The highlight - and probably the only interesting part - of the evening was an excellent Power Point presentation by a Professor Bridges talking about the impressive work being done in the Chemistry Department. As for Pres. Engstrom, he ran off a litany of awards presented to UM undergrads before acknowledging that the school (paraphrasing) "has had some problems over the last few months", but that stringent controls have been put into place to ensure no repeats, blah, blah, blah. He mentioned how great Griz athletics are and all about the school winning the Big Sky Golden Goose -or whatever the hell the conference all-sports trophy is called. Most notable was his impassioned plea that we all go forth and tell the world what a great university we have at the Missoula campus. Otherwise, his 25 minute spiel was pretty tepid with no direct reference or inference to any of the fired and/or disrespected by name.
He was only a marginal mingler, my having seen him in engaged in conversation with only a relatively small number of the 100 or so people in attendance. Twenty-five of them - or literally a quarter of those gathered - were members of the UM Alumni Board in town for meetings. From the 37th floor of the Denver Hyatt the hazy view of smoke from the High Park fire drifting south was more interesting than most of the obligatory small talk. After a stiff drink at home I downed a pair of watery $7.00 G&T's, and while deciding the environment wasn't really conducive to engaging in dialogue with Engstrom I did seek out Mrs E who seems like a nice lady and welcomed her to Denver... Frankly Professor Bridges saved the evening.
