Denver Game...

Hey...the Griz won by 19, doesn't anybody have anything to bitch about? What am I supposed to read all night if everyone isn't on the board whining like bitches and calling each other names like a bunch of 2-year-olds.

Griz were led by AJ and Sharp with 13 each. It was only a one point lead at the half. The Griz used primarily a zone in the second half and completely stifled Denver's offense. Denver only scored 18 in the 2nd half. Nice win! :D

I watched the game on Bigskytv, and hope in time they can give us better camera angles. It is tough to breakdown what is going on from it. Here it goes. I am very encouraged the GRIZ had the discipline to shoot only 7 3's. They were very focused on ball movement and experimenting on offense. They really are trying to strengthen their weaknesses. Alot of post touches, penetrating and dishing. Everyone was on the same page in finding only the best shots. Tinkle also got 10 players solid minutes.

I liked seeing Selvig actually in the paint a little more often. His passing and awareness is so much above an average BSC big man. I am guessing Tinkle knows our offensive strengths are Hasquet, Stauds, and AJ. Recently I too am pretty comfortable in knowing those guys are going to be consistent. I hope the GRIZ continue to build early comfortable leads and work on getting others up to par on both ends of the court. We are certainly developing our depth, Sharp, Johnson, and Selvig are looking very good off the bench. Dare I say "It looks like we are starting to find consistency and guys learning their roles. "

It is also beginning to look like McGillis is finally starting to just let the game come to him. He is still struggling with his scoring, but he is contributing every other way. I absolutely love his ability to create for teammates when he takes it to the hole. The GRIZ also are looking for him on backside alley oops and backdoors now. They should have had 2 alleyoop dunks for him tonight, but Stauds over threw the 1st one, nonetheless they were things of beauty. McGillis, along with AJ and CET got their hands on alot of passes finally.

Post wise, I think Tinkle is going to determine minutes from Qvale and Sharp based on what we need when. Sharp is much better offensively. Qvale gives us rebounding and shotblocking. Tinkle will be going with the one making the most impact. Meanwhile Selvig will continue to be part of a 4 man post rotation. Our offense runs best when he is on the court. I also liked that the GRIZ used Selvig defending the middle when Qvale and Sharp were sitting. Yet he also looked very good extending the perimeter wing defense when either were in. Selvig was in defensive position consistently all game.

Speaking of defense, our matchup zone looked like it knew what it was doing finally. The rotations and positioning for the most part was the way it is supposed to be. Very few defensive breakdowns against Denver. The biggest improvement I noticed compared to the CSU game was the GRIZ were sticking to their defensive responsiblities and not overreacting on rapid ball movement.

Defensively and offensively they are improving and working on what Tinkle wants them to work on. I will not be surprised if we continue to cutback on the 3 pt shots through OOC play. Speaking of 3's though I do hope we find another consistent 3 pt shooter. Right now I do not have as much faith from 3 from anyone other than Stauds and Hasquet. I would love for Taylor and or McGillis find their perimeter games.

Now for the bad/weaknesses that need improvement still. (1) FT shooting (2) Consistent rebounding (3) Inside scoring. For (3) I want to see Selvig, Hasquet, and even McGillis post up their men to with Qvale and Sharp. We need 1 or 2 of those 3 to develop an inside offensive presence.

I still do not know what to expect with the GRIZ. I will be hoping the continue to play like they have the last 2 games, and not go back old ways of the last few years. I really think Johnson speaking out has really brought this team together. Since then, it appears they are on the same page with common goals. BTW he reminds of Matthews with better scoring. Now who can become Criswell?

Keep it going GRIZ, this Fan is very encouraged over the last few games. :thumb:

Man, and I thought UND was bad. Denver is the screaming sh***s. They are now 0-5, so that isn't exactly a revelation. They have to start THE skinniest collection of 5 white clothes-lines that I have ever seen in D1. And as lifelong white clothes-line myself I feel qualified to say that. Seriously, those kids were like 150 pounds a piece. Their jerseys fit like a tent on every one of them. If they don't have anyone on the team that can fill out those 5 inch wide tank-top parts (or whatever you call that part of the jersey over the shoulders), why outfit the skinniest team in D1 with the widest-possible collars? Among their top 6 players they have 3 frosh and 2 sophs, so this team is extremely young (and obviously underfed) and may improve in a year or 2, but seriously, they suck ASS right now. UND would beat them 8 out of 10 times and they are dreadful. Tinks tried to talk up UND's win over MO-KC and then tonight had the cajones to say in the post-game that Denver "might not lose by 19 points again all year" and other complete BS, not seen since Lou Holtz. If Denver can keep any D1 team within 19, it will be a major accomplishment. If we played Denver 100 times, we would beat them by more than 30 half the time. We played like crap and still won by 19. I can't emphasize enough how shitty Denver is. If UT-Arlington doesn't win by 19+ Friday night, I won't post again until 2009. I love Tinks and will always be behind him deep-down, but he needs to chill out a little and quit talking up obviously horrible opponants. It questions his credibility in my mind. I hope it is just coach-speak BS, and he is only trying to make his unimpressive wins look more impressive than they are to naive, clueless fans/boosters that only hear the pre-game shows and read egriz to form their opinions and don't know any better that UND and Denver are 2 of the worst D1 teams in America, period. And anyone who saw them in person knows it too. I put my entire reputation on the line that UT-Arlington wins by 19+ Friday night.

