I'm thinking about dumping Optimum because of their Horrible DVR and customer service, but is Direct any better??? Do you get a new DVR with them, or a used one that some kid might have puked all over???

Getting a new DVR will sell me, one that doesn't change the channel whenever it wants to etc...

Direct won't even tell me if I'll get the NFL games for free or not, so that's what is holding me from subscribing

We have directv. Love it. With our new subscription we received all brand new equipment including a the while home DVR box. New subscribers right now get a really good DVR called the Genie that records 5 shows at a time or something like that. Might not mean much to some people, but that would be really nice in our house. The included NFL package is free with some plans, just depends on the plan you get.

Ok, Thanks... I hate Wednesday when 3 shows I like are on at the same time, and I have to watch one online later ... Lets say 4 are recording, can you watch the 5th at the same time???

Had the same problem with my DVR, it was an OLD one. I took it in and they swapped it out for a brand new one. If they know you are going to leave because of a bad DVR they would possibly do the same. Not sure if you have them for internet or plan to drop that as well but ESPN3 is a nice new addition.

Can't beat DirectTV for NFL games (with Sunday Ticket), that's for sure.

Ah yes Directv, new customers treated like royalty......loyal costomers treated like $hit. Have to admit they have better programming/more channels than dish but the other night I counted over 25 infomercials being shown between channel 200-299. I wish somebody would come up with an alacarte package where you only pay for the channels you want to watch....got no use for oprah, halmark or logo etc.

I'll threaten Optimum with that... I'm not even spending a penny on gas taking it back... If they want my business, they will bring me a new DVR... That's how bad it is... It will fast forward or rewind when it wants as well, just posessed... I'm hoping for free Sunday Ticket next year, but that wouldn't be a deal breaker if I got functional equipment...

I can get 20,000 points at Mypoints.com if I order it by December 7 (About $100 in gas money)

Yeah, I only want maybe 10 channels... Networks, ESPN, Discovery, History, Root etc... I hate having to surf through the channels you are talking about

Directv is by far the best value for the money for sports fans. The best time to order DTV is before football season. They have the best picture quality, in my opinion. The only draw back is signal interruption now and then with really bad weather, but it does not happen very often.

DTV does tend to have great deals for new customers. IT is frustrating to not get deals even close to new customer deals for existing customers. If you want to save money on fees, I encourage learning how to use their website for PPV's and bill pay. Their customer referral program is sweet too.

Another FYI, keep your account in good standing all the time. Customers with good payment history will have a lot more fringe benefits and options available for promotions, and more importantly when you are considering canceling. There just is not much motivation for any company in any industry to keep bad paying customers, and good paying customers are a dime dozen. If you can manage your bills, you will absolutely love DTV.

Stay away from Dish, if you are heavy tv watcher, their channel line up for entry level and mid level packages sucks.

We switched from Dish (after 11 years) to DirecTV last month. I love Directv for sports! You are correct about DISH for entry and mid level. We got the top package because all the other one's suck. DISH does the same thing..good deals for new customers but long time customers couldn't get jack..even with a spotless payment history.

Direct gets you in the long run with cost and bad service. You will get packages for cheap for a year or 6 months be sure to cancel them or you pay the full cost. Trust me I have seen bulls jump 50-200 dollars a month. Just keep your eye open.

I'm a very satisfied Dish customer because I don't watch the NFL and have the "everything" package. Yeah it isn't cheap but their new Hopper/Joey system is pretty good. They have kept their pricing pretty stable over the last 12 years I have been a customer.

We have Dish, top-200 package + multi-sports pack, includes Big 10 net, Pac 12 net and a bunch of other regional sports channels. the only way we watch the NFL any more is on NFLRedZone, We are most interested in College football and College wrestling so we like it. Several years back we didnt have a DVR, called and told them we were going to change providers because we wanted a DVR, they upgraded our equipment for less than $50, then we got another free upgrade to our equipment when we added HD a couple of years ago.

Ok, I'm officially done with Optimum... Trying to watch the Falcons game, it plays 5 seconds over and over on the DVR... As far as the TV that doesn't have a DVR, it cuts out also... I have only been here a year, but I heard that Optimum bought out Bresnan, and ever since it's been crap...

Direct, here I am... Take my cashola

Felt I had to respond to a couple of posts here as I work in this field. First off to those who complain that new customer get great deals and long time customers treated like s***. Everybody gets something for free when they sign up. Everybody. If every "loyal" long time customer got something for free, your bills would be twice as much to recoup the cost. It is a business people, not a credit card rewards program. And if you are truly a long-time loyal customer, you will be eligible for highly discounted or free upgrades. However most who claim this are constantly late with their bill and call twice a month asking for something for free. And guess what.. they don't get it.

Another poster brought up a great point about an "A la Carte" system. Trust me when I say most if not all tv providers would jump at this. Why? because it is the programmers who force these ridiculous channels on us and in what packages they fall. For instance, Directv recently had a dispute with Viacom. Viacom forced direct to buy ALL of their channels including ones that nobody watches. So direct makes it back by making the consumer buy varying packages. Dish also recently had a dispute for similar reasons with AMC. AMC wanted Dish to buy all their crap channels in order for their customers to see Breaking Bad and Walking Dead.

Dish, Directv, Optimum etc.. would like nothing better than to have a la carte services. Their profit margins would actually increase and customer's bills would be lower because many of those useless channels we pay for would disappear and would not have to be paid for by both the customer and distributor.
