Dearest UM Athletic Administrators

Thank you for having the courtesy to announce last week that we now have a head basketball coach and that one assistant will be kept.

Now that another 10 days have gone by, would it be too much to ask that you update us "fans" regarding what is probably going to be the head assistant position? I know that I am a mere fan who pays the bills, but I understand that UM has a history of hiring assistants to replace departing head coaches. Thus, I have an interest in that position.

Plus I would like to contemplate what that coach will bring to the mix. You see, I scour the internet to find every detail regarding Griz hoops. I will go to a recruit's home town newspaper to get background information. Thus, it helps when you tell me more about recruits than I have found.

But, in the case of this last assistant, I can't do much except wonder why you won't make the announcement. I know that I can wait until next November when I buy my first program, but I would like to know ahead of time. Too much to ask?

Now, perhaps Travis hasn't yet made a decision. Please announce that - if such is the case.

Or, perhaps Travis has made a decision but for various reasons can't make an announcement. Please announce that - if such is the case.

Our, perhaps UM's goal is to simply "dis" the fans and you will let us know when you have nothing better to do. Please announce that - if such is the case.

Please announce something. Please keep us in the loop to the same extent that you let us know when we have to have our money sent in to buy tickets.

A "fan" - by the way, the word "fan" is a derivative of the word "fanatic." A fan wants to be more than a paying customer. Please treat us accordingly.

Per the Oregonian, Freddie Owens was not selected as the final assistant coach at Oregon State. Kurt Paulson will be on the staff as the Director of Basketball Operations. Tinks has yet to select a Director of Player Personnel, but I doubt that is a position Freddie would be interested in. I wonder if he would be interested in returning to the Griz.

I'm with browningmontana. In addition to his reasons, I'll add that Main Hall and the AD owe us this information to drive up traffic on the basketball board, which will give us something to read other than the NDSU sh!t and ongoing personality conflicts on the other board.

good post, browning. while i am not yet apoplectic over the delay in annoucning the assistant coaches--decuire is still moving, there may be other snags--i wholeheartedly share your belief that fans are the foundation of the whole structure of collegiate and professional athletics. owners, g.m.'s, coaches, administratiors and athletes should always remember, without the fans, they are nothing. and in this regard, i feel our basketball program has missed out on a lot of opportunities to strengthen ties with its fan base.

basically, the off-season, the six months from march to october, has been a dead period for years for grizzly basketball. often, the roster isn't updated until just before the start of the season. (okay, a small detail, but the devil is in the details.) if there is a devoted core of griz fanantics, this website has provided a forum for them, yet i can't remember the last time a coach has come here to answer questions, discuss philosophies, or talk about cheduling issues, uniforms or any of the other myriad of issues that we see so hotly discussed year-round over on the football board.

down here, the san francisco giants have done a remarkable job of building a loyal fan base. last year the team stunk it up, and was totally out of the running by july. and yet they continued to fill the stadium night after night with give-a-ways, promotions and special "nights." the outreach by players has been incredbile. i have never seen such loyalty to an organization, but it is an organization that is constantly reaching out to its fan base.
i'm not suggesting such lavish give-a-ways, but it does seem to me the basketball staff and the athletic administration could spend a bit more time with the most important part of the basketball program.

us.

This line makes me laugh...If an announcement cannot be made for some reason, please make that announcement.

This stuff takes time. I was pleased with how quickly the administration made the call on Travis as head coach. I'm sure he is now working diligently to put together the best coaching team he possibly can. The when, who and why at this point is pretty insignificant. I'm sure we'll know soon enough who that staff is. Relax and enjoy the speculation!

WELL spoken citay  :thumb:

Some possible reasons for the delay in naming assistants:

-Travis' hiring has to be confirmed by the Regents. Might be they do not want to name assistants until after that happens.
-The day after the press conference to introduce Travis, Halsem left for 2 weeks mandatory NCAA compliance training. So he has not been around, and I suspect will not be back to work on campus until Monday.
-Travis has been in California arranging for his move to Montana.

Seems like a crappy thing to do to Fedddy Owens if it is true he was not offered a position at OSU, after he held thing together there between the head coaches. hopefully he has other options, like coming back to Missoula.

I am pretty sure it was reported earlier this week that Travis had filled out his staff, and that it would be announced as soon as they could. I assume that means they have to be approved. At least Travis does, even though it is a rubber stamp approval.

From what I hear, Travis' staff was pretty much set from the time he was hired, so I don't think that unfilled positions are the reason for the delay. Keep in mind it's taken Tinkle quite awhile to announce his full staff at OSU too, so perhaps this is just the normal flow of things. I agree though, in spite of the fact that we already know much of the staff, it would be nice to get official confirmation.
