How can Paige be the fastest in the BSC when the Griz's Herbert Gamboa won the Cali 100 meters his senior year with a top 10 time in the Nation. I'd put Taylor Walcott and Ellis Henderson up against Paige.

But I seriously doubt he would have been able to do that, and I'm pretty sure there's no way he would have beat out any of our starters. In case you didn't notice, we're pretty damn good, and young on O with the line and skill positions. Our only problems are on D. This isn't a "we didn't want him anyway" post, because we did. He'll have a much better chance of avoiding a red shirt at UM.

All this being said, the decision has nothing to do with Stitt, other than the fact that Stitt made the decision to invest a full schollie in him whereas Delany didn't. He always wanted to play for the griz, so it was a done deal once you went with a full offer as we had done.

I actually thought the Cats skill players looked really average. I wouldn't be excited about your skill positions if Mitch Griebel is your leading receiver.... Herbert is talented but isn't a burner and would probably be better off putting on some weight and playing TE.

I'm sure Ash was hoping for Daum to be able to contribute right away. Because the cat receivers are slow and really not that talented. Without Prukop, that offense is garbage.

LOL. Herbert is actually pretty fast. Griebal is very fast. Justin Paige is likely the fastest player in the conference and one of the fastest players in the country. He injured his ankle against Cal Poly but if you don't thing he is an absolute burner, you don't follow the CATS very closely, which is understandable.

I call BS to Paige being the fastest player in the conference and one of the fastest in the nation. Ash said he "probably" is the fastest player in last year's Cat recruiting class. Now he's one of the one of the fastest in the nation? Did he even run the 100 in high school? I didn't see him in any 100's in a quick Google. Gamboa of UM won the CA 100. Ran 10.51.

I'm not even sure if he was a sprinter in high school. Maybe he's not the fastest player in the conference... but I can tell you he's damn fast. Here is what Colter Nuanez and Kempt had to say about him, and in the first few games it was evident they weren't blowing smoke, he was blazing fast.

Justin Paige, wide receiver — On media day, I asked Shawn Johnson if he was the fastest guy on the team. This is what he said:

“I’ve never said I was the fastest, but people think that and I know this freshman, Justin Paige, is THE fastest,” Johnson said. “We put him on a go route, he runs by the safeties and corners. We need to work on his catching a little bit, but other than that, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with. He's too fast."

Paige doesn't run like a sprinter. His mechanics are sub-par. He's not that fluid of an athlete. Yet he might be the most raw fast guy I've ever seen. He truly has world-class speed. When he's in, the corners know he's running a go and they bail before the ball is snapped and he still beats them over the top. It's insane. He's unbelievably fast. Here's what Kempt said about him:

"Justin Paige gives us an element we don’t have and that’s the ability to push the ball down the field vertically,” Kempt said. “That’s been the one missing piece in our offense. We talked as a staff and came to the conclusion that that is the one missing piece that we needed to recruit or bring in. The ability Justin has to stretch the defense over the top is going to force the safeties to play deeper. They are not going to be able to put nine in the box. If they do, then we have a 1-on-1 matchup with Justin and he’s just going to run by any corner in the league.”

Just curious(I don't know the answer) how many long touchdowns did he have this year beating coverage deep?

Not very many. Two or three that I know of. But as you guys have said about Stitt, the Bobcat offense isn't a "score as fast as you can" offense, but rather an uptempo, 80 ppg, but also control the TOP, type of system. Plus he got hurt in the CP game and that slowed him down a lot. All that being said - if you look back at the threads, all I was doing is shooting down a post that said the Bobcat receivers weren't fast.

I don't know if this is what you're trying to argue or not, but the Griz WR's are hands down better than anything MSU has. Henderson and Jones would walk right into that Bobcat offense and instantly be the stars. I'm glad MSU doesn't have players of this caliber, because them with Prukop would be scary.

Has any coach ever preached a "downtempo," low scoring, "don't control" the TOP game?

Oh no, hope some really don't answer that question. This could get interesting, depending on who answers this.

Well...Back in the 70's (before there was a 3 point line in College football) There was a young coach by the name of Ferd "The hurd" Berffle. He coached at Asiago State Tech from 1971-2014 (retired on Christmas because santa didn't bring him a punter). His philosophy was to let the play clock run down to one second, and then have the QB kneel on the ball and run the next play. He did not huddle between the plays (many coaches were furious about this because their players didn't have a chance to set-up on defense, and they worried they would get hurt). On 4th down he would roll punt. The team averaged only about 15 plays a game, and only managed to score about 1 TD a game (on average over 43 years of play) He prided himself on his Defense and has been quoted in the Chip Kelly book jacket as saying "Offense is for gays"....

