Now it's time for the secondary. Three Sr's graduate here. These are guys that improved their play from 2012 but they are far from irreplaceable. Chief Goodwin did finish tied for 1st in the conference with 12 pass break ups(plus 2 int's) but remember 7 of those and both pics came in one game. He averaged almost one per game but you take away that one game and he averaged .45 a game. Granted that's alot more then the .07 per game that Josh Denard and Nate Harris averaged but Harris also tied the team lead in int's with 3. Bo Tully might have been one of the biggest goats we have had at UM (and I don't mean Greatest Of All Time). He was constantly criticized for his play in '12 and '13 even though he did improve alot. I think alot of people are excited to see A new face take over the SS slot(most likley Whitted). Well lets get started with the breakdown of each player.

Cornerback
Nate Harris Will be returning as a starting CB in '14 for his Jr year. At 5'10" and 180, he is a little on the small side but he makes up for it with good insticts. He has 23 career games and 15 career starts with 64 tackles, 4 int's, and 4 PBU's in his career. With two years in the current system and two more to go, he may end up being a standout corner for us. He should start next year as our shut down corner until someone eles proves they can do a better job.
Joshua Denard will finnaly be a full time starter next year as a Sr. At 5'11" and 185 he's flirted with the starting job since his So year. He started four games in '12 and although he didn't start any in '13, he played a bunch and is the leading returning tackler of all the CB's. It will be intresting to see how well he will challenge Harris for the shut down corner position.
JR Nelson will be a So and at 6'2" and 177 he should be the #1 back up CB. Last year an injury kept him out of two games and he was the #4 corner behind Goodwin, Harris and Denard so he didn't get a whole bunch of time on the feild. That should change this year. With the way some teams in the conference are stepping up their passing attacks, we should see more nickle coverages. JR is a very athletic and fast guy. In high school he was a three time all league selection in California where he played RB and DB. His Sr he recorded 62 tackles and ran for over 1700 yards averaging about 9 yards a carry in only 8 games. With three more years left and most likely starting his Jr and Sr year, we should expect big things from him.
Ryan McKinley redshirted last year and he is another I'm expecting big things from. At 6'1" and 187, he comes in with the size ready to play. He was also a recruit of NoDakSt but chose us instead. His Sr year he totaled only 3 int's and 38 tkl's but I would guess he wasn't thrown towards too many times. He will also be challenging for the starting job in 2016.
Chris Parker is another RS-Fr comin in that should eventually make an impact. A graduate of the same school Hermanson attended (3 time state champs his Sr year). At 6'0" and 185, he played corner in high school but is another guy that could switch to safety but i think with the addition of the new recruits he will stay at his natural position. He was a two time All State selection at DB and was also the track teams MVP. In 2016 he could be starting as a Jr but for now we'll see him on special teams.
Shane Moody was invisible last year. He must have been. He was redshirting last year and nobody knew about him. Well he's listed on the spring roster this year and after watching his highlights, I like him. He's short at 5'8" and 160 lbs which may be exaggerated, but he plays the ball in the air well and he loves to hit.

Strong Safety
Justin Whitted will be givin the SS job with Gamboa moving to LB. At 6'1" and 191, he has great speed after starting his UM career as a corner. He has only played in 16 career games but he has always been a highly thought of player. Hopefully this year he can show more of what he can do on the feild.
Zach Gratton will be returning for his Jr year and will be batteling for the back up SS position. The 6'1" 195 lb'er has played in 11 games and recorded 4 tkls. Last year he only played in two games because of a concusion after playing in nine games his Fr year. From what I understand of the redshirt rules, with approval from the NCAA, he is elegible for a medical redshirt
Jake Dallasera will be a Jr and be a back up at the SS spot. He played in all 13 games last year and registered 11 tackles. A defensive minded player, he did play WR his true Fr year on the squad team. As a Sr at Butte High he was All-State at safety and WR. He was also a standout wrestler where he won two state titles and a 2nd place finish. At 5'11" and 180, I'm sure that wrestling expierience will help also on the feild with some takedowns.
Free Safety
Matt Hermanson will be the leader of the secondary next year. Comin in as a three year starter, he is lookin to put himself towards the top of the career tackles list. If he duplicates last year he will finish at least fourth on the schools all time list. He has already played in 35 career games and started in 23 of them. He is arguably the best run support safety in the conference but has been known to be out of position at times in pass coverage. If he can improve on that without taking away from his run D, he should be 1st team all Big Sky next year and possibly earning a FA contract.
Jamal Anderson will be a Jr next year and should see more playing time then last year. In '13 he got in four games after playing one year at a community college in 2011 where he was named an all-conference selection after recording 35 tackles and 4 int's. At 5'11" and 180, he's got decent size and speed. He was a corner last year and has been switched to safety for spring but I'll bet he plays both come fall. We should hope to see the typical progression from him that we see in most community/junior college transfers. Their first year is always an adjustment but by their second year they usually show alot of improvement. He may not be a stud but our depth will be improved the more he plays.
Mick Delaney is most notably known for being the grandson of Coach Delaney, unfortunately. Being a RS-Fr in '14, he probably won't play much besides special teams, but at 6'0" and 185 he still is deserving of getting a chance to play. He didn't get named a two time all conference for defensive back in football and two time all league pick in track for nothin'.
Trent McKinney is finally making a position change. Just not the one everyone was expecting. For spring ball the Jr will be playing safety. I tried to find any record if him playing deffence in high school and couldn't. He is a very gifted athlete though and that should help him make the adjustment but he's got a lot of learnin' to do.
incoming freshman
Manu Hudson-Rasmussen was a big get from rival E Wash. The 6'0" 180 lb Oregon native had committed to the Eagles and at the last minute changed his mind to commit to us. In high school he was a standout on both sides of the ball but he was a star offensively. He earned 3 letters and was 1st team all state at RB and safety his Sr year. He was also the conference offensive player of the year rushing for 2000 yards and an amazing 38 td's. Defensivly he recorded 13 pass break ups from his safety position. He was also named to the Under Armour Polynesian All American team. I'd really like to see him redshirt this year just cus I'm selfish and I want him to start as many years as possible.
Evan Epperly is a 5'10" 180 lb recruit from Glacier in Kalispell. He went down to the wire choosing between us and state. He's drawn some pretty high praise with comparisons to Tim Hauck and Colt Anderson. A bit premature mabey but I for one am hoping he lives up to em. He was a three year letterman earning 1st team all state at WR and CB his Sr year. He was also tabbed the western conference AA offensive MVP. From his CB position he recorded 10 break ups and 5 int's. At Montana he will play safety and givin' a little room to roam and hopefully utilize those ball hawking abilities. He was also a standout B ball player earning 4 letters and 1st all state honors his Jr year. He finished his prep career as Glaciers all time(granted, not a long history)leader in assists and steals. I don't see a two way player in his future but I do think those abilities will help him on the feild.
Jake Mann is a 6'0" 185 lb walk on athlete from Cali. Known primarily as a running QB in his time in high school, he earned two all league selections at that position while passing for 1100 yards and running for 1500 yards and being responsible for 25 td's in two years. Obviously he ain't gonna line up behind the center for us but his athletic ability should at the very least allow him to be a great role player for us and probably a special teams standout.
