DeCuire

Except that those minutes were coming in blowouts. The exception being the Gonzaga game, where Breunig and Fab got in early foul trouble
Yes, I noted it was the non-conference play.

Later, Boehning was getting very few minutes (speculation all over the board about his absence at a couple of games), and DeJong was getting more. I'd have to go back and look to see if DeJong's minutes improved appreciably or not, I don't think they did, but they didn't change like Bohening's did, and whether his scoring efficiency held up or not.

Boehing is no longer on the team. The word is, and this second hand so take it for what it's worth, he came back out of shape, over weight, and did not do what was asked of him on the break. I'm told it was a mutual separation based on the fact his heart was no longer in the rigors of Div. 1 BB. If he decides to transfer I'm sure he would do well at a Frontier Conf. school.
The best of luck to him and his future endeavors.

Wow! That's some news.

Everett Griz: I have probably attended more Griz games that you can count so your snide comments about being a Montana pretender are not well taken. Also you may not know that Gonzaga was a member of the Big Sky for about 15 years, watched them play in Spokane many times. With regards to last years game, Montana did give Gonzaga a real scare but a loss is a loss. Mark Few said the Montana center was probably one of the best that they faced all year. All this brings me back to my original point, they need quality bigs if they are going to compete on the level that DeCuire has laid out for them and I see no sign of that at this time. I hope they do well with their schedule and can attract good recruits or transfers in the coming years.

Wow. This explains what I considered to be a rather puzzling Griz scholarship offer to a recently graduated H. S. senior late last week. The Griz apparently made an offer to 6'-8" (6-6 according to ESPN) power forward Chris Seeley from Central H. S. in Corona, CA. http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/chris-seeley

In order for the Griz to make that offer, there obviously, had to be an opening on this year's roster. If wat Sport says is accurate, it explains the situation with Seeley.

Seeley is a 2016 H. S. grad... a freshman-to-be, who has not-yet commited to a school. His composite rating on Verbal Commits is 2.7, but he is rated as a 3-star recruit by both ESPN and Scout.

You see "no sign" of quality bigs being recruited at this time?? :? Exhibit one would be incoming freshman Alphonso Anderson.

Alphonso Anderson is 6'6"...not exactly a "BIG"....
Alphonso is listed as a 6'7' power forward on verbalcommits. If you are talking about the traditional 6'10"ish semi stationary center then you are right. Otherwise, do you remember Kamarr Davis? Travis is building a team largely based on speed and athleticism. I also think this is the direction many major programs are headed in if they are not already there.

Exactly. Everyone wants to play like the Warriors.

Well, with the 3 pt rule, it's intriguing what a coach these days might try to put together leaving behind the old 2 guard, 2 forward, center structure. Five fast guards? Wear the other team's big guys out by the Half? Remembering Oguine getting some awesome rebounds, I remember thinking last season, do we really need big guys for rebounding?

Sanity check (rebounds):
Breunig: 298
Oguine: 146
Krslovic: 138
Wright: 117

Krslovic's are particularly impressive because of playtimes:
Breunig: 624 minutes
Oguine: 363
Krslovic: 307
Wright: 434

So, yes.

Don't fret about being slammed by Mount Everett. He is a non-athlete who tries to you "educate" posters who know about athletics.

Losing Breunig is obviously a big loss, but I did not realize until I saw those playtimes just how much of a workhorse he really was for UM Basketball. And that was after all sorts of foul troubles. DeCuire has his work cut out for him. He's already got the guard talent, but how DO you replace somebody like Martin Breunig where the success of the team was literally structured around one player?

DeCuire has said that he will rely on developing current "bigs." That's pretty much Krslovic and, if Boehning is gone, DeJong. He's athletic and has the reach. Can he do it? Big shoes to fill, literally and figuratively. Can anyone fill them?

Breunig was 6-8 but played taller. DeJong is listed at 6-6 but plays taller and Krslovic is 6-8. Moorehead is 6-7 and rebounded well last season for a perimeter forward. But don't overlook young Jared Samuelson who's 6-7 and is quite skilled in the paint playing with his back to the basket; or, as a power forward, or as a perimeter wing (an excellent perimeter shooter). I've heard he can play a solid physical game in the paint. I've also heard that Anderson is powerfully built and -- whatever his height -- is a solid power forward with potential to rebound well. The Griz have also recruited transfer 6-8 PF Jamar Akoh (must sit one year) who -- at 240 lbs, -- fits the classic pf mold. Don't know how he rebounded this past season.

Wasn't Boehning's departure almost a foregone conclusion from last year later in the season, when he disappeared from the bench and then barely several weeks later when he returned? Early in the year, I had thought he had some potential.

After regular season start he didn't get much. Note, this graph includes points scored during the non-conf season and is misleading about points scored during the regular season, whereas minutes played is the conf season. The efficiency figures are, therefore, not correct. This is for the sole purpose of showing Boehning's minutes played during the regular season and, if you wish, that DeJong was played nearly 3x as much.

For a big guy like Boehning, DeCuire might be just the coach to bring him up to speed.
On the other hand, I also thought Wayne Tinkle was the coach to bring Andy Martin along; 7 feet is a nice asset to have but that just didn't happen and Decuire saw it differently.

You supposedly live in Washington yet are unfamiliar with Alphonso Anderson? I can assume you either do not remotely follow HS BB in the state, or you're just trolling. Likely both.

E.Griz - Yes I certainly do live in Washington and Anderson has a Scout Grade of 68 - 2 star and 6'6", not exactly what I would call an outstanding big. I don't think Washington, Washington State and Gonzaga even gave him more than a quick look. Washington gobbles up most of the good Garfield players, Gonzaga and the Cougars have a tough time recruiting in the Seattle area. Hope the kid proves me wrong. You might want to know that Gonzaga's roster this year includes two 6'9", one 6'10", one 6'11", two 7' players and they are not big stiffs. How do you suppose Anderson would do against that group?

Alphonso is a three star recruit on Scout.com as he is on Rivals. Is one of your seven footers Ryan Edwards?

I have no idea how he'd do, since has hasn't yet stepped foot on a college campus. Based on how the GRIZ fared last year against the zags, I'm guessing he'd probably do just fine, though.

And Anderson is a 3-star and was getting plenty of consideration from all 5 of the DI schools in the state.

Say hi to Mark and Marcy for me. Very nice couple. Speak to them relatively often at events in Spokane.
