DOLLA (Dominant Defensive Line and Linebacker Attitude)

i haven't seen much talk about this but I think it's worth it's own topic.

What we saw against Idaho and Weber was exactly this. With Weber we were up against an offense that wanted to dominate with TOP and had a high quality rushing game in that offense. They were basically shut down with that plan and forced to try and pass, probably more than they would have liked at the outset. It did not go well for them.

As I look at the Scats, I see a team that also would prefer to run the ball and their passing game, to say the least, leaves something to be desired. Is there anything in their offense that would lead those who have watched their games that would lead you to believe that they are more adept at their game plan than Weber is. I'm asking this seriously as I believe our DOLLA is real and doing a great job and if we are to be beat, it will be only by a team with a top-quality QB and passing game. Am I wrong?

Damnit! I thought this was about meeting for a beer at the dolla!

Offensive line gets a lot of kudos for the improvements... but what the defensive line has done in the last 4 games, as far as improvement, is quite amazing.

They’ll get to Rovig a few times. He likes to hold on to the ball. I’d guess they’ll ha e a game plan for him to get rid of it quickly, choach has already talked about the pressure and blitzes....

Can the corners take away the first quick option and make him look at his progressions? Key.

I'm thinking Gavin and Robby will have something to say about those dump-offs.
What on Offense do they do better than Weebs?

Watching the CSD game, it it clear the Cats like to crack back to seal the edges then run outside the B gap.. The Griz simply can’t let them set the edge that way. One way is to run blitz; penetrate into the backfield and cut off the angles. The Cats are like a triple option team without two of the options. The way you blow up the TO is to force the pitch early. In this case they need to force the runner to choose a gap early while being gap sound and then TACKLE. Having the best linebackers in FCS will make this all possible for the Griz.

I don’t think they do anything better on offense.

They have 2 outstanding athletes. can they play off of that and catch the grizzlies d being too aggressive?

Who knows...but, even if they burn this defense once or twice, it won’t be enough.

Well I posted this in the Weber scouting report thread and it bears repeating. We’ve only scored LESS than 30 once this season against FCS teams. And only three times less than 35. I’m gonna go out on a pretty sturdy limb and say we score at LEAST 30. Now, can the ‘Scats score 30 on OUR D?

It’s given up over 30 exactly once to an FCS squad. To Suck State.

Cats defense will be the best FCS defense we’ve faced statistically. I know, I know, they haven’t played anybody, but I think they’re pretty stout on defense. I could see this game turning into a defensive battle, which in my opinion plays into MSUs hands as they’re the better running team. Key to winning this game will be getting a quick lead and forcing MSU into a situation where they have to pass the ball.

Win on 1st down and get off the field on 3rd. Seems like lately they are using the tight end for conversions. Anderson seemed hobbled a bit after the Davis game so I don’t see him on offense as much as past. He will be somewhat situational like goal line and 3rd downs or when they are getting pounded. But the biggest thing is NO UNTIMELY STUPID PENALTIES,be assignment sound, good tackling, and execute the coaches game plan. This is ours if we want it more than them....

Go Griz!!

It’s not about what they do better, it’s about what they do that Weber doesn’t. MSU is a multiple rushing attack. MSU runs the edge, runs sweeps, runs counters, runs pulls and RPO. Weber pretty much ran the A and B gaps with little to no counter or misdirection game. We beat them at inside gap contain with stunts and run blitz. We won’t be able to do that vs MSU. Also MSU uses a much more efficient quick pass game. Weber likes to still go outside and challenge DBs which really didn’t result well for them in the scheme. MSU will give us many more looks running. we will need to be wide on D and will have to own the edges. This mean less shooting the gap and inside stunts and we don’t want to give and edge up. That being said...they still have Infanse and their LB to run the A-B gap hard. I think the cat line is not as physical as weebs, I also think their QB(s) is/are quicker to bail on a play but can make more happen with their feet. So we just have to read more with MSU than Weber

Thanks.
Also have to realize that we probably won't have the luxury of 2 botched snaps on punts.

I'm not worried about our D being disciplined, they have been all year. And we just need to get sticky hands Gubner a couple more INTs :D

So, when the Bobcats get into their Totem pole alignment, Do we get into a defensive totem pole alignment??? In order. Sims, Lewis, Olson, Robertson, and Hauck. Go Griz

I agree about the running schemes, MSU does more things out of different formations and schemes than Weber does. I'm not sure if that is by design or default. Not much point in going 4 wide when your QB couldn't hit sand if he fell off a camel.

Statistically MSU has a much less efficient passing game than Weber St; the Wildcats completed more passes for more yards at a higher percentage, and did so against much better competition that the Cats.

Their QB Rovig can throw a nice pass. He just has trouble doing it consistently (like twice or three times in a row). I don't worry about him but do expect they'll complete some long passes on our guys. Though he better do it early. As the game goes on our defense will start to put the hurt on him. Count on it.
