Did Mariani Just Announce his Retirement on FB?

There seems to be some confusion....

From Marc's FB Page: Playing on this team was one of the highlights of my football career. It ended too soon but the future couldn't be brighter. It was an honor to wear the Tennessee Titan jersey for another year! I can't thank Titan Nation enough. Love you guys!! Go Titans! Go Griz! Go Ponies!

Sounds like he doesn't figure he will get signed again next year

Or the Titans season ended too soon? *shrugs shoulders*
That's how I understood it, too.
My take also:

Seems like he's expressing optimism about next year for the team. If he saw a bright future just for himself apart from with the team, he'd most likely have said something about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the end of the road. He didn't have a very good year returning kicks this year statistically. Last year, he seemed to be coming into his own as a receiver, and then the Titans didn't utilize him this year in that capacity.

Certainly not a great year in returns, but not all that bad either. Just looked at the regular season stats and Marc was #8 in total KO return yards, with a decent yards per return. He was #12 in punt returns, again with a decent average per return. Puts him in the top quarter to a third across the league. But it's not clear that's good enough to keep him around. Does not look like he will ever get a chance to show what he might do as a receiver.

Money comes more heavily into play the longer he is in the league. if the team can sign an undrafted free agent who can serve capably as a kick returner, the team can save a few hundred thou by releasing a veteran player like MM.

Yep. As the veteran's minimum goes up, chances of guys like MM and Carps and Reynolds keeping their jobs goes down...unfortunately. Unless one becomes a Tru impact player (see what I did there? 8-) ) it's survival of the fittest (and cheapest)...

As it stands right now, Marc is at the base “Veteran Minimum Benefit” salary -- $760,000. Per the CBA, that number goes up to $775,000 (if they re-sign him). If they replace him with a rookie, they would pay only $465,000 at the minimum … a clear savings of $310,000.

If I’m properly interpreting the wording I found on the web, about the only thing going for Marc is that he has more than four years of experience in the league. That means the team only has to count him at $615,000 against the team salary cap if they keep him at the Minimum (with some complications on bonus, etc.). Sometimes those cap numbers mean as much as, or more than, the actual salary outlay.

Who do you guys think will be playing next year?
Tru yes
coyle yes
Tripp maybe
Carps no
Colt no
Mariani no
Reynolds no
Strictly guesses on my part. Lets hear your take.

All great Griz and all men that represented the state and university very well

All the talk in Nashville on sports radio is that Mariani isn't electric enough. He is dependable (i.e. doesn't fumble) but everyone thinks that they will go with someone new next year. He got the job done though for this year on a team that improved by 6 wins. The Titans will look to upgrade at WR and CB this upcoming off-season, which presumably would mean a new young returner. I hate for him to leave but this may be the end of the road unfortunately, at least with the Titans.

I tend to agree with you on most all of those, especially with new coaches for the Bills and Rams. I would hope Holmes would keep on with the Browns as well.
