Delaney announces his retirement

Thanks Mick for righting the ship! Now the team needs to make a run into the playoffs to send him off into retirement with the class he deserves!

I went to Western when Delaney was the coach. Great guy and always made time to talk to the students even if they were not an athlete. He and Dennehy built a solid foundation that Bob Beers used to dominate the Frontier Conference in the Mid 90's that got them all the way to the semi finals. I'll never forget the playoff game in Dillon when Western beat Glenville State who was coached at the time by Rich Rod! A lot of those guys were Dennehy and Delaney recruits.

Griz nation is buoyed by tradition and is the flagship of FCS football. I'm sure many excellent candidates will be interested in casting off from lesser programs to take tiller at UM.

I agree, however, They just have to be afforded the opportunity.

Thanks to Coach Mick for his three years as our HC !!! Although I didn't always agree with his decisions, he did a very admirable job in difficult circumstances when he took over following Pflu and Jim O'Day's firing in 2012.

Tap 'er light, Coach !!!

As far as Coach Delaney's successor, he said a lot of weight should be given to his staff. I agree--I think Scott Gragg or Ty Gregorak deserve serious consideration if they are interested. I know neither is perfect, but I think both have really grown as assistant coaches and as coordinators, both would be logical candidates and would demonstrate tradition and continuity to our current players and incoming recruits. (Yes, I would go through a national search, and anyone including these two should have to put a plan on the table in front of the search committee and be able to defend it on how to grow the program's success on the field and in the classroom.)

The basketball program has continuity through Jud, Brandenberg, Monty, Taylor, Stu, Holst, Krysko, Tinks and now Coach Travis.

We do not realize it, but so does the football program: Coach Read, Dennehy, Glenn, Bobby, Pflu, Mick and now .... Whether it is someone with current or past ties to the program does not really matter. And I do agree that Dave Dickensen should at least be asked about the job, even if Super Dave is interested himself, he might have some candidates and suggestions that could help the search committee. We have a deep bench of current and former GRIZ players/assistants that would love to guide the program keep and build our tradition, one these candidates with current and former ties know all about !!!

Good luck to him in retirement, hopefully he can stay retired and enjoy life!
He sat in front of me at Connor's funeral in April at the stadium and since then I've respected him for it. :thumb:

Although I have not always been supportive of his coaching style and some of the decisions that have been made, I have always been supportive of Mick Delaney the man. In retrospect he was the right man for the job at that time. Most of us will never experience the amount of pressure that the head football coach of a program as famous/infamous as Montana has to endure. In Mick's case those normal pressures were magnified exponentially!

Regardless of how you feel about the state of the team, the staff, the administration or any of the other nit picky criticism's that afflict this board on a daily basis, I think we should all congratulate Mick Delaney on a Life Well Lived, a Career Well Realized and a Job Well Done.

Mick, Congratulations, and enjoy your retirement! You have certainly earned it.

Great guy but glad he is gone. He and his staff misused the talent that the Griz have so badly it's sad. They tried to fit a square peg into a round hole with the offense, and they don't seem to know what a blitz is.

They need to start fresh. Get someone from outside the program. The staff are all great guys, but we need new blood.

And no way Dickenson comes back.

For all the frustrations that have been mentioned with his game day coaching choices, no one can question the imact he has had off the field. In 3 short years I cannot recall one major issue. Although that should be the norm and not anything to get special acknowledgment for, it was refreshing to see the Griz put that stuff behind them and move forward. While I welcome the change to a more stable coaching system (and hopefully only 1 OC) I would like to thank Mick for his time and committment to this univerisity. THANK YOU! Now lets go out of on a high note starting with Saturday!

There's a street sign in Missoula that would disagree with your assessment. :D

Forgot about that, although not sure if that is considered major or not. Neverless, if that is the only thing we are talking about in the Delaney area, Im perfectly OK with that.

He said "major." Although, to the street sign, it was pretty major.

the guy with sunshine's original moniker has a thing for street signs, so it was a major thing for him.

I hardly ever post on this board anymore, no explanation needed, but I couldn't miss the chance to thank Mick for what he has done.

Not that he will read this, but the whole FB program could have been doing the coriolis effect thing, swirling down the toilet. He saved us from that. You can say what you will about his x's and o's but he did a great job of doing what he does.

Love ya Mick. Wish you and your family the best.
