Defensive Scheme

5280, weren't the one talking about the formula to beat the Cats and MV teams, of just winning the run game, TOP and maybe one of other thing. Ill St dominated in those areas, and didn't win. There's no formula. It changes year to year, game to game, and team to team. And passing and ST are very important. It's not just running and run D.

This is one of the reasons I don't think you know much about the game of football.
ISU won basically every stat except for special teams but time of possession is the only one I think you could say they dominated as in had almost double what MSU did. ISU should have won except their special teams goofed up. The good news with Montana is our special teams have always been a strength of the team.

I can, but that's one team and there are many other teams and a long season. The Griz are 13-2 and will be ranked no. 3 in the nation. Why can't you see that? Griz have been ranked no. 3 or higher post-season once since about 2009. Are you blind, prejudiced or just stupid about football? I know you think the season revolves around the Cats, but I don't, nor do most people who understand football. This is my gripe with you. You don't understand football. You just don't. I understand football, and you don't. I played at a high level and you didn't. You make some of the dumbest posts.

I got a little carried away. I apologize for taking a personal shot.

Maybe it’s the way you talk, or the fact that you gate keep fandom. I’m sorry that not everyone is as nuanced and educated about football as you apparently are. According to you one must have played D1 ball in order to have an opinion. Anyone who has invested time, effort, money, scholarship, and passion can’t have an opinion because they didn’t play in college? Very few people are fortunate enough to have that privilege. I get it’s hard work and I for sure don’t understand how hard it actually is.

I get that the cats are only one game (or in this case two), but I do think they are the most important one. It means much more when you think about recruiting, momentum, and money in the state. Losing those games casts a pall on what the team accomplished because these were the BIGGEST games. They matter the most. 13 wins IS an incredible accomplishment. It would be different if falling short was against SDSU or NDSU. But it was against THEM. It’s emotional and both logical and illogical at the same time.

My gripe with you is that you can’t see that. You are so caught up in the number of wins that you can’t see that the university is at an inflection point. The wealth of the state is firmly fixed on Bozeman. They have the programmatic vision at all levels of the university while UM appears to waffle. That has to change. I believe that Montana can be so much more than what it currently is. It has potential to grow and do great things. But it seems like you are just fine where it’s at.

I’m prone to hyperbole. I get it. You think my perspective isn’t worth it. I’m not going to change your mind. But at least think about where people are coming from.

Again, I apologize for taking shots. That’s not really me.

I have NEVER, even once, said someone has to have played college football to have an opinion or post. I have often said that I can see in poster's posts, like yours, that you never played the game. What you say in some posts just completely gives that away. So, stop crying and misrepresenting what I say.

If there was a personal shot from you, I didn't notice or don't remember.

No, it's you who can't see that the 2 Cat losses are not more important than the whole season. This is another example of your posts showing that you have never played the game. This is a very good example of what I keep saying about you, and those who never played the game. You don't understand sport. You don't understand football.

I am not caught up in the number of wins at all. I look at the whole season, how the team played, and the success they had. You are caught up in 2 games, and can't see the other 13 games. My god, the team is going to be ranked no. 3 in the nation. How can you not see and say that that is a very successful season?

Again, it is you who caught up in having lost to the Cats twice. Ya, not great, but that doesn't mean the team didn't have a terrific season. That doesn't mean the coaches didn't coach well.

You are completely blind to what is going on. I didn't say you prospective isn't "worth it". I am saying that what you are saying in completely WRONG. Not one player, parent or coach believes it was a bad season because there were 2 losses and they were to the Cats. I guarantee you that none of them like those losses, tho. In fact, they hate those loses.

I'm not sure what your point is, but, again, your formula from a few days ago, which I said was wrong, was completely not successful for ISU. That was the point I'm making. Football and games are almost always more complicated that the narrow formula you tried to come up with.

We are going to agree to disagree then. I did play all the way through HS. I just wasn’t big enough or talented enough to play at the next level. Who wants a 5’ 9” 200 lb guard??? lol. I was best at ski racing, which funny enough, all my teammates were offensive and defensive lineman.

I can be wrong, no doubt. But so can you. In all reality, the truth is somewhere between our points. Cheers.

So you "played the game" the same level as the head coach.....I vote you can give your opinions

Big sky teams have never had dominant lines, it hasn't happened in the 50 years I've been a fan and its not going to happen now. Give Bobby some credit, he knows what he is doing and his 335 his the best way to deal with reality. Same with offense, this was the first year in his reign he actually tried something different. The problem is we do not have good enough players on defense to run his scheme. Its not the scheme. Bobby isnt recruiting the players we need as he is a portal guy. We can be good with that but not good enough. Bobby is a very good coach just not good enough
The cats lines were not dominant against the reds, the reds coach lost that game. Although Vegan is a far superior recruiter than Bobby he's not smarter than Bobby.
Griz need a really talented smart coach to beat the cats, and I'm not talking a nutrition and strength coach. A high IQ guy is needed. Someone who would never waste time on egriz.

Found comments from Kyle Whittingham's interview on the Rich Eisen show, informative and straight forward in regard to handling high turnover and his plan for defensive scheme with Jay Hill.

"In this day and age of the portal where you have so many new guys, you better have a very user-friendly system on both sides of the ball. You can't be complicated anymore. You know you got to plug in 40, 50 new guys and they better be able to help and contribute right away. And if you've got too much thinking going on, that's not a good situation."

"Four-down front, a 4-2 nickel setup, which is what 90% of the people base out of these days," Whittingham said. "It's geared towards 11 personnel. If we go to 12 personnel, then we go ahead and jump into a 4-3 and we substitute with the offense, but it bases out of that 4-2-5 scheme."

I think that is completely correct but I doubt Bobby agrees. In some ways Bobby has adapted well to the portal but in other ways he just hasn't.
