Derek Selvig: Help or Hindrance?

Couldn't believe it when I saw the header on this thread, and then I saw that David2 had struck again under his grizzoola alias ... and I understood the know-about-nothing had struck again.

grizonbob had it square on:

"I think the league's coaches are better at assessing Selvig's talents than myself or other yahoos here on this board." The other eight coaches in the league chose Selvig as second team. Nuff said.

Is there no sense of embarrassment in such inane postings as the starter of this thread?

To paraphrase someone more original than me: Better to NOT post and be thought a fool, than to write and remove all doubt.

Dude, chill out. You don't have to agree with his point-of-view, but he has a right to his opinion, and also has a right to start a thread expressing his opinion.

That's true, and others have a "write" to express their opinion of that opinion, or make fun of pictures, for that matter. Sail on!

Whatever turns you on, dude. It's your world.... we just play in it.

IMO the biggest problem with Selvig is the BSC officials at times appear to call offensive fouls on him for being taller than the other players, which limits his playing time and ability to get into the flow of the game. If the Griz make the NCAA tournament I don't think this will be a problem. Also it would help if he remembers to hold the ball up high and not at his waist when he is inside, but if his playing time is not limited by fouls he usually has a pretty good game.

DS is hands down my pick for 7 foot point forward of the year in the Big Sky! :thumb:

Go Griz!

Maul'em!

You two need to keep your hands to yourselves...

DS is not comfortable trying to carry a team. Remember that Glendive did not win the Class A state title his senior year. He is a role player. Tinks obviously, and properly, gave up trying to turn him into a back-to-the-basket post player a long time ago because it's simply not his game. He is not comfortable around the basket, probably because he jumps neither well nor quickly, and tends to get his shot blocked by shorter players. Letting him roam the perimeter and pass off when he gets backed down into the post makes the most of his talents on offense. It tends to limit his effectiveness as an offensive rebounder, but on balance the Griz are better offensively when he is in the game.

Defensively, he makes the middle pretty inaccessible to the other team, and he can be a rebounding machine when he wants to be. He helps the team much more defensively than he does on offense.

Just sayin.

Selvig's great when hitting three pointers, being the assist guy, getting rebounds, or blocking shots! Otherwise, he's totally treated like crap by most on this thread. He works his ass off! Watch him during the the Big Sky tourney, and give him a friggin' break!

Derek is definitely valuable to the Griz. It seems like his bashers over-exaggerate the parts of his game that aren't his best and conveniently ignore the good aspects of his game. I can understand why people get frustrated because he's just not very physically strong and sometimes that makes him look like he's playing weak. I think he'd also perform better if he'd just forget about the refs calls/non-calls and just keep working hard. When he complains about it too much he seems to lose his intensity at times. I can remember several games though that the Griz would have lost had he not been in the game.

I like Derek--my hometown is in his neck of the woods, which is really nice for a Grizz fan. But to the point above--I've often wondered why Derek didn't get on a strength program a long time ago?! I'm not saying he could change his skinny body type, but he could definitely stand to put on lean muscle, which could and should significantly increase his power and jumping. I say this as an ectomorph like Derek who could barely bench the bar my freshman year in college, but who put on some nice muscle with a year or so of moderate gym time. I just don't get it--if you're from a basketball family, have a good shot, and stand 7 feet, I'd think you'd want to maximize your physical ability so you'd have a shot at the Big Time. And to those who say getting stronger messes up your shot, I just don't agree--modern training allows for flexibility maintenance (or even improvement!) as you get stronger.

I think his being injured a good portion of every year of his career has had quite a bit to do with his inability to bulk up. I am just guessing at that, but it seems possible.

You're probably right about the injuries getting in the way of his development, but it's kind of a chicken-or-the-egg situation: he maybe would've been injured less had he judiciously worked on his musculature earlier on. I'm looking at this with hindsight, but also thinking that if he ever wants to make a splash in pro ball, even in say Kosovo, he's going to need about 20 extra pounds of muscle mass with the extra spring and strength it would afford. Not saying he's going to or should become a post player!--but he wouldn't get pushed around/injured as much, and would have a more consistent and energetic presence on the court.

Go watch the Lady Griz, it's more your speed. I hear you like to watch the pretty panties run......

His undies need re-arranging,
Caused by frequent changing
He is dense and dull
While his Depends stay full.
Being owned by he who growls
Seemingly does not effect his bowels.
As he spews his rancid verbiage
To compensate for his shrinkage, alas,
His unit is so small, if he has one at all,
But a microscope can always make that call.

for Montana to develop the kinds of players the game demands now depends upon earlier development and not DNA. Youth programs, intense, like they have in SoCal and the large cities develop the Cherrys and Lillards. But, Montana is a cold weather state without a real passion for the game, though the Reservations are the closest thing to urban life in that regard. It takes skills developed over time...and well coached along the ways...often times that takes money and travel to camps...how many kids in Mt can do that? Or, any small state far from major markets? it could happen.. i remember how strong the CYO programs were in Butte and Anaconda, and the public schools that fed into the Butte Hi and Central teams that dominated the state more often than not...the system was in place, like AAU swimming....It could happen again. Until then, it will pure size of player and his heart, and that is simply not enough anymore.

Montana does produce some very good players from time to time but they often leave the state for "brighter lights". Riley from Corvallis is this years example. The Griz have been talking to him and his family for years and he was all set to become a Griz until this past year when Utah grabbed him. But yes, he did spend the summer in leagues outside Montana and that's were the bigger programs saw him play.

How is he doing down there? Is he getting any PT?

Senior this year. Lost out in a challenge game Monday night. Tough deal. A high school student from Corvallis was killed Monday morning in a car accident on the way to school. I am surprised they played the game.
