He sounds too intelligent to be the president at UM, he has his priorities in place. Why should the bar be lowered intead of raised for a game? He sounds like he is doing a good job of keeping academics a priority and if other departments can not keep up they should find people that can make it work, anything less is pure poppycock plain and simple.

The premise of the article sucks. President John Doe is not a sports guy. Well so what. Is he a biomedical research guy, education, humanities and physics guy all rolled into one? Doubtful.

Bad administrators manage things poorly. Chances are he's bungling other university departments, too.... like another president we know. It's just that athletics is what the public pays attention to.

Maybe this guy gets lucky when Harbaugh quits the 49ers in a rage and takes over UM's football program. Then this Pres can go back into the shadows where he belongs........

Don't know if Mark Schlissel can fix things at Michigan or not. One would think with his stops at Brown and Berkley, he can get Michigan back to where it was as one of the countries leading Research Universities. He actually should have an easier time than Engstrom They actually have academic standards at Michigan if they choose to apply them unlike the two Montana Schools.

Regarding the Article, does anyone know a Division 1 athlete that doesn't spend MORE than 20hr/week (especially during the season) devoted to their sport?

As far as an administrator, he was a dean at Berkeley and a provost at Brown.

Schlissel is clearly intelligent, but he has virtually no experience with big-time college athletics.
He was Dean of Biological Sciences at Berkeley. Not too many athletes show up in biology classes, even at Berkeley. (Except maybe survey classes.) And, while UC-Berkeley certainly has loyal fans -- they're no where near as fanatical as those at Michigan. So that position would have given him no idea of what big-time athletics is about. Being a a provost a Brown, in the Ivy League ... well, 'nuff said.