Hope that answers your question.

No, that's not what I was arguing. The only thing I was arguing with my response to that post was that we had speed at wide receiver. However, I disgree with the idea that our young receivers aren't talented... but that's OK.

P.S. I'd take a healthy Henderson over any of our current receivers based on everything everyone has shown so far.

It must be nearing ground hog day as so many cat fans are coming out and beginning to get over the thumping they got in Wa Griz! Perhaps some are human but one must not forget how much of a beat down the cats got! But like most lost teams they still brag about the fastest player, the best player, best coach, coldest weather.....on and on they go.

It's OK with me so welcome back to GRIZ NATION AND THE FAMOUS EGRIZ Network of Griz Fan experts. Nice to see some cats coming out of the hole! Cat posters must take a back seat along the back row with big g. You are welcome!

Do Cat fans deserve to have it that bad, by sitting along with Big G? Let them have the back the seat, and kick BigG out. :thumb:

Paige was a true freshman so I would never try and argue he's better than Henderson at this point. But look at his avg yards per catch per TD. It was something like 40 some yards per if memory serves. He is fast. As per the quote from Colter, he doesn't have sprinter mechanics, which would probably explain why you don't find a 100 time for him.

Okay, I can believe he's fast, and the fastest on the team. But let's not get carried away with one of the fastest in the nation. Looks like he ran the 400 in high school, and maybe was on the 400 meter relay. He averaged 31.2 yards per game in 9 games. 11 catches for 333 yards. Had a long of 75. He caught more than 1 pass in 2 games. He must have had a 55 yarder. Excluding the 75 adn 55 yarders, he had 9 catches for 203 yards. That's a nice 22.5 per catch for those. So, he had terrific yards per catch in 11 receptions. So did Jayshawn Gates in 12 catches. How fast is he? So did Manny Kalfel in 2 catches. How fast is he?

Your coaches telling Daum he could make an impact as a freshman is all you need to know about your burners at WR. Daum won't see the field at UM next year.

Gates is another burner. Not quite as fast as Paige but he can jet. He came in @ 150 pounds soaking wet so you he was recruited purely for speed  , and he had great hands. Route running should improve. Kalfell isn't a burner but he's not slow either. He's 6' 3" and over 200 pounds I believe. Not sure if I'd give him the "possession receiver" title or not because that usually means they're slow...

Now he's one of the one of the fastest in the nation? Did he even run the 100 in high school? I didn't see him in any 100's in a quick Google. Gamboa of UM won the CA 100. Ran 10.51.

Gamboa won the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Finals, on May 19th, 2012 (his SR year) with a blazing time of 10.51. This was at Mt Sac (Junior College) in Walnut, CA.

In that race, John Ross, the speedy now starting Univ of Wash (former WR turned CB) finished 4th with a great time of 10.78.

Gamboa, two weeks later on June 2, 2012 at the CIF State Finals, finished 6th with a great time of 10.73. Too bad he didn't run his previous 10.51 because the winner of this CIF State Finals race ran 10.52.

All that being said - if you look at the threads, all I was doing is shooting down a post that said the Bobcat receivers weren't fast.

One of those long touchdowns was on the road in Cali, the safety totally bit on the run fake (at first ignored that it was a pass and came up to run fill) and was caught badly out of position, and Page was left all alone for an easy TD. That's what having a deceptive QB (read option pass QB) can do to a defense. And yes, Page actually beat a couple defenders in other games for long receptions. I will give him credit, he is fast. I can't find times for him, but he can run some. :thumb:

I had to edit this post because I forget to comment on the Bobcat offense. Ash said on the the bobcat sports report that his offense will throw the ball if the opposing defense (pre-snap) brings down a safety into the box (so there's 8). He said msu will run the ball if the defense shows Cover 2 (two high safties), so that there's 7 in the box. Nothing secret in those comments however, that's what most teams will do. :)

Jayshawn Gates, from Palo Alto, his SR year ran 11.16 at the CCS Championship Finals (held at Gilroy High, Gilroy) on May 24, 2014, This time placed in 5th place. The winner ran 10.71.
