Name one montana kid that stayed here over a Major Conference OFFER?

In no particular order:

Mike Chavez
Shann Ferch (although he left when his brother left)
Nick Dissly (U of Wash for football)
Jeff Epperly
Larry Krystowiak (Larry was rated as one of the top 3 power forwards in the west by the end of his senior year)

Just off the top of my head

The Griz seem to stand a chance with Selvig with family ties involved, that's the only reason. I hope he does, he's obviously a real talent. It will be interesting to see what happens now the big schools will put the full court press on him as MsslaCat previously mentioned.
Interesting:

What Big Conference Schools offerred Chavez and Epperly?

I watched almost all of Krysko's games and was not aware that he was offered from bigger schools.

Dissly was never going to play football because he wasn't tough enough and we were talking basketball anyway.

I'm friends with Ferch and I do believe you are wrong on this one. He ended up getting bigger offers, but not out of high school.

The Griz seem to have a chance with Selvig as the family ties are strong. It would be a tremendous coup for Tinkle in my view. AS MsslaCat previously stated, it will be interesting to see what happens now as the Big Dogs look to put on the full court press.

I don't know if I can agree with you on this one, 'Mslacat.' At least on considering Larry Krystkowiak as one of the top three PW in the west by the end of his senior year. Was this while he was in high school? Maybe while he was a senior in the Big Sky perhaps. I watched just about every home game back in the early eighties when L. K. started playing under Mike Montgomery & his first year with the Griz wasn't what one would call all-inspiring & certainly NOT an accurate prelude of what was to come. He came in listed at about 6'7 3/4" & about 195 lbs. Played sparingly, if at all, & when he did play his freshman year he ran down the court towards setting up his defense slumped over looking at the floor & not the players; somewhat lacking in confidence & appearing as if he was in the wrong place. I couldn't really believe the hype but I was hoping that he would develop; something more than just a bucket or two per game, like he may have done from Shelby then subsequently transferring to Missoula Sentinel for his senior year.

Well, by the time his sophomore year came around he was listed at 6-9" & 235 lbs. The rest is history.

IN FACT, there wasn't really 'that' much hype at all, other than he was a local Montana kid & the Griz 'did' give him a schollie. I never heard of anyone else even bothering to sign him, yet alone any college out of state. I thought it was a charity case at the time myself; especially after seeing L.K. play in his first few games as a freshman.

Top three PF's in the west? Not even the top 100. not at that time.

I can pull a copy of Street and Smith college basketball year book from the year Krysco would have been a true freshman. In that issue they lhad a section "Where they are going" It listed the top 20 players in the country and where they were going. Then they broke it down to East, south, west and Northeast players. The west had the fewest players listed, but Larry K. to Montana was on the best of the west list. There were only 3 other power forwards listed on the best of the west list, Larry was one of those three. I have bought and read every Smith and Street basketball annual since 1979. Larry is the only male Montana player to make the "Were did they go" section in that time.

i'm with mslacat on this one. i recall vividly krystkowiak showing up in the "where they're going" section of street & smith, because it was seldom a montana recruit ever made that list.

too, i saw krysko play as a true freshman in a non-conference game at pacific, and my memory is not that of a player who showed little promise. i believe he got about nine points off the bench, was a force underneath, and i came away very impressed with his potential. the only other time i was as impressed with a freshman player was when derrick pope played for the griz in a pre-season game against san jose state in the musty old san jose civic auditorium. i remember wondering, how the hell did the griz ever get THIS kid.

Played sparingly, if at all, & when he did play his freshman year he ran down the court towards setting up his defense slumped over looking at the floor & not the players; somewhat lacking in confidence & appearing as if he was in the wrong place.

Wasn't LK voted the BSC Newcomer of the Year his freshman year? I seem to recall that.

i was a little young then, but i did some googling, and he averaged only 4.9 ppg his freshman year so newcomer of the year seems a stretch. he then exploded to 18 a game, 21 a game and 22 a game his senior year.

I didn't even know that there was a 'Big Sky High School' at the time, I made an assumption,' granted, that L. Krystkowiak went to Sentinel from Shelby because Big Sky was either non existent at the time or was just in the process of being built. I heard of him vaguely but that was about it. Was there even a Reserve Street at the time? I have a state map from the early fifties & the population of Missoula was like about 20,000. The early eighties, this was at the time of Larry Donovan's billboard at 'Disfunction Juntion' citing 'Grizzlies, the team of the eighties,' wasn't it?

Recalling the general temper around Missoula at the time Doug Selvig in the preceeding year was considered a more heralded recruit than L. K.

Even the Media Guide, page 57, doesn't even have it right when it says Derrick Pope was Big Sky MVP in the year 1983-84 (his senior year was 1982-83) & L.K. was MVP 1986-87 (his senior year was 1985-86).

You may have your Street & Smiths back to 1979, I recall seeing them around from the early sixties, at least when it came to the NFL; but even as a PF I seem to recall that L. K. played center & not a forward position; not until he came to UM.

