Done watching Griz games

Yea I was bummed at the loss to the BIGGEST rival but walking out of the stadium I ran into an old friend from work who had not seen in a very long time & everything about the Griz loss just melted away. We chatted for about 1 minute but I will tell you it just made my day seeing him again! Life is short folks - live it to the best of your abilities!
 
I am a Griz fan, prior to this game with no real animosity for the Cats. Watching on TV, I was put off by what I saw as an air of assumed superiority in the Bobcat team itself, not present in the Mellott years, and that I regard as "Gallatin" and out of place in the UM stadium. I regard sidelining after touchdowns as suspect, especially when it involves donning a costume, and especially when that costume is a cowboy hat. Brings to mind all hat no cattle. Maybe what others see as winning culture at MSU, I have come to regard, after this game, as BobCorp. Go Griz.

Fandom is a funny thing. I really have no interest in the games where we are playing clearly out-matched opponents, like Portland state. And watching us get scared by teams that we SHOULD handle easily is just frustrating.

That’s why I’m in favor of moving up/on from the big sky. I think we would stack up really well against most if not all of the Mountain west teams, how cool would it be to watch us take the league by storm and get a real buzz nationally? Absolutely nobody outside of our fanbase cares that we beat Eastern and Idaho state in close games this year, and real griz fans were frustrated by it. I think new opponents would catalyze our fanbase a bit, and my own fandom as well.

I would love to see better competition here, and the MW is a natural fit.

I do balk a little at the national buzz. We definitely get more exposure, but there seems to be a strong anti group of 5/6 buzz this year. Games/highlights get shown. Not discussed as much. JMU is what any of the top of the FCS could be. The big boys don’t want to see that. Too much $$$$.

Like most I’ve resigned to the fact that the money will need to separate the top 40-60 teams into their own playoff/league and when that second tier realigns and teams push for a playoff system, only then will it make sense to move up to where we were 30 years ago with competitive peers.

Also, did everyone see the buy in to the big sky for Utah Tech and SUU? Talk about eye opening.

Beating team's twice is simply untrue the Bigsky Champions beat both Davis and Idaho twice last year. It's not difficult for Elite programs.

As far as national buzz goes, I’m talking about what would happen if we start the season 6-0 with a win against Boise state? We would be in the discussion for a CFP berth. Only 10-15 years ago we were beating the likes of App State and JMU, now they are living in that reality, we could too.

We are only about $12-15 Million (per year) short to compete with Boise State.

Cost to move up:
  • NCAA Transition Fee: Increased from $5,000 to $5 million (effective immediately).
  • Scholarship Requirements: Must fund 210 scholarships across 16 sports, costing at least $6 million annually, plus increase football scholarships from 63 to 85.
  • Facility Upgrades: Past studies estimated $4.7 million upfront, plus $11–$16 million for stadium and athletic facility improvements (press box, suites, academic center, Title IX compliance).
  • Montana relies on only ~34% institutional support, much lower than schools like James Madison (>80%). This means less cushion for big jumps in spending.
  • Travel costs for all sports would rise significantly in an FBS conference like the Mountain West.
  • Revenue streams (TV deals, sponsorships) for mid-tier FBS schools are shrinking, especially with realignment uncertainty.
  • They’d need $20–$30 million more annually to sustain FBS-level operations.
  • The move only makes sense if:
    • They secure a stable FBS conference invite (e.g., Mountain West),
    • Boost media rights revenue, and
    • Expand facilities and scholarships quickly.

Without those, we risk becoming another UMass scenario—spending big but struggling competitively and financially.

With the BSC unbalanced season, and 4BSC games in 2027 at home 5 on the road, combined Haslam’s CFO scheduling 8 home games this year, why would you pay for season tickets going forward? Burn the golden goose and people are willing to play the dice. This year was a bad swing and miss - but who knows. The team is full of talent and has a good coaching staff. End of era or legendary run? Everything is on the line this year.

I didn’t think there were more cat fans than any other cat/Griz game. I could kinda hear the noise they were making from the NEZ but I don’t think it had any impact on the game.

I acknowledge that I am not well versed in the financials of the move up, however I do believe that our facilities are already in a place where we would fit into the the mountain west, and some of the finances that pay for the rise in costs come from media deals.

The Mountain West really doesn't generate great TV ratings outside of Boise State and even that is pretty slim compared to the Power 4. The G5 is going to be in trouble ratings wise in the next 5 years unless there is some split of conferences between the Power 4 and G5.

And statistically not true. Sample size in FCS is smaller than FBS with conference championships. But people for some reason still say this even though I believe the winner of the 1st game wins the 2nd game like 60% of the time. I’d imagine that number is higher when the winner of the 1st game won on the road before getting to host that same team at home the 2nd game.

Not to say you CAN’T win if we meet next month. I personally don’t think you will but I know if the tables were turned I’d be dying to get another crack at the griz in Missoula even if they just beat us in Bozeman

I remember looking into this a few weeks ago, and Bobby has faced the same team twice in one season 5 times:

2004 SHSU (lost @ SHSU, then won @ home in the playoffs)
2005 Cal Poly (won @ home, then lost @ home in the playoffs)
2008 Weber (lost @ Weber, then won @ home in the playoffs)
2019 Weber (won @ home, then lost @ Weber in the playoffs)
2021 EWU (lost @ EWU, then won @ home in the playoffs)

One take away could be that Bobby's teams always beat the team they lost to previously (and always lose to the team they previously beat), but the more accurate thing is that he is 5-1 at home in these games and 0-4 on the road.

If we end up playing in Bozeman in a few weeks, while I think that we aren't that much worse than you guys are and would certainly make it interesting, I am not very confident at all in our team's ability to win there.

Although I'm sure because I said SDSU is a bad team a couple times, we're gonna go 0-fer against them this year lmao

SDSU is finding their stride now…if they make it to Missoula it won’t be the same Jacks team that went on the mid-season slide
 
“I am so pissed that the Griz couldn’t beat the Bobcats after beating a bunch of crappy BSC teams” and “no way can they beat NDSU to win an NC” so the answer is move up to FBS? Seriously?
