You can begin analyzing the long-term recruiting strengths of potential candidates. You can decide now whether you want to stick with the schemes your team currently uses and begin scouting coaches who use those schemes.
If you think your current base salary for head coach is insufficient to attract your next coach, then you are way better off planning ahead for how you are going to increase the base salary for your next head coach, especially if your school is in a tough financial situation, as Montana is currently.
Montana would be way better off if it used Mick's time at UM to develop profiles on multiple potential candidates and then began planning on what it would take to make those candidates "available," assuming Montana's next head coach will be gainfully employed at the time the position of Griz head coach becomes available.
Joe Glenn wasn't exactly available when UM came knocking, neither was Bobby Hauck. They were both good hires and ones who were being looked at before their predecessors left. This will be the biggest decision Kent Haslam makes probably for the next 10 years, assuming he bucks the average tenure of UM athletic directors and lasts that long.

I don't see any reason why Delaney can't coach 2-4 more years, as long as his team is producing results on the field. The "too old" thing is B.S.

We have a winning coach preparing for the playoffs. Let's apprrciate that until we know what Mick wants to do.

Hopefully Kent Haslam is working on his list for the eventual change.

With the system that we run now, I will be seriously pissed if Van Diest isn't in the conversation for head coach if Delaney decides he is through. The topic has been beaten to death, and some don't think he would make a good D-1 coach, but I call BS. His team competed very well last year when they played Portland State, and you don't win as many games as MVD has if you're not a good head coach, at any level.
