Derek Selvig

Well-known member
Derek Selvig was invited to a very high profile camp in Texas last week end called The Texas Elite Camp . Derek was one of only a few non-Texans invited to the camp. I am hearing rumors that Texas Tech has moved ahead of Utah State as the favorite for his services. These rumors are all from out side the state of Montana sources ,so who knows, the Selvig family is holding their cards very close to their chest.

The Texas Elite camp Thursday and Friday not only attracted the top talent in the state of Texas, but some of the nation's elite prospects.........

........The Texas Elite camp also attracted 6-9 wing Derek Selvig out of the state of Montana. Selvig plays for his father at Dawson County High and it shows with his understanding of the game. Selvig can shoot the ball from deep and puts the ball on the floor with ease. Lack of physical maturity and strength keeps him from finishing off the bounce at times. Selvig is good passer from the wing position and showed accuracy on any passes of length down the floor..........

Last summer, as the UM coaches were going to recruit Selvig, they were told that they had just missed Knight, who had been up there "hunting", and happened to stop in and see him.

His (Knight's) daughter-in-law is from Ophiem. Same town as Criswell's fiance. Knight's hunted up there for many years.

justified or not, i think recruiters see the aura of adam morrison emanating from young mr. selvig--tall white kid, evident skills, born in montana. just a hunch. he should grow a mustache immediately.

I have heard people say that Selvig could be the next Addam Morrison out of the North West. Even Morrison JR. The thing is Morrison is was and always has been a shoot the ball first and pass second (actually shoot 1st 2nd and 3rd might be closer). That was his MO in high school, college and will be in the pro's.. Selvig is a pass first and shoot 2nd type player. Selvig is also a pretty solid defender at the wing and point, Morrison could not defend my 6 year old daughter in the post.
I think Sevig would be better off in a program where he is not counted on to be the "big star", but the second option and distributing the ball and punishing cheating defences. Selvig is the type of player that makes other players around him better, but I have never heard of him taking over a big game.

i'm sorta surprised to hear that "texas tech has moved ahead of utah state" for his services. i mean, here's a kid whose dad played for the griz, and whose uncle not only played played for the griz as well but is one of the school's greatest coaches. not only that, the top two griz men's coaches are not only legendary players in their own right, but each is six-ten and knows a thing or two about coaching big players. and on top of THAT, i can think of no worse fate that being consigned to lubbock, texas to play for bobby knight, or being stuck in logan, utah playing for anybody! all in all, i'd expect the griz to have better odds at signing him than are being posted here by an expert tout who just happens to be a...bobcat...or does my skepticism runneth over?

Again remember that most of my info is coming from out of state national recruiting guy's. Doug is keeping a very tight lip from what I hear on who is recruiting and how hard. I have actually talked to a couple people who know Doug and when they have asked him the best they could get is generality "a lot of people" or "we will see" I talked with the Scout.com head west coast high school recruiting guy, and he thinks Selvig's ultimate position will be power forward. That told me a lot about how very little he knows about Selvig.

ASU Catches the Interest of Montana Forward Derek Selvig

By: DevilsDigest.com

Date: Jun 13, 2006

Both parents of Derek Selvig played for the University of Montana. Nevertheless, the Dawson County standout from Glendive doesn’t rule leaving his home state to go to college. The maroon and gold are one program he’s taking a serious look at.

“ASU has been recruiting me for a month now,” said Derek Selvig. “I’m very impressed with how the coaches run things and their style of basketball. Coach Phelps is recruiting me, and came to see me here in Montana last month after they saw me playing with my AAU club in Houston.”

Nevada, Montana, Utah State, Colorado State and Princeton have all offered the forward scholarships. When we caught up with Selvig he was actually on his way back from an Iowa State camp, and mentioned the Cyclones as another suitor of his. In reality, there’s no school too far or too close to his liking.” The Montana campus isn’t close to home,” he explained. “It’s more like a nine hour drive (laughs). I’m definitely keeping my options open and checking out schools all over.”

The 6-10 195 Selvig sees himself as a forward more than a center, and acknowledged the fact that he will need to bulk up during his senior season. “Getting stronger is the biggest thing I need to do to play at the next level,” he admitted. “Shooting and passing are my strong points, and I need to improve my post-up game.”

While the Sun Devils haven’t offered yet, Selvig believes it’s a matter of when, not if. “I think an offer from Arizona State is gonna come soon,” he remarked. “I’d like to take a visit down there, and see how things go once I’m there. I don’t know if I’ll visit this month or in August. It will be harder to visit in August, because that’s when we start football practice.”

No we didn’t misquote him, he did say football practice and you’ll never believe what position Selvig plays: “I play quarterback,” he said. “My height helps, because I don’t get too many balls batted down (laughs).”

Much like football, his ability to lob balls over opponents outreached arms is a good quality to have in basketball as well…

He's going to have many options it sounds like. Will tradition and closeness to friends and relatives to see games beat out playing better competition? I think he'll play for the Griz.

Ronbo,

I hope you feeling is true. If anyone can sell him on being a Griz I would think Larry K. has the best chance.

No way he goes to UM. Hope he does, but who's going to give up the oppurtunity to play against teams like Kansas, Texas, and Ok St. among others every night, not to mention the preseason schedule they play. And to compare him to Morrison is ridiculous. First of all, Derek doesn't have nearly the same skill set as Morrison did at the same age. I saw Adam play multiple times in high school, and have seen Derek play as well, and trust me, there is no one as competitive. He just wants to beat his opponents brains out every game, no matter who it is. It seemed like every big game, whether playoff or a regular season game against a good team, Morrison always had 35-45 and his team always won. Mead didn't lose a game his senior year until the state title game, where he and Aaron brooks both went for 40, and Morrison was extremely sick from low blood sugar. Please don't ever compare Derek Selvig to Adam Morrison .
