Dahlberg Attendance?

Saying that Hawaii and Nevada "play with the big boys" because they play in the WAC is a bit of a stretch. Both are one bid conferences and the Big Sky is 8-6 vs the WAC.

The WAC as a conference is rated #12 right now in RPI, just below the WCC (Gonzaga, St. Mary's, BYU...), and the PAC-12, and most of their teams have a respectable strength of schedule.

The Big Sky is #26 (out of 32 teams), just below the Big West... yeah.... the Big Sky is ranked below the Big West... and only 1 team in the Big Sky has a top 200 strength of schedule. Sorry but the Big Sky is pretty bad this year again :(

Sure the top 2 teams of the Big Sky could compete fairly well in the WAC right now, and probably be right up there near the top. Not too sure about the rest though....

BTW, when I called there were quite a few decent single seats available. They had a number of first row seats for the Weber game on the lower level to be had if you are just going to sit on your own. I got two seats together in the lower level. Not the greatest, but not the worst, either.

The main reason for low attendance in my opinion is because the atmosphere is nowhere near what it was before the remodel and before moving the student section. It takes a hell of a lot from the crowd now to get it real loud and rocking in there. Not only was it fun for the students, it was part of the reason for going to a Griz game. The students would help get the crowd into it. They really fucked up with that one. When I went to a game last year(may first since before the remodel) even though it was the Bobcat/Griz game, it felt like something was really different. Like the heart had been torn from Dahlberg Arena. Well at least I have my memories of the 80's when I went there and the student section(and the whole Arena) was awesome. Too bad the powers that be are determined to never have that atmosphere again(and think "Hawaiian Shirt night" is gonna bring it back, give me a fucking break!)

As you can see I edited my comments because while I agree the WAC is a better conf than the Sky, I would in no way classify them as big boys. I have no idea how they're ranked 12th. The projections I've seen have them as a one bid league with Nevada being a 14 or so seed. And they're gone from that conference next year. Other WAC teams like perrianial WAC power Utah St rarely beat the big boys or win in the tournament.

They probably are only a 1 bid league this year, but have had several years where they had 2 teams, and I think a couple where they even had 3. I'd have to go back and check on that though.

I will agree that they haven't had much tournament success recently, and some pretty big let downs. I do think Utah State got screwed last year though. Refs fouled out their best player on ticky tack bullshit :P That was my 5 12 upset dammit... screwed my bracket all up... I think at least one of the refs was a big sky ref...

Anyway, I think we consider them one of the bigger boys anyway because they do have multiple teams in the tournament occasionally, and will occasionally get a decent seed like the 5 seed when the Griz beat them.

It's a conference filled with much more recognizable teams than the Big Sky.

The main point I guess is we don't draw very well even if it's bigger opponents that get scheduled here. Sure we may draw 6900 if Stanford comes to town, but how often does that happen? If it's a team from a much better conference, and a recognizable team (like Nevada, Oregon State, Fresno State, or something) we should at least be able to draw 5000 don't you think? We draw over 20,000 to see the Griz FB team beat the piss out of Western State, but can't draw 5000 to watch the Griz play Nevada, Oregon State, or a top mid major team like Long Beach State?

It's frustrating :P

Football vs Basketball attendance? Consider that 60% of football season tix are held by people out of the Missoula area. They plan ahead for a Saturday afternoon. Nobody (even Missoulians apparently) makes any special effort for a Griz bb game, half of which are played mid week. And for sure, damned few people with any distance to travel will be attending. and, as stated before, fans have never warmed to a sanitized Adams Center with fewer seats and less atmosphere.

Hey now! I am travelling from the Bozeman area for the Weber game! Granted, it's only for the one game, but still!

AND, if you show up early for the NAU game tomorrow you can see the National Anthem performed by the Missoula Mendelsohn Club, one of the oldest continuously active men's choruses in the US. If you like to see the anthem performed in the traditional style, you're guaranteed to be moved.

Yah, that'll get the students there...come early kids, get your awesome full court side...err, I mean, behind the basket seats!

If I remember right, in the early 80s games were on Fridays and Saturdays instead of Thursdays and Saturdays. In the mid to late 80s this changed to allow an extra day for travel on road trips, including the Reno to Flagstaff leg which apparently was legendary for bad weather. If we went back to the Friday-Saturday schedule and moved the Saturday game to 2pm, fans could come from Butte-Helena-Great Falls-the Flathead, stay the night, wives could do a little shopping, and then everybody could go home late Saturday afternoon before the roads re-freeze. Not exactly like football, but close.

Trouble is, coaches and players would understandably freak out about playing that second game so close to the end of the first and it would make the travel on road trips even tighter than it used to be.

I brought my family to this game from out of town just to see a school with a name. Same reason I'm for moving up in Football. I thought it was great! I totally understand why most people don't leave their houses to see the rest of our dumb conference. If I lived in Missoula, I'd go to all the decent non-conf games.

Weber State almost had 9,000 for Texas Arlington..........Not that big of a name.

You should try going to games vs the rest of the conf, some of them get quite entertaining.

If UTA isn't name, then neither is Weber State. Did you not know UTA was ranked up there with Weber and Montana in the Mid Major Poll which most certainly has some "names". :thumb:

Weber State? Who ever heard of Weber State ;)

And yes before the game Weber was 17th and UTA was 18th :thumb:

He said he only brought his family to see a game vs a team with a name, Hawaii, and granted, Hawaii is more known than Texas Arlington and Weber almost got 9,000 for that game. My point is he should be showing up and supporting the Griz NO MATTER WHO THEY PLAY.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they did switch back to the Friday/Saturday games a season or two ago but it only happened for that season. Pretty sure they nixed it because of the demands of getting from one place to the next in time.

The Friday/Saturday schedule was an experiment that has been tried twice by the Big Sky since the 1980s. Both times it was a glaring failure. There were literally games that were cancelled/postponed because you couldn't, for instance, get from Sacramento to Flagstaff from Saturday morning before game time if there was any glitch at all. Yes, the coaches and players all complained, especially when not all teams were required to have the same schedules.

What is the capacity of Dahlberg Arena? What number would constitute a sellout?

Let's do this, whatever the number is!

People in seats is about 7,350. The athletics department includes all the players, cheerleaders, and staff in the count too, so completely sold out would be around 7,500.

Believe me, every cheerleader, usher, security, staff, media, refs, Season tickets (whether they attend or not) and "distrubuted tickets" are counted in anyreported attendance, so it usually means that the actual number of people sitting in the stands is about 1000 less than UM tells you, sometimes up to 2000. I have mde an unoffical count of "seats" & it is nowhere close to 7350.

I am not saying that you are lying, but I have never heard about Big Sky games being cancelled. If this did indeed happen in the 1980's, I don't see how that is relevant to today and Sac State wasn't even in the Conference back then.

Flagstaff has always been difficult to get in and out of namely for NAU's own Brad Snyder. It is the one difficult road-trip teams have to face. The road isn't suppose to be easy.