Damnit ZIRG, I held back mentioning his comment about UD. I cannot argue with you about them. However, opponents aside I am honestly seeing alot of positives, most of which is on defense.

I like this Griz team too quite a lot, that probably didn't come across. I think we got we got all kinds of skilled guys. I mean if it was a fantasy b-ball league I would draft 7 or 8 Griz before anyone on Denver. Their 6'9" 180 pound frosh or soph Center had some game, but seriously. 180 pounds? That might work in NAIA, but not in D1.

When you win by 19 the positives are obvious, but to even try to insinuate that beating Denver by 19 is impressive, I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. I just can't get past that, if you couldn't tell. At some point you gotta admit that SOME teams you beat aren't that good, or nothing you say is believable.

Ok, some positives that I saw:

Selvig is growing on me. He can shoot the 3, Rebound, pass, and is EXTREMELY athletic for being 7'. I keep questioning if he is truly 7', because he seems way too graceful for being that tall, then he stands next to the other teams tallest guy and he skies over him. He is a complete player that will start chipping in and contributing rapidly I have no doubt. I was more excited about him tonight than anyone.

McGillis continues to show glimpses of super-stardom and an extreme lack of confidence in equal measures. He is frustrating to watch right now, because everyone (especially Jack) knows he is just not himself yet. I'm still not worried about him.

AJ was great again tonight, but he did have at least one really stupid Turn-over. 1 bad To for every 11 points scored works for me though. He is really close to breaking out-way closer than McGillis is. When Tinks screams at him after a mistake (as he does to everyone), I have been very impressed with how AJ takes Tinks criticism. He is quick to acknowledge his mistake and shows Tinks a lot of respect in a very mature manner. I couldn't be more impressed with him. He's everything you want in a player. Tremendous skill, great shooter, great drive-to-the-basket ability,point-guard skills, extremely athletic, great attitude, team-player. He was more excited on his assist to a Stauds 3 than he was all night. A guy that enjoys seeing his team-mates score is a winner in my book. We got a coup-and-a-half getting him. He's gonna be everyone's favorite before he's through.

Sharpie was Player of the game, so he was good too. It was a total-team win if there every was one. Most everyone played well, as they should against a mediocre opponent, although Qvale continues to show that he can miss a gimme lay-up or a dunk (Can he even dunk? Seriously? I'm am only half-kidding) even if no one defends him. How someone that tall can have such inability to score with no opposition is baffling. Oops I was trying to point out the positives. sorry

Like I said, I am putting my $ where my mouth is, you won't hear from me for a month it Tinks is right about Denver.

Must be the married life. :D

Mtgrizrule and Zirg I couldnt agree more with both your observations. Very insightful analysis. We will see if they can maintain the momentum and play with passion. The one thing that continues to bother me is the lack of rebounding both offensive and defensive. They dont seem to get in position very well or block out. Qvale cannot jump no if ands or buts. I think this is going to be an ongoing problem all season for them especially with athletic front lines who will keep the ball in play by tipping it from behind until one of the opposing players gets the rebound.

Qvale has some pretty good hops actually. If you can find the video of him and Andrew Strait from last year playing a game of PIG, you can see that on one of his dunks. Not sure if that video is still available though :(

Being in good position to get the rebound is a big part. We so often have so many of our big guys floating around outside of the arc (as mslacat pointed out in another post) that when it comes to offensive rebounding, it's going to be difficult for us to get that many.

Rebounds on defense are another issue.... In the previous games we've seemed pretty soft on the defensive boards. A couple players that seem to be very tough, despite their size, on the boards are Sharp & Banny. They are both very physical players when it comes to rebounding. McGillis of course always shows great hustle out there too. Our bigger guys though have a tendency (in my opinion) to be not physical enough, and get shoved around and/or don't get very good position when it comes to getting rebounds.
