Delaney may want to toss "Interim" tag

Way too early to say whether the interim tag should be dropped. By all accounts, Mick is the right choice for the upcoming season. He seems like a very good guy and I hope we have a hugely succesful year and he stays on. However, if the season goes badly (ie: 5-6), we will need to start the search for a "permanent" coach.
Thank You Captain Obvious...dont be afraid to go out on a limb with you comments next time!

obviously you didn't read any of the prior posts, ds.

Mick cannot win on EGriz - 5-6 record he sucks, or he's just too old. I know little of Delaney other than some informal meetings, but all of EGriz seems to have it figured out.

How old was President Donald Read when he took over our program? Wasn't he of similar age? Not that age hurts in my mind - I wanna say Read was no spring chicken when he took our program but I'm not sure....
Read was 53 when he started coaching the Griz, 62 when he retired, and 71 when he took over as AD. Delaney is 69.

If you keep one eye on the wanted ads, then you tend not to be focused on the job at hand. If you perform poorly, then your future options are limited. This coaching staff is experienced at all levels of the sports, and they enjoy coaching the kids, this point is obvious.

At least he inherited a stocked cupboard............unlike Pflu.

Mick will be just fine this year and into the playoffs.

I'm thinking more about the disruption again of a new coaching staff/scheme/etc. again after next year. If it's known that a new coach is coming in 2013 doesn't the current staff sort of have one eye on the ball and one eye on the want adds? Doesn't this force retention for the sake of continuity? I don't know, I'm just wondering.

Gosh, it's so great that the Scat fans are so concerned with GRIZ football! You had better be "wondering," Hokey, because you're going to get it handed to you in a scat bag. :P
Wow, are you seriously thinking that i'm talking smack?!?!? I just posed a simple question, nothing more.

isn't the administration almost forced to make him permanent regardless of how the griz do next year?

I don't see why they would.

I think it forces the perception of retention...not necessarily actual retention.

I am personally stoked about this year and Mick being the guy going into the future. For as long as he wants to do it. Obviously we won't know if that is a possibility until this season goes by. But I couldn't be more excited to see what he can do, now that he's been given the chance. The players all respect him, past and current, and he's created some pretty amazing football players in his coaching tenure.

The only true way to see how good of a head coach someone will be, is to make him head coach. And I certainly wouldn't want a guy if he didn't want to be the permanent head coach.

Good Luck to our Griz this year, and best of luck to coach Delaney. Griz Nation is behind you!

He has the respect of players who have played for him in the past as well as currently. He has the respect of coaches around the country. He is respected by parents. He is respected by anyone who has ever had any contact with the man.
You said it right there, "He is respected by anyone who has ever had any contact with the man." Mick just has integrity oozing out of him... not to meniton has a great football mind (especially offensive).

Man the Griz offense came looked dominating in the big spring game!

Players on camera (Montanans Sam Gratton and Brock Coyle) are very happy with the choice of Mick. Coyle was extrememly complimentary of Mick, saying "awesome" and that Mick "truely wants to make you a better football player", and more...

Mick has coached many RBs into the NFL, I remember one of his student/ahtletes at Colorado State, a RB, that went to the NFL as crediting Mick for being a role model/father figure for him.

Mick is just a great guy (everyone will tell you that), and knows what a successful football team/program looks like. Hec he's been the number 2 guy in Missoula the past handful of years even (Ass. Head Coach).

Butte has been called the "Cradle of coaches in Montana", and Mick is the next Butte guy to claim his head coachng fame. I have all the confidence in the world in Mick and the current coaching staff. (OC sure dialed up a great airiel attack during the big spring game)

2012 looks EXCITING!!!

I agree. I'm pretty amazed at how he's handled a really difficult situation so far. He seems like the type of guy who can bring people together. I'm looking forward to seeing how it translates on the field.

I agree. If Mick is successful and wants to coach for a couple more seasons then so be it. I don't know the man but know alot of people that do and it's tough to find anybody who has anything bad to say about him. The situation with him becoming HC sucked but now looking back we couldn't have a better guy at the helm. If they had of cleaned house and gutted the coaching staff and brought in and new HC and staff I would bet we would have lost some of the new recruits and possibly up to 20% of the players already here and looking forward to a very unknown season that could have been a disaster. Now we are talking about playoffs and Frisco and such and based on what I saw sat night I think the Griz are in great shape and won't miss a beat this fall.

Mic said something about the kids being more resilient than adults, which is true. The fans adapt to change a lot slower and more resistence than the players. O would guess the loss of some principle position coaches would have as much or more effect than a HC. Its the position coach that most spend the bulk of their time with. These kids have spent more time with other adults as their leaders and mentors than their own parents (in many cases) since Kindergarten Those adults have changed once year since they were 5, twice a year since the were 12. Mic is a constant presence for a number of years for these players. If we are talking influence from a coach, we are just fine.

If we are talking consistency in coaching staff making the difference, we should fear Northern Arizona.....

18-22 year old college students are adults.

Are they? Guess it depends on your age looking back. and the maturity of the "adults" and not legislation used to justify a draft 40 years ago.

you can go out on your own. you can vote. you can get married. you can smoke. you should be able to drink but that's another topic. you can go to war. if you commit a crime, you're charged as an adult. yes...when you're 18 you're an adult. only time people say otherwise is when these guys are doing something stupid!

i call them kids myself as they are younger than me and it just comes out that way. but i bet if you asked any of your players if he considered himself a kid or an adult....he'd say adult. just if you asked him if he was a boy or a man....he'd say man.

Even the Coaches call them Kids but none of that was the point, they will apat quite well to a new coach, changes are waht they are used to. Oh by the way physiologically they aren't "adults" yet either. Most are still growing, but more importantly the part of their brain that makes decisions (good or bad) isn't fully developed yet (generally not until they are 25 or so.) The coaches (and others) in their life are a huge determinant in how that "brain" finishes up.

How else do you think they're able to convince 19-year-old marines to run into a hail of gunfire? :o

This cognitive delay and lack of ability to think clearly explains the youth vote for Obama! Thanks for the info.

'Gina you just moved up a notch in my book. That puts you at notch ONE. Irregardless, I like your style! 8-)

I hope Delaney can make drastic improved impact on one thing. Please improve our short yardage results. As much as I loved the 2011 team/season, that drove me insane all season.
