Depression over Vandal Football

You should stay in the Sunbelt then! The BSC will feast on you! You're 2-5 CONFERENCE and 3-8 O A in a weak Sunbelt conference what's to be proud of??? You barely beat Bozeman last year and are 8TH in a very weak FBS conference... A conference made up of primarily FCS teams... The BSC isn't thrilled about you as a member pal!! Some administrators somewhere thought it would work on paper... But all I see is a cellar-dwellar from the SBC screwing up our schedule!!! Oh well a D-I win is a D-I win. We'll take it.Nobody else will play us at WGS because we win WIN 90% OF OUR HOME GAMES...!!!

I'm very excited to have them back, it's not every year you get a long-lost rival back into the fold. And many of their fans are going to be too proud or stubborn to come crawling back, but a lot of Vandal fans seem like pretty cool guys who are happy to be playing EWU, UM and MSU

From Vandal forum: "Nobody but nobody south of Grangeville gives a crap about Montana or any of the other schools in the BSC."

Says the fan of a team that draws less than half the attendance as us to their home games.....against other FBS teams.

#irony

It is a good thing that the BSC allowed entry, or they would have ended up where they belong NAIA.

Just my opinion.

I have heard many Vandal fans say they would rather just drop football than join the BSC. I say, let them.

This thread is so depressing. We are looking at our last FBS game this Saturday....most likely another loss, and we're talking about which D-2 team we can fill our future schedules with. I'm headed right to the booze cabinet.
I understand why many of their fans are depressed. Idaho had the courage to move up, but were not successful. Now, they are moving back to a lower tier of competition. Failure in life is difficult.

Courage to move up? Narcissism and idiocy to move up. We have a few here that fit that label.

The tears continue to flow...

" But with no plan moving forward I don't see how we'll compete with the real top FCS schools"

That's an easy one. Eventually, the good teams like N Dakota State, Illinois State, Sam Houston and etc will go G5 just like superior FCS teams have in the past. I can envision a ridiculous scenario where the BSC, The Ivy League and the Patriot League will be the only established FCS conferences along with some new conferences made up of current DII and NAIA teams such as Eastern Oregon, Central Washington and the like.

This web site is a good example. With the decision to go FCS, participation on this site is MAYBE 10 % of what it once was. Back in the day when we'd win a game we'd have hundreds of posters and readers visit this (and pervious renditions of this) site. On signing day it'd have 1000's of visits. I'll be interested to see what signing day 2018 looks like.

And given Idaho's overall history at the D1AA level (including before Erickson) there is no reason to expect the program to be some juggernaut that makes the post season every year and wins 8+ games. Realistically you're still only going to see one truly good season every decade.

Forget FCS prominence, what are we doing to avoid being another Idaho State?

4-8 as an FBS school is pretty much equivalent to 6-5 as an FCS school. Either way there's no post season. Two more wins against worse competition in a lower tier of football ain't much to get excited about.

I don't envy the position the Vandals are in. They seem happy just to be at the big kid's table, even if they are only getting table scraps. I don't think any of us can pretend to know what they are going through.

But even in the early 2000s the Cats averaged over 11k a game, I mean come on. Don't sit there and say no one cares about FCS football when you wouldn't even crack the top 20 for attendance in the FCS.

Vandal fans seem to operate under the premise of any exposure is good exposure. The rare time Idaho goes bowling they get a little bit of national press. But most of the time, if they are in the news at all, it's for having another losing season or because they are trying to find a conference. They may have a slightly higher profile on a national stage, but I don't think they realize it's more of a laughing stock profile than anything else.

Those potato heads just want to see their name in print, it makes them seem like they matter. Pride goeth before the fall.

I had the "pleasure" of talking to a Vandal supporter a few weeks ago. He was in complete denial. He firmly believes:

1. This is a short term deal. They will be back up to BCS within a few years.
2 They will simply dominate the Big Sky, and FCS... He will be SHOCKED if they haven't won a national championship within 3 years.
3. The booster base will be so unhappy with this move, that they will all pony up the funds to get them back to the BCS.
4. The opposing teams will be intimidated coming into the Kibbie Dome. This is where I couldn't hold my laughter anymore.

Serious. I can't make this shit up. I kept waiting for him to start laughing to let me know he had a great sense of humor... Nope. Proceeded to get pretty pissed off when i started laughing. It was great.

#4. Are you kidding me, my brother went there back on the 90’s...must of changed, because I remember like 1000 fans for Idaho and 4000 Griz fans.

I'm going to admit something I don't tell many people, so keep it on the DL.

I am a U of I alum. Graduated from there in '88. Things MUST have changed, because in the mid-late '80's the Kibbie Dome was rockin'....Idaho was good, and they filled the dome. I know, because my job (while attached to the Navy ROTC unit) was to clean up the dome after football games.

Idaho had no business moving up. They went up because Boise went up...same thing would happen to Bozo if we moved up and they went with us....their failures at THIS level would be magnified and they'd see that lovely horseshoe of a stadium/shit pond be essentially empty after 2-3 years of failure.

They have had years of failure already at this level and yet they still average over 17000 per game. What does this say?

No they don't, they avg 11,190 in 2016...http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/Attendance/2016.pdf

If you are referring to MSU, they average 17,709 for 2016 ranked #6 on the chart you displayed.

Just FYI: The confusion of 11 thou (UI) vs 17 thou (MSU) was explained earlier in the thread. That was a down year, BTW. Over the past several years, UI averaged 12-14 thousand for home attendance.

When was the last time Idaho beat a top tier Big Sky Team? The last few games against EWU and Montana didn't go in Idaho's favor...
