Depth on Defense

The Griz coaches are doing an excellent job this year with the team. However, here is an observation I made last night. During that last scoring drive last night by App. State, the DTs and LBs for the Griz were visibly tired and wore out. How about playing Addison Owen at lb more and Trevor Rehm at DT more to build experience and allow starters to be more fresh at the end of games. The few plays Trevor Rehm played showed there is not much of a let down from the starters. Holmes played a lot and was a force getting into the offensive backfield often...the future is bright.

Granite, we are deep in our D Line and have some of the best players in recent times. We had the ball 9 min. longer than App St. We were not tired out. Our play was solid at the end of the game. Subs will be a big factor as we move down the road. I am looking forward to our D Line play and yes we are very strong all the way through!

Watched the game at Paradise Falls and several people noted we had some more arm tackling going on in the 4th quarter.

Yes, there were several plays where our initial contact on their RB came behind the los but they never got him wrapped up and he picked up valuable yardage. Of course I also saw ASU o-linemen with handfuls of white jerseys hindering our ability to get to the RB, but that wasn't the deciding factor in the loss.

Umista: I agree with most of your posts on here but have to respectfully disagree on this point. Please watch again that last series where Appy scored. Notable was the arm tackling and missed tackles...this was a sign a fatigue in my mind. I don't know where one finds playing time minutes but Takai and Biennman(sp) played a very high percentage of the game along with JK. Yes they are needed in the game, but my point was they could have been a little more fresh for the last series.

The arm tackling makes me recall two other games where the Griz started arm tackling and couldn't stop the run. Villanova in 2009 and UMass in 2006. My HS basketball coach always told us players will start to play defense with their hands and arms instead of staying in defense stance and moving their feet once fatigue sets in. If was fatigue I don't think it was due to not playing 100%.

KurtM, I will watch the game again and again. Perhaps I missed it. I will let you know my thoughts afterwards.

I agree with you grizfnz...but Growler1 said we are not supposed to talk about the referees' job. That play when JH hurt his knew, both Takai and Stuberg were held...lots of white jersey being grabbed. I was watching the that play several times to see what happened to JH. App State did a good job at not being caught though...and the better team one. We will see about later though this year and next fall with the rematch. That Sam Houston game in TX several years ago was a good learning experience and look what happened in the playoffs.
