My starting five

cameron rundles pg- solid year last year should be all a force this year
Matt Martin 2 guard- much improved
Jordan Hasquet-3 wing- his game is suited for the face up and he has been working on his game will flourish as a 3
Kyle Sharp 4 post- he has gotten much bigger and he can shoot
Andrew Strait 5 man- this is his year will dominate inside and be MVP of league

The big freshmen and the new 3 man Watson will get serious run and could start at times but this squad will be able to score some serious amount of points. Defense may be suspect but this will cause matchup problems for other teams in league.

why didn't you just post this is the topic on starting 5's?

In response... cam at pg if phillips isn't there. Martin has to prove himself his senior year. I see tinks going w/ him bc of his experience but this isn't a sure thing. tinks didn't go his way much last year. jordo - in there for sure. Sharpie will be iffy. he's been inconsistent and was real close w/ austin swift. will be interesting to see how he reacts to austin's departure. strait will not be the mvp of the league. he's good but he can't carry a team. he lost a bit of confidence last year and had a lot of trouble beating double teams. also needs work on rebounding and ft shooting.

man, jdhog, i have to ask: did you see the griz play last year? did you notice how weak our perimiter defense was? how inconsistent martin has been throughout his career with his three-point shot, and how the verdict is still out as to whether he's a d-1 player or just a very good south dakota high school star? how kyle sharp has been mr. "foul-a-minute" his first two years?

our coaches go out and recruit to fill these deficiencies, succeed according to all reports, and you want to keep these guys on the bench?

i can tell you, your starting five is a recipe for disaster, another second or third place finish in the big sky. are you a buffalo bills fan?

okay, maybe i'm being too harsh in saying martin is not a d-1 player. but it's not unfair to say he shouldn't be starting.

martin's role should be as a sixth man, a guy who can come in, hit a three, light a spark.

While I am sure we will see this line up at some point, but if this is the Griz's starting line up, this will be the slowest of foot starting line up the Griz has fielded in 10-15 years. They would have a very hard time against quick/fast teams with good 3 point shooting teams.

I think right now Martin is the best option to start at the 2. He's polished, probably has an ax to grind and when he can shoot, he is just straight up deadly.

Graves is too young to start right away and Staudacher is a role player, not a starter. Elgin-Taylor probably could start but I am not going to jump on the JuCo transfer bandwagon yet because I remember EVERYBODY (fans, teammates and coaches alike) being incredibly high on Gus last year... and we all know how that turned out.

If I was to guess who starts the season opener, I am going with Rundle, Martin, Watson, Hasquet and Strait. Yes, I know I shot down JuCo transfers a paragraph before but I think the 3 spot may be the Griz's weakest position and Watson looks like the best player there. I, however, wouldn't be shocked if they bump Hasquet to the 3 and put Sharp at the 4.

But who really knows what the line-up will look like at the end of the year?

the freshmen big men just about have to play this year. post men: strait, hasquet, sharp, vanderjagt. and vj may be hurt. i see a lot of minutes for selvig and quale. hopefully by the tournament they'll be playing like sophomores.

Assuming he is on the team, I'd put my $ on Lloyd Phillips starting at the point and Cameron at the 2. There is a big part of your quick perimeter defense. Jordan H is a terrific player but could be at a defensive quickness disadvantage against some of the 3's in the league. On the other hand, how does a normal size wing stop Jordan's 3s? :twocents:

As for Hasquet, how does any sized Big Sky player stop him? Go small on him, he shoots over or posts up, draws fouls. Go Big you set picks for him or have him drive. I seen Jordan play in July, he has worked hard on ball handling, quickness, and driving!!!! Offensively he is a matchup nightmare!!! BTW, just in case you forgot, the kid is a nice passer too.
Strait and Rundles are givens. Growing pains for Rundles are over, he will do whatever is needed when asked, and man either Guard position well. Strait, will be improved from the line and from what I hear, is quicker offensively and defensively.

The rest of the rotation will depend on matchups. After seeing Phillips play, I want to see him get most of the PG minutes, at least defensively. Offensively, Phillips, Martin, and Rundles all can distribute and score. As for Staudacher and Graves, Staudacher can go 3 with a small lineup due to his strength when needed. Graves is very athletic and fearless to the hole. If we need defense and penetrating just get him on the floor. He also would be my 1st or 2nd choice defensively for on the ball pressure.

The front court can be interesting. The keys are Sharp staying healthy and out of foul trouble. He is very talented, but hard to count on him for more than 12 minutes per game, due to foul trouble. I too think he and Martin would be best suited for 1st 2 off the bench. Also Watson is supposed to be a well rounded player that does a little of everything. Offensively I expect him to be a huge step up from Mayes. Defensively, I have not seen him play yet, but hear he is very athletic too.

Between Vanderjagt, Qvale, and Selvig we need 2 of 3 to step up sooner than later. If not, our interior Defense struggles again. Teams go right at Strait, Hasquet and Sharp, draw fouls and take them out of the game for stretches, and tire them out.

Tinkle has to throw 2 of 3 into the fire and accept all early growing pains with them, in hopes of dividend come tourney time. If we want to dance in March we have to have inside defensive presence, and lessen the pressure on Hasquet and Strait. Question is, Who will it be?
