Defensive Help

Well-known member
In the challenging games of the 2013 season, NAU, Sac State, EWU and Coastal Carolina put up the points on the Griz Defense ... a lot of points. In my opinion, Defense wins championships and The Griz still needs to put more pressure on teams' QBs, shutdown WRs and limit passing yardage. Are JUCO transfers not an option @ Montana? C'Mon get some DBs and DLs to put pressure on the opponents' passing games. :|

We've brought in a lot of JUCO/dropdown transfers in years past....with a mixed bag of success. ALL 19 of these guys were on the 2011 Griz Roster--either JUCO or dropdown:

Kevin Franks (CB)
CJ Atkins (WR)
Antwon Moutra (WR, UCLA)
Nate Montana (QB)
Houston Roots (CB)
Marlon Myles (CB)
Andrew Badger (SS)
Jordan Hines (OL)
Logan Hines (OL)
Steve Sabin (OL)
Kjelby Oiland (OL, UNLV)
Jeremy LaPan (OL)
Jake Hendrickson (OL)
Brody McKnight (K, Purdue)
Kavario Middleton (TE, UW)
Bobby Alt (DE)
Garrett Rigio (DE)
Sean Wren (P)
Ben Hughes (DT)

Last year (2013) we were down to 12 transfers on the roster:

Anthony Goodwin (CB)
Jamaal Jones (WR, UW)
Ellis Henderson (WR, Hawaii)
Travon Van (RB, Marshall)
Marlon Myles (RB, Western Michigan)
Jamaal Anderson (CB)
Jamaal Wilson (FB, Boise St)
Kendrick Van Ackeren (LB, Hawaii)
Jeremiah Kose (LB)
Jordan Hines (OL)
Logan Hines (OL)
Kjelby Oiland (OL, UNLV)

There are pluses and minuses to bringing in JUCO players. Interestingly, that 2011 defense was much better than the 2013 unit IMO.

We had a corner who could shut down half the field. Makes a defense better. Say what you want about Richard Sherman, but he won more games than he lost because of his skills. What I have noticed about JC or transfer players regardless of their position is that it takes at least a year before they "break out" because of a new system and everything.

The JUCO route isn't the most successful for Lakes Lancers. I suggest to parents, "Send your student-athlete to the university of your choice as a walk-on, get them a tutor and see what happens." I know few Lakes Lancers that have transferred from JUCOs to NCAA programs successfully.

Defensive help starts at the top so as long as hangover rebel is in charge the defense is gonna need help.

The defense did improve from 2012 to 2013. I am hoping it continues to improve. It starts with Gregorak. It has a long way to go for the GRIZ to be a true Championship contender again.

Agreed. But he's been DC for what? Two years? He doesn't even have any of his players in the lineup yet...the players he's playing he inherited....

I will be the 1st to admit, I do wish his schemes/strategy was a little more aggressive though. I thought the defense turned it around the last 3 regular season games. I was confident the defense would show better in the playoffs. I was very disappointed in the loss to Coastal Carolina, especially the defense.

Ill give him one more year.. He's already sitting with 2 strikes. He has to shake that weak zone mentality or is it he just doesn't trust who he has playing out on the field?

Example: The secondary

I think one more year is fair. We have a lot of experience returning in the secondary. Hermanson will be preseason all conference at Safety. DL id deep and talented. LB is inexperienced. We do have very solid cover LB's though. I will be disappointed if Gregorak continues to be passive in pass coverage, and teams pass all over us for a 3rd year in a row.
