been hearing all week from the coach, in explicit and implicit ways.

Agreed

It was a puss move. He knew he was "safe" down on the field....lets see if he has the balls to flip off a few Butte guys outside a bar to see what happens.

Well ... maybe he has some teeth that hurt real bad, and figures this would be an cheap way to have them removed.

Then, in the ensuing wuss lawyer, he could make someone else pay to have them fixed  .

I know ... too creative ... but I could not resist.

I think Phen/Troxel et al are going to keep bringing ISU back up towards the top part of the conference. You can call it a classless program all you want, but that doesn't make it true. Many egriz types did that with EWU for years, and some still do, but the fact remains that EWU has kicked UM's butt for way too many years. I think talk like that makes the UM fan base, or the internet part of it, look stupid.

Honor representing the school? Honor? Really? I've made many previous comments about what I think of the view that athletes need to be choir boys to play for their school. It makes me laugh. I wouldn't be excited about one of my kids doing what this kid did, and I don't condone what the kid did, but, again, I really don't think it is a big deal and I wouldn't think it was a big deal if my kid did it either.

You could be right but I dont recall ever thinking Baldwin was behaving like Phenicie did this week. Never doubted Baldwins ability to advance his team. Seemed like smart professional coach and I can see why he was successful. Again Phenicie may have just had a bad week.

Absolutely feel the players should be honored to represent the school. End of story

This was just a generalized observation about any player on any team, not specific to ISU. Whether it becomes specific to ISU depends on how the HC reacts and deals with the player and whether it is repeated in the near future by that player or his teammates. I fail to see what the win-loss record of any team overall or a against any particular team has to do with whether the conduct displayed is classless or not.

I flip the bird 2-3 times a day in DFW traffic.
