Dear Mr. O'Day,

Could you please double the salaries of our head football and basketball coaches and their assistants so they don't leave?

Thank you in advance,

AZGrizFan

this...if the Griz win in the tourney, all money should be allocated to keeping our coaches.

after the game when the students were just leaving the court for award presentation, Tinkle looked over at us walking away and said we'll be back next year... i don't think he's going anywhere for a few years

I've driven from Eastern Shores of Maryland in less than 48 hrs by myself, and to Florida straight through with another driver in 41 hrs...now those are long drives....approaching 2500 miles. Plus lived in Alaska for a time, and drove down to Montana numerous times....think thats 2500+ if I recall.

Yep. Drove from upstate NY to Missoula in 2 days by myself. Fairly easy 16 hour days, actually. Today, with my family in tow it would take a week.

They were given a chance to get the Zoo section back some time ago and failed miserably by not showing up.

Way to miss the point. The seats should never have been taken away from students in the first place, and they should not have to prove anything to anybody to get them back. If UM wants to increase student fees to pay for it, fine, but don't try to blame the students for UM's mistake.

I would be more concerned about getting Tinkle signed pretty soon since his contract expires in 3 months.

Agreed. UM should make this a priority.

2 things you should never do - grocery shop when you are hungry, and negotiate a contract when you are emotional (see University of Washington, Bob Bender, 1998). Tinkle has had a 3 year contract extension since November, but he wants to eliminate the clause that if he leaves early he has to pay UM a penalty. So basically the only acceptable contract for Tinkle would do nothing to lock him up or keep him here.

Of course we can't lock him up. But with his success, Tinkle can now rest assured that the programs who want him will gladly buy out any such penalties.

Dear Jim,

Please move those rowdy kids from behind the baskets. It was embarrassing to have them rocking the Weber basket when Lillard was shooting free throws. We could have received a technical foul or something!!!!

I would suggest moving the students to the sideline opposite of the player benches. That way they are away from the baskets. You could just switch the students with the people currently sitting on the sidelines because they never seem to stand up for anything and therefore would not cause any problems by rocking the opponent's basket.

Just a suggestion.

84Griz :) :)

I'm one of those "old" guys that sits sideline, middle, top row, section 109. We are the people that donate money to athletics. We pay for the scholarships. We were assured when we selected those seats that we would have them as long as we paid for them. O'day within the past couple of years has reaffirmed that promise to me in writing. I purchase 2 GSA Golden Grizzly memberships. I have donated money towards a named schorlarship to an athlete to honor my Dad. I have made a 5-year commitment towards the Athletic Improvements Fund, and am considering a charitable gift annuity to athletics. I'M NOT MOVING ANYWHERE, especially to see my seats sit vacant for the majority of the season.
If you would have bothered to look at our section last night, you would have noticed we all stood for most of the game. And we cheered, as my throat can attest today.

566 Miles ?...Lolo 9 mi is real close, Spokane 198 mi is sorta close, Seattle 476 mi is sorta far. Glendive is real far!

The funny thing is the announcer wouldn't of said from nearby Spokane. He probably has no idea where Glendive is. Just figured since it was in MT it had to be "nearby".

I started laughing when he said that...my wife was doing something in the kitchen and asked what was so funny. When I told her she said that exact thing..."must've thought it's in MT so it's 'nearby'".

It was nice to see that section actually standing up and cheering the whole game. Now the million dollar question... can you guys do that consistently next year? ;)

So if UM put the students in your seats, and you were offered excellent seats in an alternate location, you would no longer go to Griz games out of protest? I'm not passing judgment, I'm just asking.

BTW, I did write O'Day to voice my support for keeping Tinkle around no matter the cost. His response was basically that UM didn't have the funds to pony up to counter any better offer Tinkle might get. It stinks that UM will pretty much always be a jumping off point for other coaches. Some day UM is going to be face with having to keep a coach that is truly good for the program. I feel like Tinkle is that very coach. There isn't a better ambassador for the school and the basketball program.

Despite where the students sit, ESPN did a marvelous job of selling the environment on national tv. :thumb: The ESPN crew had it's shit together for this game. For the most part, great commentary, unbelievable camera work of panning in, and picking up on the atmosphere. Best part, they found the best ESPN sign ever. "The Kareem rises to the top, with a Cherry on top." or something like that.

My hats off to the students that pulled that sign off. :thumb:

you obviously missed the announcer's statement that Selvig was from "nearby Glendive, Montana"
haha my thoguhts exactly..i was thinking, damn ogden is just about as nearby as glendive haha

Hmmm, I don't know what that even means in terms of offering Tinks a new contract. Did he give you a hint?

agree strongly....Wayne Tinkle as the face of U of M basketball, probably will never get better than him as far as the whole package.

I find it hard to believe that there is not a way to raise money to keep him around. Add one dollar to the football tickets, hell add five per ticket with the extra money ONLY to be used for coaching salaries. IF the Griz fans knew that the money was being used to keep our good coaches around, would they mind? I sure as hell wouldn't...
