Departures

Reading the Amie Just article just recently in the Missoulian it says there were 18 departures from last season... definitely 3 to 4 I’d say were big time losses... is that normal? I’ve noticed as this internet thing progresses that our access to info improves is great!!! — But is this departure normal? I know it’s a new coaching staff but we lost a few big time gets it seems?!

And it all comes down to coaching IMO.., not sure why they’d dump Hauck after being recruited by Stitt?!!!

And... on 247 Sports I think the Cats have the 2nd or 3rd best recruiting class in FCS this past year as far as (stars) but being able to follow recruiting in the internet age is interesting.... and I don’t think (stars) have a lot to do with much generally unless you’re in the upper caliber of the FBS

They lost 9 of those “stars” recently with three different 3 star guys not making it to fall camp. So that big time recruiting class took a big time hit.

As for departures, Hauck himself said he figure they’d have 25-30 guys with roster turnover. So far we have 18 and 3 of them were before Hauck was hired at all. So it sounds crazy but I thought we’d lose way more kids by now. Shows me these kids want to be Grizzlies and they think Hauck can help them win a championship.

Don’t forget the roster turnover with both Stitt and Choate in their first couple of years was like 40 kids.

"The full list of the players not returning for 2018: Jensen, cornerback Markell Sanders, wide receiver Nate Dick, safety Isiahia Banks, wide receiver Jared Thurber, running back Cody McCombs, athlete Josh Deshner, linebacker Kendall Sweet, running back Josh Labrador*, cornerback Curtis Holmes, defensive end Chris Favoroso, defensive end Trevor Hoerner, linebacker Carder Key, linebacker Gage Smith, offensive tackle Ashton Torres, offensive lineman Payton Stoner, wide receiver Mitch McLaughlin and wide receiver Braxton Reiten.

*Editor's Note: Labrador left the team during the middle of last season."

Not near as big of a turnover as I had expected considering the differences between the two staffs.

And even a smaller amount that might actually be attributed to these changes.

Agreed. Attrition is normal and expected as student-athletes leave for many reasons: personal/family, grades, physical health, lack of playing time, and the list goes on. It's also normal and expected that some will leave after a coaching staff change. Turnover happens in every job market, even with much older (and theoretically wiser) adults, so it's not surprising it happens with 18-23 year old athletes.

While I don't know why some of these guys left, it looks like several left or decided before the coaching change, a number retired due to injuries, and several transferred to lower levels to get playing time. And the two high profile ones. Obviously, there are some in another category or category, including perhaps not liking the new coaches or not liking the toughness of the winter/spring activities.

Several players have said that the spring practices were the hardest practices they had ever experienced. I noticed how fast the practice pace was, and how almost every position group was doing something at all times, excerpts perhaps 11 on 11 stuff. I didn't recall that much activity from when Hauck was here previously.

I like that BH keeps saying that most have bought in, including seniors, and they really want to win--and BH says that gives the team a chance (to be successful). Several players who graduated last year have said that continuing players have said the graduates would have enjoyed playing under the new coaches more than the old coaches.

Plus, I like the playing physical and tough part.

I hear some rumors of naysayers on the team too, but I have not had any direct contact with any in that category. Apparently there may be some physical/illness issues with an o-lineman or two. Suppose we will learn more about that today. Germer has a lot of physical talent, size and athleticism to work with. They are apparently going to play meaner and tougher. I still feel that somehow the o-line will rise to the occasion. Next man up.

Might not be done yet. No insider information, camp begins in earnest this afternoon & there’s a lot of time to form opinions & impressions that will likely lead to other folks heading for the exit. And I’d say the same thing to them as this bunch, best of luck to you.

What does this have anything to do with the departures from the griz roster?

At first I thought you were going to point out that some of those recruits aren’t currently on the team, like hookedongriz did, but you didn’t even mention that, your post was purely about what 247 sports thought of the Cats recruiting class.

About those guys not being there, it’s a definite bummer, no denying it. One guy is gone and not coming back, the door is still open for the other two to make it there, but I won’t hold my breathe on that.

I’ve been impressed with the general lack of turnover from the Griz so far. It happens with a new coaching staff, period, but with Hauck being so different from Stitt, I did anticipate more.

Great point. We should not be surprised if a few more leave, and I seriously doubt the coaching staff is wringing their hands over the departures. Gotta work with the willing, and they will always have enough of them. GoGriz!!
