Do we put either a LB or Strong Safety Spy on Adams?

You try and contain Adams (who doesn't look to run as much as people think) and you have one less defender in the secondary and that will burn you all game long...

Uh....he's your LEADING RUSHER, most yards, most attempts, and averaging almost 10 carries a game....he has more carries than every other QB in the conference with the exception of Suck State's Garrett Safron and Weber's Chipoletti (both of whom are probably running for their lives  ). The only team with more rushing attempts from their QB position is Cal Poly....and we all know what kind of offense THEY run.

True, but besides the OSU game, very few of those runs were by design. Take away the OSU game and he is averaging less than 9 carries a game and that includes sacks...

Christ, finally a football thread, not a name calling pissing contest. Thanks!!!
VA is a lot like Russell Wilson of the Seahawks, he will run when the opportunity presents itself which can be on any play at any given time. I'm sure in certain situations the Griz D will assign a spy to him, but I agree with Alpha that straight up is probably best since he can hurt you in so many ways. Even with that, he is nearly impossible to tackle in the open field one-on-one. OSU attempted the spy, but it really cost them dearly. I do remember on one play last year in the open field, he juked Tripp out of his shoes, which he does daily in practice against players whom he goes against the entire season. A lot of teams have had success blitzing on 2nd and 3rd downs (SHSU/Toledo) on 2nd and 3rd in long situations. I would also say keeping VA in the pocket and containing the edges is also paramount, but if it leaves the middle of the field open, he'll burn you there if he sees any kind of opening.
In all honesty, the Griz have a very similar QB in JJ, just ask yourself how would you stop him and it would be the same for VA. Two excellent QB's in an awesome venue. I was there in 2011 and I'll be there on Saturday.
Lastly, no smack from me just hardnosed football talk.

I was reading alittle about secondary spy packages. They are basically on the Qb's throwing arm side. I have never played secondary, but what are the reads for FS/SS on a QB like Adams? Is he a righty or lefty, and does that give Hermy or Tully the tough job?

What we need to put on Adams is HITS.

Let him heal on the ride back, but if he walks off that field we didnt do our job and probably lose the game. If we get 2 or 3 personal fouls so be it but hit him hard and often. On the sidelines and during slides, tag him anyway we cant risk not playing until the whistle and letting him get extra yards.

Well, well. I hear PSU may be looking for a new coach soon. You should apply.

Treat him like any other QB and play solid assignment football. We need to make him uncomfortable hit him often and deal with the flags if they happen.
AMEN. That's all that needs to be done

Fair assessment Talon. Adams is a threat and the Griz must contain him from breaking long runs. Though I think defending the pass (especially when he is scrambling) remains the priority. I suspect EWU will jump out to the early lead in this game. However, I'm confident the Montana defense will shut them down as the game goes on. When it's all done I suspect EWU, and Adams, will have plenty of yards just not many long TD's for their efforts. Hope the game lives up to its potential. Regardless, expect the Grizzlies to win an upset over your Eagles. Go Griz.

Containing VA and winning this game rests heavily on the shoulders of Ty Gregorak and that scares me. To make game changing plays we can't sit back in a vanilla scheme and watch VA pick us apart. It's time for Gregorak to get creative and win the coaching battle convincingly against an elite team. While I agree with ALPHA about playing sound, assignment football we need to scheme up some clever ways to bring pressure and time our blitzes correctly. I'm no Gregorak "hater" but his play calling and scheme makes me a bit nervous against a potent offense like EWU. This game is a huge opportunity for Ty and our D (DB's especially) to shake the label they earned last year, once and for all and I think they'll be up to the task. Griz 48 EWU 37

Agreed. I would personally feel a lot better with Breske on the sideline for this one.

I was being sincere, I enjoy someone wanting to talk footbal. That's why hate when context is not interpreted on blogs. As you can see throughout this entire thread, except now, I have been talking scheme football, and the assment of your' best player.

Only can assume it will be Tripp. While I am not a defensive guru, I would play the nickel on 2nd and 3rd downs. I would also play a safety at outside linebacker most of the time as well---or Lebsock can defend the pass pretty well. As shown by the NAU game, JPK needs to improve against defending the short pass...need to shore this up.

Since Van Ackeren is a hybrid of LB/Safety would he be the guy? However, he did not look that good against Poly.

I'd to see Van Ackeren get some more playin' time @ SS, but there's plenty of time for that opportunity in the offseason.

If the defensive scheme for this game isn't geared to contain Adams then the coaching staff didn't prepare.

This game is goin' to be a good test for Montana.

Brother, I had some major Van Ackeren love coming into the season. My love has dwindled, watching him in action. I understand he got slapped into being the Mike backup, which does not exactly fit his set of skills perfectly..but, give me some Lebsock. Kid sticks his nose into it..

Sidenote: Hermanson looked like a real safety last week. Looking forward to him sticking people again.
