Dan O'Connell's response (the guy who didn't vote for ewu)

Dear xxx
How can you assume that this is “the epitome of bitter and east coast bias?”

Why should you be ashamed of my actions?

I truly believe that Delaware was beaten by an egregious administrative error by the officials. Mario Brown was clearly short of the first down in the fourth quarter. If the chains had not been moved, I firmly believe that he would have short of the first down and Delaware would have taken over on downs.

Although Eastern Washington won the game, Delaware dominated the first 40 minutes and Delaware dominated the game statistically. If the ball had been spotted correctly, Delaware would have won.

When the ball was spotted erroneously, it seemed like more than the UD defense could handle. They had been on the field for a long time.

I didn’t mean to disrespect Eastern Washington in any way. They won the trophy and they are the national champions. Their impressive come-from-behind rally was outstanding. The fact that it was accomplished against a terrific defense made it even more impressive.

Polls are opinions and not everyone is going to agree.

Wow.. time to toss this ... tosser off of the voting committee, he's obviously not capable of voting. Polls are opinions, but Delaware was beaten on the field. The call he references was reviewed and confirmed, what more can you say?

To say that Delaware dominated the game statistically is flat out not true. Yes they did win some statistical categories, but not all and in any case games aren't decided by stats but by the score on the board.

Eh, once a homer always a homer. To base your vote off of one questionable spot is silly. There was a lot more to that comeback than one 4th down spot. I watched the spot numerous times and it looked pretty good to me and I really doubt he had a better view than any of us did. It was a judgment call and each team has to live with that.

Boo f*cking hoo, Dan. I knew the excuses would be flying with that call. They were lucky enough to even have the review.

This is the most utterly rediculous bunch of horse hockey I've ever read. To base an entire football game on one play shows the true lack of understanding this meathead has for the game of football. Then to say no disrepect to EWU shows he is barely a man. This response confirms the theory that stats show you everything but the truth. This joker should be unable to ever vote in another poll due to stupidity. What a weeeeeeeeeny :geek:

The Hens lost because they failed to hold a 19 point lead, not for 40 minutes, for 60. There certainly were non calls that benefiited the hens. That's football.

Sounds like something Dub-Fancy wrrote.

Not to mention that despite that 40-minute "domination," UD ONLY managed 19 points. It's amazing we made the championship last season considering the domination we suffered at the hands of SDSU.

Well, if so, he or she might be in some deep trouble, since I read recently that as of Jan. 1, it is a federal crime to impersonate another in situations like this....hmmmm, let's hope so....

Ya, and if the earth was flat there would only be one time zone. Your point?

. . . it seemed like more than the UD defense could handle. They had been on the field for a long time.

Oh my gawd!!! The sorrow and the pity! Isn't that the objective of a football game, to give the opponent more than they can handle? I feel sorry for this guy's kids.

A couple of mistakes this guy made. Number one. Spotting of the ball is a judgement call by the officials and there was no indication that it was an erroneous spot. There were some problems with already moving the chains, but I thought he might have gotten a generous spot. I am sure that there were times that they got less than generous spots during the game.

Football is a momentum game. EWU got it after not having it for the first "40 minutes". That's why the game is 60 minutes genius! Glad they didn't call our game against SDSU after 40 minutes. Better yet, we dominted Villanova the first part of the championship game last year. They should have called the game while we were ahead. Did he vote for us last year?

Finally, why is he defending himself to an email. He has to know it is going straight to a message board and he is going to look even worse from it. This guy has to have a relative in administration. No one gets his job with his intelligence level without the help of nepotism.

All I can say is, WOW! Total Insanity!!! What is Dan's official position with Towson State? :o
"Associate Athletic Media Relations Director" -- whatever the hell that is. Here's what his bio on the Towson web site says:

Dan O'Connell joined the Towson media relations staff in 1979 as the Associate Sports Information Director. He serves as the primary contact for the Tiger football, gymnastics and baseball teams.

He also provides assistance with many other sports, including basketball.

O'Connell got a very early start in athletic media relations work. A 1976 graduate of Loyola College, he served as Loyola's Assistant Sports Information Director during his final two years at Loyola.

A veteran of nearly 35 years in the SID profession, he recently celebrated his 30th anniversary at Towson University.

The winner of the ECAC's Irving T. Marsh Award in 2008, he served as president of ECAC-SIDA in the 2005-06 academic year when the organization held a very successful workshop in Oneonta, N.Y. He was a member of the ECAC-SIDA Executive Board for eight years.

A member of CoSIDA's prestigious Academic All-America Committee since 1987, he was a National Coordinator for five years. In 2008, he joined the Academic All-America Executive Committee in the role of Vice-Chair for Communications. He was honored as the winner of the Lester Jordan Award at the 2008 CoSIDA Workshop in Tampa, Fla.

A native of Fairfield, Connecticut, he graduated from Fairfield Prep in 1971. While he was a high school student, he was the sports editor of the school newspaper and also worked as a part-time sports reporter for The Fairfield Citizen.

During his undergraduate years at Loyola College, he was the sports editor of the school newspaper until being appointed to the position of undergraduate Assistant SID for his junior and senior years. After earning his degree in English from Loyola, he was named as the SID at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

After two years at UMBC, he joined the Towson University staff in the role of Associate SID when Towson elevated its program to NCAA Division I status in 1979.

At Towson, he serves as a member of the University's Hall of Fame selection committee.

He is also a member of the official NFL statistics crew for all of the Baltimore Ravens home games at M&T Bank Stadium.

He is the father of two adult daughters. His oldest daughter, Erin, is a 2007 graduate of the University of Maryland Law School who earned her undergraduate degree from UMBC in 2004. She is currently an attorney with the Social Security Administration in Baltimore. His youngest daughter, Maureen, is a senior at Towson University where she works in the Athletic Media Relations Office as a student assistant.

In case you're wondering, ECAC stands for "Eastern College Athletic Conference" -- which I had never heard of before, but apparently it's pretty big back there.

Perhaps he played some sport, somewhere, at some time ... but there's no evidence for it in his resume. He's been a news dweeb forever, so I'm sure he considers himself far more knowledgeable than any "ordinary" fan could ever be. Still, he gets to vote in the polls -- 'splains a lot, doesn't it? :(

(But be careful what you say ... note the government lawyer connection.)

To be entirely honest, even though he is an idiot, I have to hand it to him for providing reasoning and attempting to back it up. Also, the play was reviewed so tough crap. I think the Raiders beat the Chargers earlier this season and had almost 300 yards less offense. Bottom line is that if you win you're #1 and that's what matters. The reflection of this problem is reflected in the BCS where these jackos get to say I think instead of the teams playing in a playoff to an I know.

It is a pathetic attempt at logic and reason and irrelevent anyway. If you don't want to be subject to chance, make damn sure that it doesn't play a part. Had EWU had a whole series of calls change the game completely around then by all means complain all you want. If it comes down to one single call then live with it -- or publicly whine like an a-hole and look like a loser.
