Coming off of a 23-14 victory over Northern Arizona last week, Montana — with a pretty accomplished fill-in quarterback and a defense that looks better on the field than its statistical ranking — visits UC Davis on Saturday. Sporting a 2-2 record (1-0 in Big Sky Conference), the Grizzlies are ranked 13th in the Football Championship Subdivision, and coach Bob Stitt hopes to build off of that Homecoming win over the Lumberjacks. Game time is 1 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.

. . . Tyrone was pretty tough to block. It was just an unbelievable performance on his part. But our defense is solid; they give us a chance to win.” After Holmes, the Montana sends a pack of wild dogs to hunt opposing ball-carriers … Linebackers Kendrick Van Ackeren (46) and Jeremiah Kose (39) have combined for 85 tackles. Van Ackeren, a second-team All-Big Sky selection in 2014, has blocked a kick, recovered two fumbles and defended a couple of passes. Defensive linemen Holmes (38 stops), Jamal Wilson (22) and Nate Bradley (20) have combine for 11 tackles for losses, and Holmes now has eight sacks. A secondary led by junior safety Yamen Sanders has limited Grizzlies’ foes to 179 yards a game through the air.

“We get 11 guys (doing) their job, we can really play great defense,” says Stitt, in his first year at Montana after 14 seasons at Colorado School of Mines. UCD enters the game at 0-4 overall and 0-1 in Big Sky play.
Notes: Last year in Missoula, UCD and the Griz were knotted 14-14 at halftime. Aggie quarterback Ben Scott threw for four touchdowns and UCD was within 35-28 with the ball in the fourth quarter. But that Montana defense buckled down in the stretch. The Aggies were killed by the Two Jordans: RB Jordan Canada rushed for 151 yards and three TDs and QB Jordan Johnson was 18-of-27 for 280 yards and two more scores. Fortunately for UCD, both have graduated. … Fans are asked to wear blue to Saturday’s game, which will feature an Aggie team fitted from helmet to cleat in blue.

At 0-4, Aggie football season full of dichotomies By Bruce Gallaudet

After another tough day at the office last Saturday, the smoke has cleared from a 31-24 UC Davis football loss at North Dakota. The Aggies have started 0-4 — the program’s worst beginning since the 1960 UCD squad lost its first seven games and went 0-8-1. This empty beginning is enough for some longtime Aggie supporters to begin blowing whistles about the job third-year coach Ron Gould and his staff are doing. Since Gould’s arrival from Cal, UCD is 7-20 and 2-13 since a 2013 season-ending 31-7 hammering of Sacramento State. Gould understands the concern and accepts the responsibility. “The buck starts and stops with me,” the former Golden Bear associate head coach told The Enterprise. “When the lights come on, that’s when we have to shine the brightest … and right now, we’re not doing that. “The guys are practicing well. In practice, we’re executing the things you have to execute.”
This is a proud football program. There was a time not too long ago when the NDSU Bison and UCD Aggies were perennial contenders for the D2 championship.

They'll be fired up - we just need to weather the storm. Once the storm subsides, just settle in and impose our will.

Nice metaphor.

For those of us who are old enough to remember the story, an apt association. For some others, perhaps a Harry Potter reference?

Yes, they are the best of the california schools as far as their historical program goes. Don't look for them to be easy to beat at home.

And they beat Poly last year so they can play well in stretches. I see an easy win...at the end...but tough for a while.

Sporting a secondary that has had as many players in the operating room as on the field these past two weeks, UC Davis will try to rise from an 0-4 start to throw its helmet back in the Big Sky Conference football race.
It’s not too late, but the Aggies will have to flip the “on” switch when No. 13 Montana (2-2) comes calling Saturday. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Aggie Stadium.

“It’s the darndest thing,” UCD head coach Ron Gould says of his team’s rash of recent injuries.

As was the case in 2014, when seven defensive starters missed a total of more than 2,400 minutes of playing time (contributing mightily to a 2-9 campaign), the injury bug is back. Out for this season are cornerbacks Shamawn Wright (foot), Isiah Olave (ankle) and safety and team captain Keleen Culberson (ACL). Up-and-coming freshman safety Ryan Parenteau will miss at least the Montana game, according to Gould, and linebackers Ryan Bua and Artice Nelson — both with foot injuries — have required surgery and are on the sidelines for what looks like the rest of the fall. At a time where all hands on deck is crucial, even the offense is reeling. Running backs Justin Williams (groin) and Joshua Kelley (injury undisclosed) won’t go and wide receivers Alex Cannon (ankle) and Brandyn Lee (Achilles) will be missing Saturday, reports the coach.

. . . And being home should be a relief. The students are back, the program is urging fans to wear all blue to match their team’s karma and color scheme and Gould hopes a new period of 12th Man support will begin to emerge: “We really need that 12th Man to come out and support the guys, get behind the team. We feel like we’ve been on the road forever. Now it’s good for us to be back at home in front of our crowd. “It will be great to have them out there to support the team.”

Notes: In traveling to road games at Hawaii (Sept. 19) and North Dakota last Saturday, the Aggies logged almost 8,000 air miles and six days away from home. … Scott’s favorite targets have been Luuga (18 catches for 99 yards) and Chris Martin, whose caught scoring tosses of 75 and 69 yards while taking in 14 passes for 329. Ramon Vargas, last year’s leading receiver, has 14 catches for 136 yards and a score. … It will go a long way to the Aggies’ benefit if the homestanders can account for Montana’s Tyrone Holmes. A candidate for the Buck Buchanan Award as the best defensive lineman, Holmes had 11 tackles and four sacks in last week’s 23-14 win over Northern Arizona. His eight sacks lead the Football Championship Subdivision.

Aggie fans are confident that they are going to beat Montana this weekend..

Really? I saw about one poster on their board who gave them any kind of chance...

Most all of us think the Aggies will lose to Montana except a few hard-core homers. Most of us think we will be 1-10 this year.

Nothing should be taken for granted. Against Liberty I swear we didn't get off the bus. We play like that and any team can beat us on any given Saturday. We need a win bad this weekend and I'm sure the players are aware of it.

Go Griz!!

If anyone truly believes that this game is gonna be a nailbiter, then its gonna be a LOOOOOOOONNNG season...

I beleive it will be a nail biter because for the last few years they all seem to be nailbiters, remote control throwers, stuffed monte punchers and over all bad for my heart
I would love a wire to wire dominating performance.

Said this in my scouting report write up. Davis's game of slow and drawn out drives paired with a pass defense that at least statistically has looked ok is how they stay in games.

If the Griz come out sloppy, pile up the 3 and outs, and don't score touchdowns... it's going to be a close game.

Yep. It's which Griz show up: the NDSU, NAU Griz, or the CalPoly, Liberty Griz. :ugeek:
