becoming a problem. reader out, jamaar hurt. we're down to seven productive players. qvale is foul-prone, cherry needs a breather, selvig remains inconsistent. tink's a great recruiter but adams, wood and hutchison are busts so far. can any emerge? contribute...anything? therein may lie the key to the season.

Jamar will be back in two weeks. Autry will emerge, hopefully.

Wood is a total bust, Tinks should have ditched him for Autry before the conference started.

It's a young team and it's damn near impossible to recruit to this conference, there are only so many Qvales and Straits to go around out west. Further, the refs in conference try their damnedest to make Q a non factor in our games. But, this is what the idiots that love the Obese Sky wanted.

We do need help off the bench, but like I said, it's the Big Sky, no team is going to be able to recruit 2 Cherry's, 2 AJ's, 2 Jamars, 2 Selvigs, a Criswell, a Strait and a Quavle to all be on the same team at the same time. I do question the choice to get two guards instead of another big, weird decision, but the kids that are coming in can score, and that's what we need more than anything.

We had the chance to get into a better conference that attracts higher caliber recruits and we botched it.
Tinkle can't really be doing any better with what he has to work with, Hutchenson and Reader were the absolute best we could get at the time, it's not like we missed out on anyone there, better players went to play for programs that are in better conferences.

I am eating more than enough crow regarding Wood. I really thought he was going to be a solid 10-12 ppg and 4-5 assists kind of guy. Now he has been reduced to coming off the bench, and played 4 minutes against ballsac U. Hopefully this ignites a fire under JW's ass and he can come off the bench, stay out of foul trouble and is able to contribute. We need it.

Jamar will be back soon, and hopefully Reader's ankle heals quickly. Reader may be a work in progress, but the one thing I love about his game is that he is fearless under the hoop. The last big man we had that was agressive and fearless under the rim was Strait. And AS got to prove him self early because he was all we had his frosh year unlike Qvale/Reader. Sorry, but when Qvale was a frosh, sophomore, junior, and even occasionaly now he has, and can be, very timid on the offensive end. Tinkle is the perfect coach for a guy like Billy Reader, and if he can bulk up and develop a touch, I think he can be a pretty damn good big man. In addition, Reader has the intensity that the team appears to feed off. That dude goes crazy when things are going in the correct direction. Good stuff

Also, I am eating alot of crow regarding Shawn Stocton. A few of you were right that he just doesnt turn the ball over. Smart kid. He had better be with his pedigree.

I agree that we may be seeing the emergence of V. Autry. He's a good team guy and plays with alot of intensity. Like Jamar, he shoots a better 3 ball that I expected.

Chase Adams.......ughhhhh. 1-2 minute kind of guy. From what I have seen, he is terrible handling the ball. In the 9 minutes he played, I saw UNC strip the ball from him twice with ease. CA was a late pickup anyway.

All in all, When Jamar and Reader are back, the Griz will obviously have thier depth back. At least were not in a Lillard situation.

Someone (mtgrizrule -?) posted yesterday that Reader would not be back this year. FWIW.

And a large thanks to you and Mtgriz for shedding the greatest news of the day......Effer that sucks. Is there an article? Or Did he find out from someone with inside info like PR?

Regarding Reader, I heard it through the grapevine from very good sources. Backer confirmed it here. Myself nor backer would jump the gun if we did not trust it. We will have to rely on Ward a lot more off the bench, and hope Hutchison develops, he is only a FR RS.

As for guard depth, it is beginning to look like Tinkle was concerned about 2 guard after we lost Lassisi (sp?). He did not know what we would get from Adams or Wood. Stockton will continue getting his minutes. Autry is playing solid in limited minutes. I hope Tinkle continues to develop at 12 to 20 minutes per game clip. He has the game, just not experience. I would guess, he is still taking the loss of his father hard too, and understandably so.

Jamars return will sure help a lot.

I still think (perhaps naively) that Wood can contribute to this team. Shooters don't just fall off the end of the earth like he apparently has. If (when?) he finds his shot again, I really like him coming off the bench. Shooters who drain a couple threes off the bench can really change momentum in games. I'm sure it's in his head right now, but if he finds his stroke, he can really help this team.

Wood turned down an open 3 against UNC. As Wood came to the bench, Tinkle politely told him "We need you to shoot those."

Bummer regarding Reader. For some reason you seem credible. :thumb:

I like Wards mid-range game. Its actually really good. However, Wards post up game may be the worst I have ever seen (At this level anyway). MAN, it can be awful, but he can get himself in decent position for easy putbacks, and can run the floor pretty well. He needs to stop posting dudes up. He definatly is no A. Strait (judging by size)

What are the regs (if any) regarding Reader receiving a MED-RS? He played but not too much. I know if a guy plays limited Minutes in football he can be considered for a Med RS

On another thread someone said if a player plays in less than 30% of the team games he is eligible for another year. Which in Reader's case, that may be true. He should be a beast as RS SR.

I clearly remember the opportunity he passed up. It was obvious that he got ready to shoot in rhythm, and then stopped as he started his motion and gave it up on a pass. Last year he would have cranked that thing, and turned around to go play D at the other end as soon as it left his hand, confident that it was going down. Need to find a way to get his confidence back, and the stroke will soon follow.

Strait really had 2 moves - a jump hook and a quick inside step - that allowed him to beat guys much bigger and more physical than himself. Ward should study film of Strait and learn those 2 moves, and he could be every bit as effective as Strait was. Ward may even be more athletic than Strait was, but needs to have the same confidence and aggressiveness AS had. And he has a great guy to practice against in BQ.

Strait was also very good at a good fake and step through, he beat Fazekas many times with that move. Strait was also very fluid. His moves seemed effortless. If he had size he would've been damn near unstoppable.