I still wasn't that impressed by his play & for someone just coming out of HS, Willie Weeks' brother John Weeks at Wolf Point could easily be considered a better player comparatively. L.K. certainly wasn't as good, IMO, as Ray Howard or Jack Gillespie when they were in high school for the Great Falls Bison in the early to mid-sixties.

All I recall him doing when it came to scoring was getting rebounds & making lay-ups. I guess it's hard to do any accurate scouting of high school talent when one is sitting behind a typewriter all day working for some magazine & just going by newspaper box scores. I don't even recall that the Bobcats were even interested in L.K. at the time.

Well, that's what I recall from about twenty-five years ago.

I was young when Krysko was playing at BSH, he was involved in the best HS game I ever saw.

Sentinel wins the game but Krysko nets 32 and Scott Persia (Scott Moe was sick that night) from Sentinel netted 33.

Just to try to get this back on topic:

Q & A with 6-9 Derek Selvig

Derek Selvig By: Tracy Pierson

Date: Jul 12, 2006

Derek Selvig is a skilled 6-9 forward from a small town in Montana who is, after being relativley unknown, now getting some attention from college programs, including one from the Pac-10. He does have some connections with the University of Montana, however...

Derek Selvig, the 6-9 forward from Glendive (Mont.) Dawson County, has to be one of the biggest sleepers in the country.
Selvig was virtually unknown until he played in some AAU events in April. He quickly got the attention of scouts and college coaches, with the skills of a wing in a legit 6-9 frame.

That led to Selvig being invited to the Reebok ABCD Camp, where he more than held his own last week. He showed his skill level, being able to handle the ball, and having a very good passing ability to go along with a very good outside jumper. His versatility in being able to guard a three, four or five really makes Selvig a valuable commodity.

While some colleges are starting to get the clue on Selvig, he has a long-time relationship with the local school, Montana, that could be tough to beat.

So how has the ABCD Camp been?

“It’s been really fun. The The competition has been real high. I played Kevin Love’s team, and he’s one of the best players in the country. It was really exciting matching up against him.”

How do you think you did?

“He has me by about 50 pounds. He’s very quick for his size. You can’t stop him. You can only try to contain him. But I think I did pretty well. I focused on the defensive end. I wanted to beat him to the block. And then on offense I tried to take him outside to try to get our guards to drive in so he wouldn’t be down there. But he’s real quick and can beat you to the basket, just about anytime he wants.”

How has the experience been, coming from the competition in Montana?

“Yeah, there isn’t much competition in Montana like this. I felt I held my own most of the time.”

You played in the state championship last year?

“We lost in the semi-finals the last two years. We took third last year.”

What’s the next tallest guy in Montana you’ve played against?

“There have been some 6-10 guys. There was a 6-10 guy last year in state. But there aren’t many of them.”

Tell me your relationship with the University of Montana?

“Both my parents played at the University of Montana, and my uncle (Robin Selvig) is the women’s head coach there.”

What other schools are recruiting you?

“Right now, the schools recruiting me the hardest are Arizona State, Utah State, Nevada, and Montana.”

Who’s offered you a scholarship?

“Nevada, Utah State, Montana, and Northern Iowa.”

Any other west coast schools?

“Gonzaga wanted me to come out to their camp and I went out there this year. A lot of Pac-10 schools have sent me stuff in the mail. I haven’t seen that much interest from them, other than Arizona State.”

Do you think you want to leave the state?

“I’m leaning toward Montana right now. I like the place. There’s a player from North Dakota who’s 6-11, Brian Qvale, who I want to go to school with. He’s looking at the same places I am pretty much, including Montana.”

Going to Montana, though, it’s not exactly local for you, living in Glendive, right? “Yeah, it’s about eight or nine hours by car.”

You think you could commit quickly or will you take your time in deciding? “I’m leaning toward Montana right now, but if something changes, I might think about it. I want to commit, maybe during the football season.”

And that’s when you’ll be playing quarterback?

“Yes.”

How’d you do last season at quarterback?

“ I split time with another quarterback but I threw five touchdowns. I see the field pretty well, obviously. I just have to get rid of the ball.”

What kind of student are you?

“Good. I have a 3.0 GPA right now and scored a 20 on the ACT

That's encouraging news. It's also good that he wants to sign during football season, so he can't attract any more attention during the BBall season.

Just throwing this out there.

3 - Selvig
4 - Hasquet
5 - Vanderjagt

If we sign BOTH Selvig and Qvale we will be set for years to come... :thumb:

Selvig would be a once in 5-10 year type of signie. Not to knock him, but Qvale is nice, solid, recruit, but the Griz are recruiting right now a few big men of equal or more talent.

i have a theory, that in any competition we tend to overstate the opponent's edge while overlooking our own. let me just say this: i'd hate to be the school--any school--competing against montana for derek selvig.

You can not overstate how big a signing Selvig would be for the Griz. And the N. Dakota kind along with our recent recruits and Montana basketball is absolutely back full time! Great news.

There are NO Guarantees, remember the Freshmen year Gary Kane had? He was incredible, lit it up against UNLV, got a triple hernia, was never the same. That is how fast things can go south. That being said, love to have those guys become Griz.
